About this project
Continuing Pre-orders for RightPSI on our website.
RightPSI has created a tire pressure indicator that screws directly onto your tire valve stem. The color-coded cap shows when your tire is low, correct, or overfilled.
After years of testing we are finally ready to launch our product but we need your help. To launch we need to purchase multi-cavity plastic molding tooling (helpful to produce many units at once), and a laser for plastic welding (providing a strong bond that prevents leaks). This will allow us to produce a high quality product in an economically viable quantity and make it available to the general public.
How RightPSI works:
Our caps make it easy to KNOW YOU'RE LOW. They respond to air pressure in the tire changing color to notify you when you need to fill your tires. Works great with bikes, motorcycles, trailers, Semis, RVs or any other tire with a Schrader valve on it. We are working on a Presta valve version as well. Although we will not be able to offer that as a current option on Kickstarter, we may offer it as a stretch goal.
• Unscrew your tire's valve stem cap and screw RightPSI cap onto stem.
• When installing tighten the hex nut at the bottom of the cap to secure the product and prevent theft.
• Cap will show ORANGE when your tire is low, BLACK when it is correctly filled and YELLOW if overfilled.
• You pump right through our cap so you can use it as a gauge while filling up. If you have overfilled and yellow appears, bleed the cap to black and you are ready to roll.
• Works as a nice compliment to TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) as an indicator of which tire is low and as a convenient way to ensure proper pressure while filling.
• When the cap is indicating it is easily visible from up to 20 feet away, while at the same time not being visually intrusive.
RightPSI lets you know when you should fill your tires reminding you of this simple safety task. Low tire pressure reduces handling and increases braking distance leading to preventable accidents. Motorists ranks having properly filled tires as a safety priority.
Keeping your tires filled correctly improves gas mileage and decreases tire wear. The caps pay for themselves in about 5 months and you keep saving gas after that.
Better for the Environment:
By increasing your car's fuel efficiency and tire life, you help stem pollution and improve the environment. Maintaining proper tire pressure is a simple and effective way to reduce emissions.
Award Winning Product Design:
RightPSI has been in development since 2009. Here is a brief overview of our design process.
This first prototype turned our patent into a workable product. Our friends at Think2Build, a Bay Area design firm started by two IDEO alumnae, helped design this iteration. The 2009 version was lacking a secondary cap and is less streamlined than the production version. This version also had the hex nut on the bottom that can be tightened to prevent theft.
In the second prototype we added a cap and streamlined the over all design.
For the 2012 production prototype we added laser welding of the clear plastic shield. This helps prevent leaks and makes for a long lasting product.
Here is a non-production plastic welding unit. We will be looking to purchase one of these after the conclusion of the Kickstarter.
RightPSI received the Popular Mechanics Editors Choice Award for Outstanding Achievement in New Product Design & Innovation. We are also a MSN (Microsoft Network) Top Pick from the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association) show. SEMA is the largest automotive aftermarket trade show and 5th largest industry trade show in the US (It’s a big deal!).
Kickstarter supporters will have the opportunity to select whatever PSI level is suitable for your car. By changing the internal components we can produce caps with a wide variety of PSI levels. If you are asking “Can you do X PSI for my go-cart/tractor/golf cart/motorcycle/Tesla/dragster?” the answer is yes we can.
When the campaign is over we will contact the supporters to find out which unit meets their specifications. Once in stores, we will initially be offering a standard range of PSIs: 28,30,33,35 and 40.
The QR code on the package will take you to a database where you can enter your car's make, model, and year. The website will tell you which PSI your car requires.
How we are spending your money:
(AKA Production Plan)
Our $20,000 goal will launch RightPSI into production. With your help, RightPSI will purchase multi-cavity tooling and a laser for plastic welding. We are making some improvements that will be incorporated in the new tooling allowing us to streamline the production process. Once the tooling is in place, we will test the changes to insure they meet our high quality expectations. We are a proud made in America product. All of our suppliers are American and RightPSI is assembled in America.
Receipt and set up of tooling - This includes a multi-cavity plastic molding machine and a laser plastic welder
Testing and review - Once the first units roll off the line extensive testing will be done to ensure that they meet our stringent quality specifications.
Shipping - We send the freshly minted RightPSI tire pressure gauges to you!
We will use the Kickstarter page, as well as our website to update sponsors on or progress (receipt of machines, first units off the line, shipping, etc..).
Thank you all so much for supporting us! I know its cliched but we couldn't have launched this product without your support. Getting to our goal in 6 days was a very pleasant surprise. That said, here are two unlocks that are a real possibility:
$30,000 - Colors - Choose colors to more accurately blend in to your car or accessorize your whip with a variety of cool colors! We will be offering red, blue, yellow, pink, matte black, and matte silver. These will be an option for an additional $5. GOAL MET!
$40,000 - Glow - We will offer you with glow in the dark versions of RightPSI! This is a great product to help add visibility while biking at night or to add a unique style to your auto or moto. Similarly, these will be an option for an additional $5. GOAL MET!
$60,000 - Presta Valve Adapter - We are researching the best Presta valve adapter to work with our product and will include it for your bike order. This reward level will be $18. For this you will get 2 RightPSI caps and 2 Presta valve adapters. GOAL MET!
$75,000 - My RightPSI App- The extra $15,000 will help us build a database and app that will have a user friendly interface showing manufacturer recommended pressure for each of your tires. The site would also host an easy kPa or BAR to PSI converter. Offering this resource has been a part of our plans for a while, but the extra money would allow us to build it out now and have it available for consumers when we launch the product.
$110,000 - Presta Valve Adapter - This would be a version of RightPSI that screws into Presta Valves right out of the box! Presta valves are primarily present on bicycles. Motorcycles, trucks and cars all use Schrader valves. The current model is a Schrader valve version. For more information on Presta valves check out Update 13.
Risks and challenges
Purchase, installation and ramping up production using the multi-cavity tools and laser welder will take some time and testing. To aid in this, we have a relationship with one of the nation's top plastics engineers to help manage our manufacturing process.
Delays could happen with any of these steps, however we are confident that we will be able to start shipping your orders in September.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We have had the product on a spin fixture and it did not affect the balance in the slightest. It is quite light, but solid and very well engineered.
Sadly no. Our product is purely mechanical and set specifically to a single PSI level. There is a spring in the valve core that is tuned specifically to one PSI. This is how it is easy for us to produce a variety of different PSI levels. This spring cannot be replaced once the housing is sealed, so if you require a different level for a new car you will need a new set of indicators.
Here's the good news, we can make any PSI level that you require, and our product is very affordable. It is a fraction of the price of any electronic TPMS (tire pressure management system). Most dealerships charge $20 just to reset those systems when you have your tires rotated (something that most manufacturers recommend you do once or twice a year), and if a sensor is damaged they cost $50 per wheel to replace. RightPSI compares favorably at $25 for your whole car.
I need X number of caps, but Kickstarter only allows me to choose one support level. Will you be adding more levels to accommodate different needs?
Yes. As these come up we will do our best to add more levels to accommodate as many situations as possible. Just shoot us a message or email.
