About this project
Rigamo is a new mixed multi-media endeavor about a young superhero, Kera Moore. Kera is a young girl who accidentally stumbles upon a secret ability: her tears bring people back to life. However, there is one caveat: when she brings someone back to life, she ages by multiple years.
We start off the story with 6-year-old Kera who discovers that her goldfish has died. This is her first experience with death, and as she cries her tears fall into the fishbowl.
The next day the fish is revived, but Kera wakes up to find herself 9 years old. Now that she's discovered her power, Kera must make a choice: should she use her power for the greater good even though there's a high probability that she will lose an unknown number of years of her own life?
Why This Project?
The Rigamo universe seamlessly spans both a short film called Rigamo and a comic book series based on Kera, the main character. The short film is to be written and directed by Che Grayson with special animation and visual effects done by Sharon De La Cruz. The art in the comic book is to be done by Sharon with a story written by Che. Our cumulative vision ensures that Rigamo will be an interesting, multifaceted project focused on promoting positive characters from under-represented communities whose stories deal with current social issues.
Through Rigamo, we want to promote positive images of young black girls in the visual mediums of both film and print media. We also wanted to dive into the more personal themes of mourning and healing within those Black and Latino communities.
We are experimenting with a storytelling experience in which we follow Kera Moore through the discovery of her newfound power which begins in a 6 minute film that ends on a cliffhanger and continues through volume 1 of the comic book. We hope you're down to join us for the ride!
We already have a full third of our budget in the form of a grant from NYU's Graduate Student Organization and are attempting to raise the rest with this Kickstarter campaign which will cover:
- Costumes and production design to help bring the vision to life
- Transportation for cast and crew
- Food for cast and crew
- Price of film stock and film development
- Pay for film festival submission fees so we can get this story to a greater audience.
We really appreciate the time you've taken to read about our project and we hope that you are as excited as we are to work towards paving the way for a new black female superhero.
Rigamo is about pushing the boundaries of how we experience stories. Every little bit you can give us not only goes directly towards the film and comic, but will be the catalyst for a project that can expand and take a life of it's own. We'd love for you to be a part of our journey. If you can't donate, share with others any support at all will get us one step closer!
Lots of Love,
Che and Sharon
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge that the Rigamo project faces is the time constraint. Both the film and the comic must be presented at NYU by April 25th.
However, with your help in addition to the help of our fellow NYU collaborators we will be able to see this project through to fruition!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
