An update about the VOD

Hey folks,

We have a fairly major update for you about the VOD version of the Starship Troopers live show. Unfortunately, we’ve been unable to secure the rights from Sony to provide a digital version of the live show. The rights are completely different for theatrical and digital release, and even though we were able to work out an agreement with the theatrical division, it’s just not possible for a digital version.

Since we won’t be able to provide you with a download of the show, we’ve prepared you a package that we hope is an even greater value:

1. First (free) access to the VOD of our never-before-released live show from last year, Manos: The Hands of Fate

2. An MP3 version (also free) of our Starship Troopers riff, which we’ll record after the live show

3. A $5 gift certificate to RiffTrax.com

We’ll be delivering these to you within the same November time frame, possibly even earlier, and will of course keep you updated to our progress right here. Thanks again for your support, we hope to see you at Starship Troopers next week!

-Mike, Kevin, and Bill

The show was the best yet!! Any chance that the Starship Troopers MP3 will be made available (for purchase) to those who didn't pledge at this level?
      Thanks again, guys!

@Jimmybee: Man, you are just never gonna let go of that whole Hubble thing are you? Mike apologized, what more do you want?!

    3. Creator Jimmybee on August 12, 2013

      well, I'm "stumped." :)

    4. Creator Nicholas Anderson on August 12, 2013

What about getting Birdedemic Live Show instead?

    5. Creator Tarl Vetter on August 12, 2013

I had a question and it may have already been asked, but could you go ahead and make a VOD for this show, but not put any of the movie itself on there? Then if people were really interested they could play the commentary and any other special stuff on their laptop/tablet and play the actual movie on the TV and get the best of both worlds.

    6. Creator Lisa Kruse on August 12, 2013

I'm actually perfectly OK with getting the Manos Live as a substitute. I have been waiting for it's release and am thrilled I'll be getting it first. Also, We are getting an MP3 of the live show, correct? So all you have to do is play your own Troopers dvd and listen to the MP3, exactly as we have done with the Twilight that IS available. I'm more psyched to get my signed poster so I can frame it and hang it on the wall next to my Mystery Science and Cinematic Titanic signed posters, Yay! Can't wait for access to new shorts too!

    7. Creator Jason LaGarde on August 12, 2013

I totally support this project and I'm happy it's happening. THAT SAID, it has been a project of disappointment after disappointment. We were told going in that we might not get Twilight. So we can only be so let down about that, but we're human beings, and we wanted our cake and we're getting pie instead. But we WANTED cake.. I mean.. *chew*.. it's good pie.. *swallow*.. but still.. *chomp*...wanted cake.

And I for one, appreciated the honesty that the Twilight option might not be met. We weren't given any clarity that the digital rights could also be an issue. And those of us not "in the business" didn't know that was a potential hiccup. We're Kickstarter pledgers, not venture capitalists. We depend on the people running the Kickstarter being up front on the potential behind the scenes issues so we can know what we're getting into & not feeling like we've been suckered into a 'bait & switch'.

Am I going to see the live show? Absolutely. Am I happy it's happening? You bet. But am I disappointed that this has been so poorly managed? Damn straight. And I have a right to be & so does everyone else.

All we can do at this point is hope that in the future Rifftrax does a better job researching their options so when we kickstart their next project (because you know we will) we'll all come away with a less bitter taste in our mouths.

    8. Creator Donald Milliken on August 10, 2013

RiffTrax were up front from the beginning that they might not be able to secure the rights to the live show for VOD. I'm as disappointed as anyone and absolutely anyone who supported this has the right to express their disappointment. That said, anyone that seriously didn't understand the risk inherent in backing a Kickstarter project shouldn't be backing Kickstarter projects. I'm just as bummed as you are, whiny internet dudes. Won't see see me crying for a refund though. The money's all been/being spent securing the rights for the live show and fulfilling rewards. I suppose the RiffTrax guys should dip into their own pockets to silence a whiny minority? No sympathy on that front, I'm afraid.

    9. Creator Jeffrey Christian on August 9, 2013

It does suck that we will not get the VOD but they did they best they could. I think what they offered us in compensation is more than enough and a great thing. I donated too and I can't go to the live show either due to me having to be at work. We still get an MP3 of it. Even though it is not the live show it will be just as funny.

    10. Creator Mr Jonathan Peter Lambert on August 9, 2013

This is a bit of a shame. Seeing as I am backing it from outside of the US/Canada, the VOD is the only way I can get to see the live shows. But still the consolations are not bad.

    11. Creator KB on August 9, 2013

Just throwing this out there. I work in the entertainment business doing things like distributing films on DVD/VOD/etc. I can tell you from experience often other companies have "exclusivity" to certain types of distribution of films that may have prevented RiffTrax from securing the VOD rights.

It's not a matter of not wanting to, it's probably legalese wherein whomever owns the right to distribute Starship Troopers on VOD probably has some exclusivity deal that they were unable or unwilling to waive. Meanwhile, "Theatrical" release of movies is not popular as usually it's simply not profitable beyond a few years. It's a totally separate right that was probably either a) free to be sold however or b) able to be sold because whomever had the "Theatrical" right to broadcast the movie was willing to waive their rights.

I firmly believe RiffTrax would have secured the rights if they could. My guess is they, legally, could not. It's something that unfortunately happens a lot, but it's also reality in the movie/television business. Sometimes certain rights just are not legally available.

    12. Creator yoda-sama on August 9, 2013

I don't believe the point of Kickstarter is just to allow con artists, but their point regardless is not that these projects are guarantees, risk is implicit. I give to projects like Rifftrax and the Veronica Mars movie, etc. , because I believe in the people behind it, and want to give them the chance to succeed. But no amount of trust in them wanting to do the right thing could make me believe wholeheartedly (read: without a shred of common sense) that some small group could convince a giant corporate movie machine to allow for the distribution of non-DRM encumbered VOD versions of their product, at least not on their very first dealings with them. But I could agree that if someone depended on this as the way they expected to be able to view the feature in question, then perhaps an extra free Rifftrax MP3 download or something might be in order. At the same time, those same people weren't planning to pay the $12 something dollars extra per person to watch it in the theater either, so they're not out much (and will be able to at least sync the jokes later, if they wish). In the end, I think the worst reaction should be disappointment (yes, this much a person is entitled to) rather than shock or anger, it was always a pie in the sky dream. It doesn't hurt to hope, but it does hurt to hold it against someone when something falls through beyond their control. Also an important note, be mad at Sony more than Rifftrax, if you have to be mad at anyone, they're the ones who need to see the demand and rage to be convinced to change their policies.

    13. Creator Steve Turczyn on August 9, 2013

I bought every MST3K boxset and single Rhino ever released, even VHS cassettes in the early days. I bought every MST3K boxset Shout! has ever released. I bought all four Film Crew discs. I bought every Legend Film DVD release that had Mike doing a commentary. I bought every full-length VOD Rifftrax has released, I bought every feature MP3 that Rifftrax has released. I bought Mike's and Kevin's books. I even sat through a viewing of Eddie Murphy's "Meet Dave", for heaven's sake.

So I've been a pretty loyal fan, and I think if I want to express some disappointment, I'm entitled.

    14. Creator Trevor Vogel on August 9, 2013

I too am a bit disappointed. But, anyone who's angry at this turn of events "should really just relax". It's a kickstarter project, and although they are not able to produce what the promised, they are doing their best to offer similar rewards for the contribution levels.

On an unrelated Note: I wish all the live shows were available as DVDs and not just VoD. I rarely buy physical media anymore, but, in the case of the Rifftrax Live shows, I would love to have the DVDs to add to my trophy case of movies under my TV.

    15. Creator Jimmybee on August 9, 2013

@Jose De La Mora Here's my understanding: If you qualified for a VOD of Starship Troopers, you get a free VOD of Manos: The Hands of Fate. You can download it and keep it. I own about 300 Rifftrax VOD's, and downloaded ALL of them. Rifftrax gives you the choice of streaming or downloading...whichever is more convenient for you. That will be the case with Manos, as well. Some people have said we can't get an mp3 of the live show, because the movie people, Sony, won't allow it, just as they won't allow a VOD of it.

    16. Creator James Rye on August 9, 2013

      @yoda-sama:

Yeah, well, I'm going to have to take some exception at being told to shut up or that we don't have the right to an opinion on this turn of events.
Let me see if I have this straight. You believe the point of Kickstarter is to allow any con artist to set up a project that may or may not happen, and that rubes who invest in said project should be happy with any scraps that get thrown their way. And believing this, you invested money.
Are you sure that we're the one's with less than half a brain?
To clarify, I'm not at all angry with Rifftrax over what has happened, being quite happy with the alternative package. But I do think they should offer a partial refund to anyone who can't make the live show since there were no real disclaimers on any of the reward packages other than the movie title.

    17. Creator Jason Gott on August 8, 2013

I am not too bothered by this, but I am bothered by the 'shut up, you don't deserve rewards for backing' nonsense. No one owes them anything, and I highly doubt anyone would have simply given money for nothing in return. People are not entitled, they simply expect something in exchange for their money.

    18. Creator Jose De La Mora on August 8, 2013

Also, is VOD like a free rent, were it's streamed, or do we get to download it and keep it?

    19. Creator Jose De La Mora on August 8, 2013

Any reason why we can't get the MP3 of the live show?

    20. Creator Michael Askew on August 8, 2013

Thanks for all your work on this guys. Consolation prize #2 is especially helpful.

    21. Creator Trisha Lynn of Saucy Goose Press LLC on August 8, 2013

Welp, it's a good thing that I decided to suck it up and buy tickets then. It's also a shame that Sony couldn't even let you release the audio from the live riffing either. I have to wonder just how much they value that IP where they won't even grant the license to do *that*.

Still, here's hoping that the next time you try one of these projects, you have your attorneys work this sort of thing out ahead of time and get a dollar amount that we'd be able to fund.

    22. Creator Jim Barg on August 8, 2013

@Stephanie McNamara: No, Sony shut them down. Even recording the show's audio and releasing that as an MP3 was denied (read that on the FB forum). Maybe in the future, after Rifftrrax has more of a track record with the studios, they can dig out the show for release. (And as others have said, this clearly would have happened with Twilight, too.)

It's disappointing, but I don't feel like taking it out on the guys. They tried, and it didn't work. It stinks for those who aren't going to be able to go next week, but studios can be notoriously hard-headed about these things.

    23. Creator yoda-sama on August 8, 2013

Christopher, since they made the point of saying they'll record the riff _after_ the live event, I'd say the material should be pretty close to what they perform live (though not a recording of the show itself, which would present many problems), rather than getting awkwardly different takes on jokes like were found on downloadable shorts that were also riffed live (great example being More Dangerous Than Dynamite).

    24. Creator Christopher D Stephens on August 8, 2013

I helped them back this and I have bought my ticket already and extra bonuses sound good to me. At least we will get a live Manos vod I have been waiting forever for that to come out. I am looking forward to the Mr b natural short also. I wonder if the troopers MP3 will be the live or standard version?

    25. Creator yoda-sama on August 8, 2013

Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and pipe up after seeing some of these whiny comments. The Rifftrax guys were very clear upfront about the pitfalls of dealing with movie studios like this (though it should have already been obvious to anyone with half a brain). They basically guaranteed you NOTHING specific on the parts that were outside their control, they really did the only thing they could do, promise you a reward level and stating what they hoped they could deliver. They are making good on that promise and are in fact giving us more than they have to. Truly much more, since these funding projects have no guarantee whatsoever and even in the best of cases it is still a gamble anything comes of it. You're betting every time you fund a project that the project will ever come to fruition, just be glad when a project doesn't take your money and run. Be more glad that the Rifftrax guys are trying hard to give us more overall than they promised, and likely giving us a better show in the long run than a rehash of Twilight probably would have been (if anyone is whining that fell through, as well). Also, crossing my fingers that they get NPH to participate...

Thanks Rifftrax crew for giving us so much to make up for the parts that fell through. I never thought a free VOD would be possible with a big studio title, but giving us the next best thing by recording a proper Rifftrax MP3 with the same material is great, and the Manos VOD and the bribe are pure gravy on top and totally make up for whatever void was left in the reward tier by not convincing a movie studio to allow the impossible.

    26. Creator MageAkyla on August 8, 2013

I'm personally thrilled by this. When the VOD option looked bleak I was just hoping for some credit on Rifftrax. Now we get that and much more. :)

    27. Creator David Mello on August 8, 2013

Sarah Marquart has hit it on the head. We have to remember this is the first time Mike and the Rifftrax crew wanted to riff on a real movie rather than the "Z-minus" movies that are the usual targets. They found it it's much tougher than recording a riff on "The Avengers" while no one is looking. If we're lucky, it will lead to bigger things for Rifftrax Live...like "Waterworld".

    28. Creator Jimmybee on August 8, 2013

Sure, the guys have made mistakes: Bobo burned down Rome while stealing a *wheel* of cheese. Mike destroyed the Hubble, and several planets. Brain Guy? Well, possibly the biggest mistake of all: Pearl's sidekick. But, that's why we LOVE these guys! Over 20 years of solid laughter, and never asked for help, until now. We gave them help, they did their best. I understand the disappointment for some, but please recognize that these guys are trying very hard to make it right. They succeeded, in my opinion. I hope they are stress-free in this last week before the show. I will help kick-start ANY project they do. I OWE themj...for over 20 years of laughter!

    29. Creator Michael Mason on August 8, 2013

Free VOD of the (brilliant) Manos show? An mp3 version of the Starship Troopers show? $5 bucks for more Rifftrax? Yeah, I'd say you guys are doing an awesome job in satisfying the backers for some things that are clearly out of your control.

It sounds like some people on here don't understand the concept of Kickstarter and also don't understand how bitchy and hard to deal with the movie studios can be...

    30. Creator Sarah Marquart on August 8, 2013

I am disappointed by some of the comments here. These are some of the people who brought you MST3K. Please show some respect. This is a site to fund projects. It shouldn't be about the gift you receive, it should be about funding something you truly believe in. I would have given even more $ if I could have—even if there wasn't a gift for my donation. I’m sorry some of you can’t make it to the show, but remember you've been privileged with years of entertainment from these guys. That said, Manos was a hilarious live show and I am more than happy with my unnecessary, but much appreciated thank you gift. I will continue to back any project these riffers need funded.

    31. Creator Stephanie McNamara on August 8, 2013

Will the live show be available on DVD, just not VOD?

    32. Creator Eric Schneider on August 8, 2013

Well, we knew from the beginning that the rights for both weren't exclusive. I'm unfortunately gone to Gencon, so I'm gonna have to miss the show period. However, this is a better deal and once again, I'm pleased to be serviced by one of the more honest customer services around. You guys treat your fans well!

    33. Creator Sean Aaron on August 8, 2013

Well that's a bit disappointing, but I do have the Starship Troopers DVD, so hopefully there will be some consideration for us PAL-land supporters so we can properly sync the riff?

The other perks are nice too - I still don't have all the shorts!

    34. Creator Arild Jacobsen on August 8, 2013

Aww, that's a shame... I love the live shows, but living in Norway makes it kinda inconvenient to attend in person. No grudge held, studios are tight-fisted with their rights, we understand. Hope to see more live shows in future!

    35. Creator Pete Dillon-Trenchard on August 8, 2013

It'll be great to see Manos, and I understand the difficulties, but I'm in the UK; there's no possible way I can see the ST live show (Which was meant to be Twilight in the first place). You really needed to let people know BEFORE the funding deadline that VOD wasn't necessarily going to be an option, given that so many of your reward tiers hinged on it. I love the site and will continue to buy your videos, but if you decide to go down the crowdfunding route ever again you can count me out. Sorry.

    36. Creator James Rye on August 8, 2013

Oh, and note to Sony: I will NOT buy this god-awful butchering of a classic novel, even if you do try to pass it as satire.

    37. Creator James Rye on August 8, 2013

I'm glad to see it clarified that the Manos VOD will be free, but I have to add my voice with those who are disappointed. The live shows are invariably just a bit better than the studio riffs And while I do plan to be at the theater next week, I can see where those who paid to see their name/picture in the credits won't be able to if they are unable to attend. I'll know to be more careful with Kickstarter in the future.

    38. Creator Jeffrey Christian on August 8, 2013

Sad as it is. I donated because of the Mr B short. I am disappointed we can't see it in the theaters but I hope we get it earlier than November now.

    39. Creator Steve Turczyn on August 8, 2013

Oh, and I get "my name on a page at the rifftrax.com webiste". Pshaw. The FBI's most wanted page has already had me on line for years.

    40. Creator Jeffrey Christian on August 8, 2013

So do we get the shorts in November or will we be getting them sooner? I hope sooner now that we don't have to deal with the Fathom rights delays? I was looking forward to seeing Mr. B riffed in the theater.

    41. Creator Steve Turczyn on August 8, 2013

"I think it's great that you continue to give us more bang for our buck. You were very up front that the digital release was never a definite and depended on getting the digital rights. " If you mean by "very up front" that we were told in update #6 well after our money was gone, then yes, they were "very up front" -- I'm not saying MK&B tried to deceive us, I think they were probably caught out as well... but I'm still disappointed. As for the replacement reward being "even greater value"... a full length Manos-type VOD costs 9.99, a current feature MP3 costs 3.99, add a 5.00 gift certificate and that's 18.98 value I get for my 20.00. Had I known then what I know now...

    42. Creator glenn cummings on August 8, 2013

this blows. just got deployed to kuwait and the vod was gonna be the only way i could see this show at all. will the mp3 at least be riffplayer compatible? having to fiddle with the disk and mp3 constantly tends to take the fun out of these.

    43. Creator Steve Westphal on August 8, 2013

You did prepare us for this possibility which I completely respect and understand. Speaking for myself, I am somewhat disappointed in not getting the Starship Troopers VOD, but I haven't missed a Live event yet and I'll still get to see it. I have also seen the Manos event twice and am thrilled to add that as well as the Starship Troopers MP3 riff to my Rifftrax collection. All is well with the world.

    44. Creator Andrew Horn on August 8, 2013

"...almost more certainly..."? I'm so tired...

    45. Creator Andrew Horn on August 8, 2013

Obviously, it's disappointing to not get the STARSHIP TROOPERS video, although i half-suspected that would be true (and, for those wondering, would almost more certainly have been true if TWILIGHT had been available). It's even more disappointing since I won't be able to attend the live show, since I'm that most rare of creatures, a working actor. Of course, I'm doing LES MISERABLES at a dinner theater- but it's a good dinner theater! Really! And a good production! And it's really long! And I have to sing all the time! And then sling coffee at the intermission! But, hey, it's work, right? And I..I...*sobs*

Sorry. ANYWAYS- I do thank you for the replacement perks- they are an excellent value, indeed. And you say I should be getting them in November? Oh, good- about the time my run will be over. In 3 months. 3 more months. 3 MONTHS MORE! *sobs*

    46. Creator Matthew West on August 8, 2013

Thank you for trying guys. Thank you for the opportunity to help back you guys do something no one has really ever done before! I can't wait to see you guys live at the Belcourt.

I'm not very happy about never getting to see the Starship Troopers live show. Getting a VOD of it was the one of the biggest reasons I contributed.

I hope someone in the audience can make a halfway decent bootleg and put it up on a torrent.

    49. Creator Adam R Herrera on August 7, 2013

The Manos show was amazing, liked it more than the original. Very excited.

    50. Creator David Scudder on August 7, 2013

Sounds great!I knew a video of the show was a loooong shot, and as I expected, you guys delivered more than equal value!Frankly I've been desperately hoping for the Manos show since I saw it in the theater.I'm happier than Togo with a fresh pile of dirt to sleep on!
