Help the RiffTrax/MST3K guys get TWILIGHT to riff for their next nationwide simulcast live show!
To say that this has surpassed our expectations would be putting it mildly. Read our latest update!
At RiffTrax, we've been pretty successful at doing comedic commentaries for movies of all shapes and sizes for many years now. The absolute top best seller of all our commentaries is the wonderfully sparkly vampire-and-werewolf romance known as... the TWILIGHT saga.
We want to do our Mystery Science Theater 3000-style funny commentary for TWILIGHT, broadcast LIVE over hundreds of movie screens to a massive audience in a one-night event in August 2013. This Kickstarter is to help obtain the rights to TWILIGHT for that event!
WHO WE ARE
The guys at RIFFTRAX have been providing hilarious movie commentary for years. First as writers and stars of the cult TV comedy show MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 -- and then online since 2006, as RIFFTRAX -- Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett have taken on movies bad and not-so-bad, with one and only one mission: to make them funny. RiffTrax has written and performed comic riffs for over 300 titles that range from huge Hollywood blockbusters, to obscure B-movies and short educational films.
Celebrity guests on various RiffTrax offerings have included Neil Patrick Harris, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Joel McHale, Jonathan Coulton, Andy Richter, Bob Odenkirk, Kristen Schaal, John Hodgman, Mythbuster Adam Savage, Chris Hardwick, Paul F. Tompkins, Maria Bamford, David Cross, NPR's Peter Sagal and loads more.

WHY WE'RE ON KICKSTARTER
In 2009 RiffTrax did an experiment: a live show in Nashville, riffing the Ed Wood classic PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, simulcast to nearly 500 movie theaters around the U.S.A.
It was a raging success, and since then RiffTrax has done five more live simulcast shows. The number of movie theaters has grown, and demand keeps increasing.
We've done some amazing movies and shorts: besides PLAN 9 and the completely re-riffed version of the MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 classic MANOS, we've done the new classic D-movie BIRDEMIC; the 1960s version of JACK THE GIANT KILLER; Vincent Price's cheesy HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, and a whole slew of bizarre short films.
And this brings us to the reason we're on Kickstarter. We've always wanted to get a more recent Hollywood movie for our next RiffTrax Live show. And our first choice is TWILIGHT!
We have already written and performed a great riff for TWILIGHT and it's our best seller, but the only way you can currently watch it is by syncing our MP3 of the riff with the DVD of TWILIGHT. If we want to perform the RiffTrax LIVE for you in theaters nationwide this August, we need the rights for the movie itself.
So we would like to raise the money to approach Summit Entertainment / Lionsgate and license TWILIGHT for our simulcast August LIVE show.
WHAT IF WE CAN'T GET "TWILIGHT?"
We guarantee that we will take the total proceeds from this Kickstarter and bring them to the headquarters of Summit Entertainment / Lionsgate and work to cut a deal for TWILIGHT. IF the power of the Volturi proves too great and they will not make a deal with us for TWILIGHT, then we will find something equally as awesome from the many other fun riffable movies out there, possibly even something from our RiffTrax Worst Movies of All Time list, and keep trying to license rights until we get one we and you will love.
We really hope to get TWILIGHT. But whatever movie we do, our first priority is to make sure that it will make for a very, very fun night. The more money we raise, the bigger our chances of getting TWILIGHT, and failing that, the more freedom we'll have to get a really cool title.
WHAT DO YOU GET OUT OF THIS DEAL?
Many, many things! We are creating cool stuff exclusively for our backers in return for helping us get TWILIGHT. It's important to us that we give you a good taste of RiffTrax for funding this project.
We cordially invite you to take a close look at the rewards listed on this page; they include a digital download of this very same August 2013 simulcast live show (hopefully TWILIGHT, but whatever the title winds up being). Plus all sorts of new RiffTrax offerings, at very low-priced reward levels:
-- A completely re-riffed version of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 classic MR. B. NATURAL
-- A new short featuring the hapless NORMAN, as seen in our MANOS and BIRDEMIC live shows.
-- The oldest movie ever riffed! RiffTrax will take on the 1902 classic, Georges Méliès' A VOYAGE TO THE MOON.
-- Or you can get all of the above!
There are lots of other cool rewards available, at all levels of support. Please take a look and see which ones might float your boat.
WHAT IF WE GET EXTRA MONEY, PAST OUR GOAL?
The more money we have, the greater the chance that we can make a deal to get TWILIGHT for our August 2013 live show or another really great Hollywood title. Past that, we will put it into greater production values for our August show, and/or go after an awesome celebrity guest or two.
We have the greatest fans in the world, and we know how lucky we are. Thank you for your support over these many years. We can't wait to make you laugh more in 2013.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We are taking an educated guess as to how much it would cost to have a shot at licensing TWILIGHT or another non-obscure Hollywood movie for our next RiffTrax Live simulcast in August. One risk is that we'll find studios more reluctant than we imagined to let us use one of their titles -- even if we can pay them what they'd normally quote -- because we turn their product into comedy in a way that they didn't intend.
Admittedly we're entering unknown territory for us. So on the chance that we are not able to secure TWILIGHT or another title from our Worst Movies Ever list, we're determined to make it a great show anyway, putting the money into getting cool guests and great new production values.
The other challenge to this Kickstarter is that we are unable to do the most obvious thing: pre-sell actual movie theater tickets to the August 2013 live show. The reason for this is that we can't control which theaters will pick it up, and the logistics of pre-selling tickets to hundreds of various theater chains is pretty near impossible.
But we are providing as a reward a download of the August Live Show as well as working overtime to write and produce some great new RiffTrax offerings to our backers among the rewards.
In the end, all we want to do is make for a great evening, going beyond what we've been able to do before. Thanks for considering this wacky project!
As with previous live shows, if it comes to pass that we obtain the rights to Twilight, the commentary will be re-tooled, updated and polished to satisfy even the most loyal fans, who can recite every "Line?!" joke verbatim. Not to mention the bonus content, such as the Oldest RiffTrax Short Ever, and all the other Kickstarter live show exclusives. Our goal is to make the show enjoyable for fans both new and old!
Since we don't have a date or even a movie locked down yet, Canadian screenings are still up in the air. We'll do what we can to get the broadcast there as well, but we can't promise anything yet. Stay tuned!
Sign up for our mailing list and we'll let you know the moment tickets go on sale for our simulcast live show at hundreds of theaters all across the USA. We will also let you know when tickets go on sale to see the show in person at the Belcourt Theater in Nashville -- but please note that tickets for Nashville always sell out very fast, so you’ll want to get them as soon as they’re available. Consider signing up for the Belcourt Theater's mailing list too, and you'll be notified the moment tickets go on sale!
You've already exceeded your goal! What about [guest riffers/additional movies/bears on unicycles/etc.]?
By contributing, you can receive a download of the show, the EXCLUSIVE shorts, and much more bonus content available ONLY to Kickstarter backers - check the various pledge levels for details. Additionally, as stated in our Kickstarter pitch, we're taking an educated guess on the cost to obtain the rights to Twilight. We do know that the more money we can bring to Summit Entertainment/Lionsgate, the better our chances will be! Extra funds will go towards nabbing a great guest or two, and anything beyond that will be used to make the production itself the best we possibly can.
After our fundraiser has ended, we'll be sending a survey to all of our backers requesting more information, such as what name they'd like in their thank-you reward, T-shirt sizes (where applicable), etc. You'll have the opportunity to provide us a different name here.
You can also change your displayed name right in your Kickstarter profile. We'll use that name by default.
