Last year we faked a marathon with over 1000 people from 24 countries. This year, we're faking the greatest adventure race of all time. Read more
This project was successfully funded on March 1, 2014.
About this project
Last year, on February 2nd, we got together with over 1000 of our friends from 24 different countries around the world, and we put on the first ever worldwide fake marathon.
We were featured in the New York Observer, WIRED Magazine’s Geek Dad blog, and the print edition of Runner’s World Magazine.
It was amazing, and ridiculous, and unforgettable. Which is why we’re doing it again on May 10th, 2014.
Except, this time we’re stepping up our game.
This year, Run Free is going to be more than a marathon. It’s going to be the most ridiculous adventure race the world has ever seen.
But a project like this only works if enough people do it. And the MORE people that participate, the more awesome the race is for everyone.
Last year during Run Free, we had over 1000 people participate. It was incredible. And the entire day consisted of people taking pictures, interacting with other “runners” online, and being inspired by those people to take even better pictures of their own.
From the simple idea of a fake marathon came bacon aid stations, superhero costumes, and all sorts of other hilarious things we never dreamed people would think of.
Our little fake 26.2 mile race ended up going across the Golden Gate bridge, underneath the Eiffel tower, in front of Big Ben, through the Yale University art gallery, in front of the State Capitol of Utah, and across the surface of the moon.
We also ran through every conceivable weather scenario: rain, snow, sunshine...
We can’t even begin to imagine what you guys will come up with for Run Free 2014. But we can’t wait to see.
So how about it, Kickstarter? Will you help us fake the greatest adventure race the world has never seen?
Risks and challenges
Since we've already done this once, we're confident that we've developed a good system for getting everyone's rewards to them on time. We've got manufacturers lined up, artwork ready, and surveys written.
We also developed contingency plans last year for when things beyond our control keep people from getting their rewards (like lost postage, bad weather, Somalian pirates, etc.).
While nothing is certain, we feel confident that we can do this again.
One more thing: since we recently completed another project (the Procrastinator's Calendar), we wanted to address that here. While the projects SORTA overlap (this one is funding while that one is fulfilling), our plan is to ship out the rewards for that project before this project is even finished with the funding stage. That way the fulfillment phases won't overlap at all. We feel confident that we can handle both of these projects without having one affect the other negatively.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
I "ran" in Run Free 2013, but this is a whole different beast. Do you think I'll be able to handle this new, more intense race?
Yes. While your apprehension is understandable, there's no reason for it. If you were in good enough shape to fake a marathon, you're in good enough shape to fake an adventure race!
And remember: the race is whatever you want it to be. If some of the obstacles you're imagining are too tough for you at this stage of your fitness journey, just stop imagining those obstacles. POOF! They're gone!
See how easy this is?
Yes! If you can get five friends to do the race with you, you’ll all save money by pitching in on a Race Team Party Pack.
Otherwise, simply increase your pledge by the amount of the registration you want.
For instance, if you’re at the $50 level and you want another $50 registration, pledge $100 at that level. If you are at the $25 level and you just want to add a $10 registration, pledge $35 total at the $25 level.
After funding ends, we'll send out surveys to make sure we know exactly what you pledged for.
We're not sure! This is our initial mockup, but we'll probably have to adjust a few things for final production, depending on the constraints of the manufacturers (how tiny of details they can replicate, etc.). The basic idea for the logo will be the same, but we may have to make tweaks to translate it to the final product.
Why should I pay $75 for an obstacle? Aren't you going to be choosing obstacles from the pictures we submit anyways?
Great question! Yes, we'll definitely be sourcing obstacles from the crowd submissions on race day.
But at the $75 level, we'll work with you on the name and obstacle description too, making it truly personalized.
Maybe you'll name it the "YOUR NAME HERE TUNNEL OF DEATH!" or the "YOUR NAME HERE TOWER OF FIRE!" or the "YOUR MOTHER-IN-LAW'S NAME HERE VORTEX OF UNHAPPINESS!"
