How we plan to use these funds:
1. Film Larry in South Dakota this February to document his winter training & begin his video blogs
2. Travel to Europe to film two very important research studies
3. Interview geneticists studying Parkinson's and collecting 10,000 genetic samples of Parkinson's patients
4. Interview Larry's neurosurgeon in San Francisco
5. Travel to states such as Ohio, Georgia, New York, Connecticut and more to film doctors and researchers that are working on curing Parkinson's and improving lives
6. Find the youngest person with Parkinson's
7. Travel to South Dakota this May & June to follow Larry as he rides across his state
8. Many more interviews with experts, spokespersons, and patients in the Parkinson's field
Ride with Larry is an inspirational documentary that puts a human face on the day-to-day fight against Parkinson's disease. Larry Smith, a retired police captain, beloved small-town baker, and avid cyclist has had Parkinson's disease for nearly 20 years. This spring we will follow him as he bikes across his state to raise awareness about the benefits of recumbent cycling and Parkinson's.
Larry refuses to give up or submit to the prognosis of a wheel chair. Instead, Larry demonstrates the power of keeping your body active and mind positive, proving that sometimes the best cure is living life to its fullest. As Larry’s wife Betty states: “if you love life, and have a life that you love, you’ll fight for it.”
We look forward to bringing you this inspirational story, Ride with Larry.
Thank you for your support.
TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATION
Your donation is tax deductible!!! Ride with Larry is a fiscally sponsored project of the International Documentary Association (IDA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization. Contributions on behalf of Ride with Larry are payable to IDA and are tax deductible less the value of any goods or services received, as allowed by law. The value of goods and services being offered is noted under each donation level.
For anyone with Parkinson’s disease or has a family member or friend with Parkinson’s disease, this is for you. You will make this project happen.
We want to make a difference in the lives of those with Parkinson’s disease, family members, and caretakers. Beyond Parkinson's disease, anyone facing a life altering illness can find inspiration in Ride with Larry.
For each of the filmmakers involved, Parkinson’s disease is a personal story, a part of our lives. Larry and Betty are the perfect example of two regular people facing enormous challenges and we want to show how they do it. Together with his family and community, Larry will ride across South Dakota pushing his limits and expanding the boundary of possibilities for those with Parkinson's disease. Weaved amongst this narrative is an intimate portrait of the every day battle against Parkinson’s, the voice therapy, exercise routine, medications, treatments, and the community love that makes it all possible and worthwhile.
Please join our project. You can join Ride with Larry’s incredible team that proudly includes the Davis Phinney Foundation, created by renowned cyclist Davis Phinney after his own diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease, the National Parkinson Foundation, EGR International, BIGCAT HPV, & Exercycle, makers of the Theracycle forced exercise bike currently being used in the Cleveland Clinic’s medical study to find the link between cycling and the improvements in Parkinson’s patients.
WHAT HAPPENS IF WE DON’T RAISE OUR GOAL?
This is the scary part. We won’t receive any of the funds, WE LOSE IT ALL! If we are even a dollar short by the end of our deadline EVERYTHING WILL BE REFUNDED and no rewards can be given! PLEASE help us prevent this from happening!
This project couldn’t happen without contributions from you and it makes a huge difference. And to show this appreciation we have lined up some great gifts that we would like to give in return.
Follow us on Facebook and Twitter as we’ll periodically announce new rewards.
Our current rewards lineup includes: Ride with Larry t-shirts, cycling jerseys, a two night getaway at the beautiful La Costa Resort and Spa right beside the pristine beaches of San Diego, CA; a single night stay at The Pearl Hotel, a hip boutique hotel right in the heart of San Diego’s marina district on Point Loma. As we’re based in San Diego, we wanted to stop by, have dinner, and thank you in person for making a difference.

HOW KICKSTARTER WORKS
Kickstarter is a tool for anyone in the creative world to gather the help and support needed for their projects. Kickstarter’s platform allows filmmakers like us to share our project with the unlimited Internet community. We create a profile, set a fundraising goal and a time frame to meet it, and offer the rewards/incentives.
However, Kickstarter is an ALL OR NOTHING proposition. That means we NEED to meet our goal of $50,000. If we raise even a dollar short of our goal, we lose it all. Everything is refunded.
WHAT DOES THIS MONEY GO TOWARDS?
A documentary film takes an enormous amount of resources, time and effort to create! All funds raised go directly towards making this film. And $50,000 is just a part of our budget, which will be used to film this documentary. We will travel across the country to bring you Larry’s journey as well as interview doctors, athletes, and discover other captivating and inspirational stories along the way. These funds will also help make Larry’s ride this spring possible and then get this film out to as wide an audience as possible.
CAN WE RAISE MORE THAN OUR GOAL?
YES! And YES! $50,000 is just A PART of our budget and Kickstarter allows you to raise as much money as is given before the deadline. This means more ability for us, the filmmakers, to travel and collect interviews, more time filming Larry, the chance for us to film a special Parkinson’s choir, more assistance in getting us the equipment needed, hiring a composer, editor, and sound designer, among others.
CAN I GIFT MY REWARD?
YES! You can also donate to the film in another person’s name. To do this, just proceed with the normal donation process in your name (this is for billing purposes and tax-deduction purposes). After our fundraising deadline, we will send you a message that will ask you for your t-shirt size, name of the person you want your donation to be in, address, and other important information. Please just make sure to reply and tell us who you would like to receive the award or be named for the donation.
WHEN WILL I GET MY REWARD?
We want to get you your reward a soon as possible. Once the project is funded and the deadline is over, you will begin to see the effects of your contribution. You will first see your name on our website listed on our supporters page. After funding is complete, we will contact you regarding T-shirt size and shipping address.
WHEN CAN I SEE THE FINISHED FILM?
We’re working on it! Larry’s ride is this June and we’ll be there to film it. There are many steps to go and we intend to take every one. There’s filming, editing, the music, and more! We hope this film will be out sometime by the end of 2011 to the Spring of 2012.
HOW WILL YOU KNOW MY T-SHIRT SIZE AND SHIPPING ADDRESS?
After you’ve donated, you’ll receive a message from the filmmakers. Please reply as soon as possible. In that message we’ll ask that you provide us with all relevant information such as your T-shirt size, address, etc.
I’VE MADE MY PLEDGE BUT WOULD LIKE TO ADD MORE?
This is a question we really like to answer. You can absolutely do this and we are all the more grateful for your generosity. If you want to change your incentive reward by increasing your pledge amount, just sign into your Kickstarter account. Go to our campaign page, the green “Back This Project” button is now a blue “Manage Your Donation” button. Click it and you can enter a new amount and choose a new incentive.
WHAT ELSE CAN I DO TO HELP?
After donating, the next most important thing you can do is announce our campaign to your friends. Share our trailer, link to our Kickstarter campaign and website on your Facebook profile and Twitter feed for all friends and family to see. We ask you in this time of giving to help support a story of inspiration that can give back to the community.

I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE AN EVEN BIGGER IMPACT!

Your name would appear in our credits and on IMDB as such.
