Happily Ever Aftr is about a kidnapped princess who uses a dating app to find knights to come and rescue her. It also follows the princesses captor, Gretchen Grimhold, as she comes to terms with what love means to her. For generations, the firstborn Grimhold child has kidnapped a bride for marriage. So naturally, Gretchen follows tradition and kidnaps a beautiful bride for herself. This, unfortunately, does not sit well with her father who is not so accepting. Gretchen must now come to terms with her own sexuality as well as deal with the pressures put on her by her father.
Last August we came to Kickstarter with this weird little idea. Turns out a lot of people out there dig weird little ideas because the first issue of Happily Ever Aftr was a success beyond anything we could have wished for. Nicolas and I were like “Say what!?” and worked our butts off getting the book done for everyone. It was so amazing to see the huge amount of support for us and the project. I was beyond happy!
But now we’re ready for something bigger. Something much more excellent! Something that’s just… just… like super cool, you know? We’ve been working on this exciting project since before we even launched the last project. The surprise is ruined by this project's title but I’m excited to bring to you the...
The full graphic novel will continue the story of the kidnapped Princess Emily and her captor Gretchen. We’ll explore the struggle Gretchen has trying to understand how she fits into the world as she discovers her own sexuality. We’ll meet more hilariously pathetic suitors that try to rescue Princess Emily. And hopefully, the King will stop being a butt about the whole thing! The Happily Ever Aftr graphic novel is fun, heart-warming, and best of all THE WHOLE STORY.
A whole graphic novel?! You dang right a whole graphic novel. We’re talking over 110 pages of princesses, knights, dating apps, cheesy suitors, and self-acceptance. One of the biggest comments I got after the first project was that it was too short. The original plan was to keep releasing single issues until the story was done, but one night while staring lovingly into pictures of all you wonderful backers I thought, “No! They deserve the whole thing in one shot!” So I emailed Nicolas, who I imagine was doing the same thing as me and said “We need to do the WHOLE STORY for these wonderful people” and he replied in a split second with a single, but powerful “Yes”
As you can see from the preview images below Nicolas has taken his art game to the next level. Everything is so crisp and clean and colourful. It's a delight to just get lost in every single panel. In terms of writing, I've also concentrated on crafting a tight and focused narrative. Creating authentic and real characters was my goal in the first issue and that's still very much the focus today.
So 15k huh? Yeah, that number is pretty intense so I wanted to show how it all breaks down. Keep in mind I’ve put in some of my own money so if some of the numbers look a little low you’re probably right.
Production and printing take up the largest chunk of the pie cause they're the most important. Though it seems daunting with your help we can reach it and go beyond.
You bet your sweet behind we have rewards. I tried to build a giant replica of the Happily Ever Aftr world but I couldn't get the land permissions. Sad really, I was gonna include a Pony Mage pony ride, and a suitor decapitator game. Oh well, maybe next time. But what kind of rewards do we have for this campaign? Well check it out!
I am incredibly honoured to be a part of this amazing Kickstarter initiative so I really wanted to offer something special. To go with the gold theme I have scoured the fantasy dating sites for three incredibly rare suitors. We’ll be offering up these suitors exclusively to backers of this project with something special. Gold Foil! The Suitor Mini-Prints were super fun additions to the past project and I’m excited to bring them back. The Gold Suitors are the most prime singles to ever walk the planet. The Gold Mini-Prints feature art from hyper-talented artist Nino Vecia. I had met Nino at the March Comic Con this year in Toronto and was blown away. His digital painting style is great and perfect for lathering up with gold. Stay tuned we'll be revealing the full colour versions soon.
The original Suitor Mini-Prints are back as well. This time they are not broken down into separate tiers but rather in big chunks. That means if you’ve missed out on some suitors from the first project then you can finally complete your collection. And if you’re just coming to the project fresh we have all fifty (50) Suitor Mini-Prints available too.
Every chapter in the book has a relevant pin-up to go with it. We're offering up these awesome pin-ups exclusively to you wonderful backers as prints. You’ll be able to get a single print of your choosing or if you're so inclined you can receive the entire folio of prints! The Prints will be 6.5x10.25 inches and full colour. The styles run the gamut from cartoony to pixelated. It's truly a collection of unique and talented skills.
Last time we had love letters for people, and I was totally planning on doing that again but then I found it! A magical book that looks inside of you and tells you the greatest love story ever. So naturally, I tore that book apart and am offering individual pages for you! If you back the tier and get a magical page you'll receive a micro-story (roughly 500 words) featuring a romance of your choosing. When surveys go out you'll be able to let the magical page know what you want, and you'll get it! That’s how magic works right? It's probably obvious but all love is allowed. We love all love here at camp Happily Ever Aftr.
Are you looking at all these Suitor Mini-Prints and thinking to yourself “Alright, cool. But where is someone that looks like me?” Well, I got you covered. At the $50+ reward level, you’ll get a custom Suitor Mini-Print complete with a drawn picture of you and a hilarious bio. Here are some examples of custom mini-prints we had from the past.
Shane has graciously offered up three (3) slots on his commission list for backers of this project. He'll be doing 8x11 watercolour commissions for backers. Usually, when we're at conventions Shane's always busy pumping out sketches for people. He's great at it.
UPDATE: We're sold out of the Tiny Shane commissions but luckily the highly loveable Shawn Daley has stepped up and is offering his services for more commissions! Check out his stuff!
Happily Ever Aftr isn’t the only comic I write, oh no I have a ton more. If you love graphic novels then you’ll definitely want to get these. Similar to the previous project we have Black Hole Hunters Club Vol 1: Papa Don’t Preach up for grabs as well as Deep Sea. But new to this Kickstarter is a brand new graphic novel in the BHHC line called Biggest Thing Ever. Shane and I worked with a bunch of different artists to tell individual stories about each of the bounty hunters and the biggest thing they’ve ever killed. Each artist came to the project with their own interpretations of the characters and each story turned out fantastic! You can grab just one or all three if you’re really cool.
Since we're offering up the Suitor Mini-Prints again we recognise that some backers may already have the Mini-Prints. So we've developed something really cool as an alternative. Fantasy Pen Pals! How it will work is that different tiers will have different amounts of letters you'll receive ranging from two (2) to four (4). When we mail out the initial package you'll receive one letter written by a fantasy character. You'll be tasked to respond to that letter and send it back. This will continue until you've gotten all of your letters. It's super fun because we'll be role-playing together and creating a narrative. And I mean, who doesn't love receiving letters!
Here's a preview of the book! Enjoy :D))
UPDATE: Unlettered previews (/'0')/
*Stage lights up. Synth heavy 80's music plays. Ricky, Nicolas, and Andrew burst on stage in tight spandex. Wide, almost painful looking smiles on their faces* Hi I'm Ricky *does wicked dance flourish* ... Hmm, at least that's how I'd like it to go. In a perfect world, I'd introduce myself like that all the time! But in this less than perfect world, we'll stick with regular introductions. Here's the team working on the Happy Ever Aftr.
Ricky Lima, Writer: Ricky started storytelling when he was a little fetus in the womb. As his brain developed so did his stories. Now his brain is huge and his stories are awesome. Previous work includes Black Hole Hunters Club, Deep Sea, and the strange tale Huma-am. He has been self-publishing comics for close to five years now and is currently enrolled in the Humber College Creative Book Publishing Program. He hopes to one day publish a book so cool that it starts the next ice age.
Nicolas "Lonku" Londeix, Artist: Nicolas has been written about in ancient Sumerian texts. His art is prophesied to bring about the destruction and subsequent reconstruction of the world. It is unclear whether this is a good thing or a bad thing, but it sure as hell is a badass thing! Previous work includes Happily Ever Aftr #1, Bartkira, art for LettersProject charity, and the destruction of Earth.
Andrew Thomas, Letterer: Andrew is a force of nature. An actual hurricane who grew tired of being wind and instead became flesh and bone. He now channels his power into art, design, and comic making goodness. Previous work includes Auric of the North, and Captain Canuck. Andrew is the keeper of the letters at Chapterhouse.
Risks and challenges
Nicolas and I are no strangers to making awesome comics so we're confident we can get the book out to you in a timely manner. As extra insurance, we've also teamed up with the wonderful people at Chapterhouse. They will be helping with printing, so the final product is going to be wonderfully printed and feel so nice.
If any delays arise you will be notified promptly with information on what's going on and what we're doing about it. We're too excited to get this book into your hands so we're gonna work very hard to make it happen.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
