Hi! I'm Rick Barr, a musician from Columbus, Ohio. I've been playing guitar since the tender age of 12 (going on 30 years), recording music since 2002, and playing live since 2012. While many of you know me as a performer, the songwriting and recording has been a big part of my life for quite a while. I've recorded 11 albums, six of them originals. The equipment and software has changed over the years, but my passion for writing new music hasn't.
Now, I find myself at the tail end of recording what has ended up being my biggest project to date. While previous albums consisted of random genre-spanning tunes, this one has a full, cohesive story to tell.
The Huck House
Before we talk about the album I want to talk about something very important to me.
While the music in this album will entertain, the story is an important one. Our main character, Ed, is abused and bullied, and doesn't see a way out. That is why I am donating 10% of ALL earnings from this campaign and beyond to Huck House, a shelter in Columbus, OH that helps troubled teens. They offer great services and counselling, and are a terrific organization.
I'm donating to them because they are an important part of the Columbus community and as a victim of bullying myself I understand what it meant to be bullied, to be put down, and to be constantly on edge. Huck House helps kids who had it worse than me.
Set in the 1980s, "Seventy Lies" brings you into the world of Ed, a thirteen year-old boy who lives with his mother and step-father in a low-income apartment. Ed's life is currently in turmoil; his mother loves him, but in a distant way, through a fog of painkillers. His step-father is distant, acts like he'd rather Ed not be there at all. The feeling is mutual.
Outside of his home, Ed faces regular and intense bullying. From his walk to school, to the classroom, and his trek back home, there is little room for escape. While the physical and emotional abuse are bad enough, he's also falling in love with a girl who probably doesn't know he exists.
Ed's only solace, his only source or comfort, is in the worlds he creates when he draws. In the safety of his room, he carefully creates detailed sketches that take his mind away from his troubles.
That serves as a succinct summary, but is only the beginning.
Initially conceived in 2007, I toyed with a handful of demos for songs, but it took until early 2014 before I was truly ready to dive into this project. After nearly two years of work, I knew that for the first time, I needed to get a professional to help me with the mastering of the album. I was doing okay on my own, but for something this important, "okay" wasn't going to be enough. I want this to be the absolute best sounding collection of music I've ever produced, for my benefit and yours.
To make it happen, Brian Skeel of Skeelmix is not only mastering the album, but also remixing. Yes, I spent countless hours on that part of it; channel placement, compression, EQ, effects, etc.....but quite frankly, I just don't have enough technical knowledge to make this truly great. So, I'm letting go of my ego in order to deliver the very best.
Did I mention that this was a big project? To date, there are 31 individual songs on the album, close to 100 minutes of music. Each song tells another part of the story, each one integral to the plot. Professional mixing and mastering isn't cheap, and while I would love to finance this on my own, to do so might mean another several months delay. Kickstarter means I can get it down and shipped in a matter of weeks.Aside from this simply being a "big" project, I truly believe that this is a musical experience unlike anything you've experienced before. While my tastes are based in classic rock, I don't use a template of any kind, and you'll hear a wide variety of styles. Each song is unique, yet they are all integral to the story.
This is, again, more ambitious than anything else I've done, and I'm tremendously excited to finally share it with you. I deeply appreciate everyone who takes the time to read this and help support a true labor of love.
Risks and challenges
Having spent so much time working on this project, I am confident that there are very few risks involved in delivering rewards on time. The production of CDs will be completed as soon as all of the tracks have been mastered. If there is a hitch in the process, you will be notified immediately, I will make it my priority to get those rewards to you ASAP.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
