NEW ADD-ON! 11 books for $11. See *reward* section for all of the glorious details.

"Now that short fiction has become as standardized as the SATs and Common Core—all in order to 'judge' and 'rank' writers—I'm excited to see what Richard Thomas brings to the game. Gamut will be the new magazine not written for the little old lady in Dubuque."

—Chuck Palahniuk, author of Fight Club

"Gamut will be cool, and it will be out there, right on the edges of fiction. I can't wait."
—Irvine Welsh
, author of Trainspotting

“As publishing venues grow ever more polarized—niche market over here, stadium rock over there—the need for passionate, thoughtful, unafraid publishing space is crucial. Enter Gamut.”
—Marcus Sakey, author of Brilliance

"I beg to differ with Mr. Palahniuk: There's a fabulous indie bookstore in Dubuque, and little old ladies have been known to write some astonishing speculative fiction. Some of it might even end up in this magazine, which promises to bring together the fresh and the dark and the extraordinary. Look for great, weird things from [Gamut]."
—Rebecca Makkai, author of The Hundred-Year House

"A killer lineup of creators."
—Rose O'Keefe
, Publisher, Eraserhead Press

“The heavyweight talent behind Gamut is a promise of great things to come.”
—K. Allen Wood
, Publisher, Shock Totem Publications

“It doesn't matter if a writer has a big name, a pen name, or no name, if they're writing excellent and edgy fiction, Richard Thomas has probably read their work. But Richard's a busy guy—seriously, read his bio—and doesn't have time to meet for coffee or martinis or bowling anytime someone wants to talk about what they should be reading next. Thankfully, now there is Gamut, which is sure to become an index of some of the best fiction writers working today.”
—Diane Goettel
, Executive Editor, Black Lawrence Press

Gamut will include mostly fiction (some original, some reprints) but also columns, non-fiction, art, flash fiction, poetry, and maybe even a serial memoir or novella. I have a word count per month in mind, based on my budget, and I’m looking to release new content several times a week.

I will start off by publishing work via solicitations and will then open it up to submissions later in 2016. We will pay 10 cents per word for original fiction (double the current professional standard) and 3 cents per word for reprints.

The calendar will be something like this:

  • Mondays—New Fiction
  • Tuesdays—Column
  • Wednesdays—Reprint Fiction
  • Thursdays—Freelance
  • Fridays—Flash Fiction (stretch goal)
  • Saturday Night Special—Serialization (stretch goal)
  • Sundays—Poetry.

Well, if you’ve read any of the anthologies I’ve edited (The New Black, Burnt Tongues, The Lineup: 20 Provocative Women Writers, or Exigencies) then you know what my aesthetic is, for sure. Also, you can see the work (and authors) I’ve published at Dark House Press. And of course, my own writing (and YES, I will be publishing some of my own work at Gamut as well, new and reprint).

So I’m open to:

  • Fantasy
  • Science fiction
  • Horror
  • Neo-noir, crime, mystery, thrillers
  • Magical realism
  • Transgressive
  • Southern gothic
  • Literary fiction
  • Weird / bizarro
  • Poetry

Anything done with innovation, heart and emotion—that's what I want. Everything I enjoy reading and writing typically leans toward the dark side, but I have been known to embrace lighter work, and humor, now and then. It just has to MOVE me. And I like to be surprised.

Also, diversity is important to us—so whatever your sex, race, orientation, religion, country of origin, current location—send us work, we want to read it.

To date, here are the authors that have given me a verbal commitment to publish original and/or reprint fiction at Gamut:

Stephen Graham Jones, Laird Barron, Brian Evenson, Usman T. Malik, Matt Bell, Damien Angelica Walters, Letitia Trent, Mercedes M. Yardley, Alyssa Wong, Benjamin Percy, Lindsay Hunter, Axel Taiari, Amanda Gowin, Laura Benedict, Nathan Ballingrud, Dino Parenti, Ted E. Grau, Rebecca Jones-Howe, Sarah Read, Paula Bomer, Kelly Luce, Livia Llewelyn, Josh Malerman, Carmen Machado, Peter Tieryas, Kevin Catalano, Paul Tremblay, John Langan, Nina McConigley, Nik Korpon, Craig Wallwork, Steve Himmer, Antonia Crane, Steve Rasnic Tem, Kristi DeMeester, Tara Ison, David James Keaton, Cassandra Khaw, Nikki Guerlain, Lucy A. Snyder, JS Breukelaar, Helen Marshall, Amelia Gray, H. L. Nelson, Craig Davidson, Jacklyn Dre Marceau, and Lincoln Michel.

Poets will include:

Jeffrey Skinner, Nickole Brown, Cate Marvin, Paul Guest, Blas Falconer, Carrie Jerrell, Gary Jackson, Erica Dawson, Laura Van Prooyen, Simone Muench, Charles Jensen, Ace Boggess, and Jeannine Hall Gailey.

Each and every one of these authors is a voice that moves me, innovates, and takes risks on the page.

I’ve asked the following artists to be a part of Gamut

Luke Spooner (who will illustrate 52 original stories and 52 reprint stories, for a total of 104 images in our first year alone. He also did the art for our Facebook page, Twitter account, and our Kickstarter header.)

  • FICTION: Dino Parenti, Mercedes M. Yardley and Casey Frechette are going to be my fiction editors, and first readers. Each one of them brings something unique to the table—they're all excellent authors, and they understand my aesthetic.
  • POETRY: Even though poetry is not my strength, I want there to be a place for it at Gamut, so I’m putting Heather Foster (one of my favorite poets) in charge. She’ll be assisted by Whittney Jones.
  • COLUMNS: AND I’m excited to have three columnists providing regular material—Keith Rawson, Max Booth, and RK Arceneaux. Keith will focus on non-fiction, essays, and reviews, while Max and RKA will provide their own unique brand of humor and observation. We'll also employ a number of freelance essayists covering everything from film and books to travel and food.

Why Gamut, why now, why you, Richard? Gamut is a project I've wanted to start for a long time, but I couldn't get the numbers to work, and it came down to print, design, and mailing costs. So I think this option, the online magazine is a perfect solution.

I want to support the voices that aren't getting enough recognition, I want to pay a great rate (twice the going professional rate), and I want to surround myself with talented authors and artists that inspire me.

We need more markets like this, publishing edgy fiction that straddles the fence between genre and literary fiction, and based on the four anthologies I've edited, the books I've published at Dark House Press, and my own writing—I think we're in a golden age of dark fiction, and there is a demand for it.

(L to R): Staring Into the Abyss, Disintegration, Transubstantiate
(L to R): Staring Into the Abyss, Disintegration, Transubstantiate

Over the past eight years I've written and published over 100 short stories, at places as different as PANK and Cemetery Dance, storySouth and Pantheon, as well as three different collections—Herniated Roots, Staring Into the Abyss, and the upcoming Tribulations.

In 2016 I'll publish alongside Stephen King (for the fourth time!), Neil Gaiman, Jack Ketchum, and Clive Barker. I've also written three novels—Transubstantiate, Disintegration, and Breaker (the last two at Random House Alibi). I'm part of The Soul Standard (Dzanc Books) a novel-in-novellas as well with Nik Korpon, Axel Taiari, and Caleb Ross. And I'll have a craft book out in late 2016 or early 2017.

I've edited four anthologies—The New Black, Burnt Tongues (with Chuck Palahniuk and Dennis Widmyer) a Bram Stoker finalist, The Lineup: 20 Provocative Women Writers, and Exigencies.

I've also been the Editor-in-Chief at Dark House Press for the past three years. We've published the aforementioned Exigencies and The New Black, as well as Echo Lake by Letitia Trent, After the People Lights Have Gone Off by Stephen Graham Jones (Bram Stoker and Shirley Jackson finalist), The Doors You Mark Are Your Own by Okla Elliott and Raul Clement, and Vile Men by Rebecca Jones-Howe. In 2016 we'll publish Paper Tigers by Damien Angelica Walters, and Scratch by Steve Himmer.

I have an ongoing column at LitReactor.com, Storyville, where I also teach—my Short Story Class selling out every time I've taught it.

This past summer I also taught at the University of Iowa (and I'll be returning in 2016), in Transylvania, and was a speaker and panelist at conferences in WI, TX, and OK. I also teach at Story Studio Chicago. My latest travels took me to UC-Riverside (Palm Desert) where I was a visiting author at the low-res MFA program out there.

I got my MFA at Murray State University in 2012.

I love to write, it's the most fulfilling thing I've ever done, but I also love publishing other authors and showing the world the exciting stories that are being written today.

This is where it really starts to get interesting. I don't want to just raise the base amount, I want to exceed it, double it, triple it. That means we don't just need about 1,700 subscribers, but 3,000 or 4,500. Here are the ways that we'll make the website and content even better through stretch goals:

  • $52,000 - OUR BASE GOAL !REACHED!
  • $53,000 - SCHOLARSHIP !REACHED!
We will set up an annual scholarship to help 2 students. One will focus on low-res MFA students, as there typically isn't much funding for them, and the other will focus on authors not in a formal program.
  • $56,500 - STRIPPED: A MEMOIR by JACKLYN DRE MARCEAU
We will serialize this fantastic memoir. Jackee was in my MFA program with me, and she was one of the strongest authors I met there. This is a touching, heartbreaking, and alluring story that will have you stopping by our website every Saturday night to see what happens next. Trust me, you won't want to miss this. DESCRIPTION: Stripped: A Memoir showcases one woman’s fifteen-year experience as a professional exotic dancer. With contemporary American culture serving as a backdrop, this book is part coming-of-age tale, part exposé. Jackee struggles with the polarity of spending her days as a mother and student, and her nights as Betty, the strip club alter-ego, in order to support herself and her family. Stripped takes readers on a journey through the hidden world of exotic dancers from the inside out, beginning at the end of the millennia and forging through the tumultuous first decade of the twenty-first century.
  • $61,700 - FLASH FICTION FRIDAYS (1,000 more original words a week)
This allows us to publish original flash fiction (typically under 1,000 words per story) on a special, dedicated day—Flash Fiction Friday. It will also pay ten cents per word.
  • $66,900 - FREELANCE NON-FICTION (1,000 more words a week)
This allows us to publish additional non-fiction essays and articles, at ten cents per word.
  • $72,100 - MORE ORIGINAL FICTION (1,000 more words a week)
This allows us to publish additional original fiction, raising our monthly word limit and budget, at ten cents per word.
  • $73,660 - MORE REPRINT FICTION (1,000 more words a week)
This allows us to publish additional reprint fiction, raising our monthly word limit and budget, at three cents per word.
  • $83,660 - BEST OF GAMUT
This $10,000 will allow us to put together a print anthology of the first year of Gamut, selecting the best of our new fiction (about 15 stories). Authors will be paid the standard reprint rate of three cents per word. This money will go to the authors, cover art, interior art, layout and design, ARC printing, postage, and editing costs.

So, how did I come up with $52,000 as our base goal?

  • FICTION: The bulk of the costs are the fiction, looking to publish about 156,000 original words, and 186,000 of reprint fiction (I want there to be 5-10 reprints already on the website when we launch). So right there, at ten cents a word, and three cents a word, respectively, that's $15,600 and $5,580. New fiction and reprints will run every week.
  • POETRY: We've budgeted about $2,500 a year for weekly poetry.
  • WEBSITE: There will be at least $5,000 in website costs—design, layout, hosting, ongoing maintenance, etc.
  • COLUMNISTS: We're paying all of our columnists the same rate of tens cents a word, so we've budgeted $5,200 for that.
  • FEES: There are legal fees and licenses, costs to incorporate, etc.
  • ADVERTISING: We'll need to do some advertising, PR, and marketing.
  • SUBMISSIONS: Submittable costs $408 a year, at the lowest level.
  • ART: We're paying about $4,000 for original artwork, including new art with every story—a minimum of 104 pieces.
  • STAFF: I'm paying my staff for their time, as well as myself.
  • KICKSTARTER: And don't forget that Kickstarter takes 5%, plus 3-5% for processing, so up to $5,200.

In conclusion, I just want to say that I hope you'll be a part of this. Your $30 means a lot, and if you can help to spread the word, please do that, too. Don't you want all of your friends to hang out here? I know I do.

I'm a big fan of places like Tor, Cemetery Dance, Clarkesworld, F&SF, Apex, Nightmare, The Missouri Review, Hobart, Juked, Shock Totem, Shimmer, Black Static, Alfred Hitchcock, Ellery Queen, Conjunctions, Tin House and on and on and on. We need more pro-paying markets (at higher rates, too) and we need more publications that embrace both genre and literary fiction—hybrid fiction, genre-bending fiction, the new weird, transgressive, neo-noir, bizarro, and surrealism—and everything in-between.

I want authors who are taking chances to think of us first, to feel like there is a place in the literary and genre communities for risky, edgy fiction that takes your breath away. We have a chance here to do something special. Help me make this happen.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Peace,
Richard

Risks and challenges

I'm not worried about getting excellent fiction (new and reprint) that's not going to be a problem. I also know that when we open the door to submissions that we'll get great stories as well. I will have excellent staff around me to help read those submissions. I have a very talented web designer who will make sure that we can handle all of the website issues—that's probably the area I know the least about, but that's why I've hired him. The biggest concern I have is that I'd really like to get MORE words up every month, so I really hope we can not only raise the minimum needed, but succeed with some stretch goals as well. I have a very simple philosophy—I surround myself with talented people and let them do their job. The past eight years have allowed me to write, edit, teach, and publish—all skills I'll need to make Gamut a success. I hope you'll be a part of this project.
