SOUND FROM PAPER THIN MATERIAL
Thin film speaker technology is the space aged material of the future. It can be cut and shaped into just about any form imaginable. With the ability to reproduce a large range of audio frequencies, it can also be used to deliver audio in tight or unique spaces. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination!
THIN FILM PIEZO SPEAKER
Polyvinylidene Fluoride Piezoelectric Film (PVDF) is a relatively new class of piezo-electric device. PVDF material is a thin plastic polymer sheet with its molecules aligned in a uniform pattern. It has a electrically conductive coating deposited on each side of the sheet. To use PVDF material, an electrical connection to these conductive coatings is needed. Soldering directly to the film is not possible because the heat would destroy the underlying plastic PVDF material. This limitation is overcome by printing a conductive layer of ink around the edge of each side of the speaker film. Like all high-tech materials, this requires specialized manufacturing processes and the reason for this Kickstarter campaign.
This new form of material resembles thick sandwich wrap but has much more interesting properties.
AMAZING PIEZO-FILM PROPERTIES
Piezo film has an extremely high output potential, about 10 times greater than ceramic materials. Since the material is a thin, light weight, flexible film it can be glued onto shaped designs. The material has a high mechanical strength and is impact resistant.

Others have tried but we were determined to develop a low cost kit, with the Soundlazer brand name. We want this technology in the hands of as many experimenters and makers as possible. Our kit had to include both the speaker film and the electronics needed to produce good quality sound. A BETTER MATERIAL FOR A LOWER PRICE
As with all my Kickstarter projects, the point is to bring the cost of technology down and get it into the hands of experimenters, makers and project creators just like you.
This is not the lower quality, higher cost material you see available from measurement specialist companies and electrostatic speaker makers. This film is the speaker itself and uses a conductive coating that is not metallic in nature. That means you get a more crisp, high quality audio without that annoying "tin can" sound.

SIMPLER THAN AN ELECTROSTATIC SPEAKER
While they can behave similar to electrostatic speakers, thin film piezo speakers do not need the high voltages or complex electronics associated with electrostatic discharge to produce sound. You can pretty much use any standard audio amplifier and a small matching transformer to create quality sound. This means that PVDF material is perfect for installing in tight spaces where audio is needed. It can be formed and cut into different shapes leaving its uses up to your imagination.
Here are a few of my ideas for thin film speaker material:
THIN FILM SPEAKER DESIGN
As a designer, I like to explore concepts for new and interesting products. One obvious use for this amazing speaker film would be as a desktop stereo speaker system. The basic driver circuit is seen here and many additional features like bluetooth, MP3 and others could be added to turn this concept into a consumer product. For now, we are just exploring the possibilities.
SHAPING SOUND THE WAY YOU WANT IT
When you bend and shape the material, something interesting happens. The acoustic properties of not just the speaker but also air become obvious. Each shape you create will change the perceived sound and results in different qualities of audio reproduction. And just like in all speaker designs, the results will change with each frequency you try to put through the PVDF material. Your challenge will be to learn to create the ideal shape or shapes to create the best sounding audio.
THIS IS NOT ORDINARY PLASTIC
Polyvinylidene Fluoride Piezoelectric Film (PVDF) comes in many forms and this is no ordinary plastic. The molecules in this unique material need to be aligned in just the right way to allow them to create the piezo effect. This requires specialized equipment for making both the plastic sheets and the electrically conductive coatings on each side. This speaker film is the stuff of the future and has only been available in very limited quantities UNTIL NOW!
WE ARE IMPROVING THIS TECHNOLOGY
A few similar kits were made in Asia as prototypes in the last year but it has been extremely difficult to get any from the original batch. By partnering with the manufacturer and improving the design, I will be bringing this new thin film speaker technology to makers, experimenters and designers like you. WE WILL ALL BE THE DRIVING FORCE IN TURNING THIS TECHNOLOGY INTO SOMETHING SPECIAL!

All of my projects have a purpose and this one is no different. The PVDF speaker film used here is very unique, difficult to manufacture and expensive to turn into a reality. It took me two years of searching around the world to find a facility with the capabilities to turn this project into a reality. I need your help and they need my assistance in getting this new technology off the ground. You will see that other attempts have been made in the past to bring this concept to the mainstream. The piezo material I use here is superior and WE can do a better job. That's where the Kickstarter community comes in and what makes this project so special.

Risks and challenges
This project is my sixth here on Kickstarter. All my previous projects were successfully funded and all backer rewards shipped as promised or in the process of being fulfilled. While there are risks when backing products or ideas that don't exist yet, I have already built fully functional prototypes and simply need to manufacture the rewards once the goal is successfully reached.
