Easy to use and great way to learn about GPS.
As with all my projects here on Kickstarter, its about learning and getting cool technology into the hands of every backer. Sure, there are plenty of Arduino GPS loggers, geocaching and GPS tracking systems out there but none of them are as complete, current in technology, easy to use and available at such a low cost. I designed the GPS Cookie (and Sandwich) so that you can get started experimenting with this advanced GPS data logger right away.
How this project began
I love to travel and have been looking for a way to record the locations of everywhere I go. Many of the existing products on the market did not offer enough flexibility to create custom firmware or applications. All the existing Arduino compatible boards required external power sources and were comprised of shields, wires and a few boards sandwiched together. I needed something that could easily slip into my pocket so I could carry it wherever I went and write code on the fly. This is where the idea for GPS Cookie was born.
A Product and Prototyping Platform In One
The GPS Cookie is low cost, easy to use and its applications are only limited by your imagination! The compact form factor makes it easy to carry, experiment with and expand. Take it with you, throw it in a bag or redesign the whole thing to create your own unique version of this GPS data logger. The unique open access design let's you write code, make design changes and test your applications as you go. Think of the GPS Cookie or Sandwich as a prototyping platform and fully functional product in one great design.

Just insert two AAA batteries and any micro SD card to start recording and location data. The on board LEDs will tell you when the GPS Cookie is receiving satellite data and recording your route history. After your car ride, bike trip, walk or any other journey is over, just pull out the SD card, upload it to Google Earth and you are ready to view everywhere you or the GPS Cookie or Sandwich has been.
Works anywhere on the planet with Google Earth
We all know the amazing images inside of Google Earth and I am sure many of you have wanted to integrate your own data into their maps. Now with the GPS Cookie, you will be able to interact with Google Earth like never before.
Recorded NMEA-0183 data on both models includes:
- Time and date of all locations
- The route you traveled
- The speed, heading and direction at each moment
- The time and date of any stops you made
- Altitude above sea level

What is the difference between the GPS Cookie and GPS Sandwich?
Simple answer: There is no difference! It is just the shape of the circuit board. If you like the fun design of the GPS Cookie, pick that one to play with. If you like the more traditional look of a square circuit board, pick the Sandwich. If you can't decide, buy the "cooking" sheets with both versions on break-away circuit boards.
The Cookie and Sandwich are electronically identical and come with all the source code, schematics and bill of materials so you can build your own or reverse engineer my design any way you like. This project is open source so backers are free to do whatever they want with the technology.
I see other Arduino Compatible GPS data loggers out there for $100.00 or more. What makes the GPS Cookie and Sandwich different and how did you make it so reasonably priced?
There might even be some out there cheaper but don't be fooled. Many of those Arduino compatible boards don't include the GPS receiver and if they do, it is most likely older, outdated technology with poor receiver capabilities. In addition, the GPS Cookie and Sandwich have everything on the same board including batteries. These are fully functional units that you can use anywhere without worrying about wires, external power or poor signal strength. These are complete, self contained products that works right out of the box. All firmware will come pre-installed. Just add batteries and start recording GPS data out of the box.
On board power source makes it portable!
Most other Arduino compatible GPS boards require external power and other accessories to become fully functional. Some Arduino "shields" even require you to solder in an old style patch antenna GPS module.
The GPS Cookie and Sandwich are complete working units with the latest 2013 GPS technology that you can use out of the box. Add two AAA batteries and any micro SD card and you are ready to record GPS data.

It works right out of the box or you can write your own code! The uses are endless and up to you! It is fun with lots of practical uses too!
If you want to save money, you can order the Cookie or Sandwich without the USB breakout components attached. Should you decide later that you want to write your own code, the Cookie and Sandwich are compatible with Sparkfun's FTDI Basic board which you can purchase at any time.
Other open source GPS tracking devices use outdated GPS technologies. Both the GPS Cookie and GPS Sandwich use the latest in 360 degree, 50 channel satellite receiver technology. No cheap ceramic patch antennas here. The Cookie and Sandwich use U-Blox compatible chipsets with high gain, omni-directional fractal antennas offering over -162dBm tracking sensitivity.

Based on the Arduino UNO and a GPS receiver shield, the COOKIE and Sandwich can be hacked and programmed to do whatever your imagination can come up with.

Like all my Kickstarter projects, it's all about getting the community involved by backing group purchases. Risks and challenges

The simple answer is no, it can be kept in a purse, pocket, bag or even in the glove compartment of most vehicles.
As long as there isn't any metal between the antenna and the sky, the GPS Cookie should get a very strong satellite signal. It won't work in a metal tool box, car's trunk or any other metal container!
Unlike most other Arduino compatible shields and GPS data loggers, the GPS Cookie has a 360 degree antenna and does not need a certain side facing the sky. You can use it in any position you prefer.
This is a harder question to answer. Power is consumed more when the GPS signal is weak or non-existant. From my initial tests with the basic firmware, I am getting 15-24 hours of recording time. Battery life could be extended from days to weeks with the addition of your own custom code. A vibration detector could be added to save even more power when the GPS Cookie is sitting still for long periods of time.
The battery life and features can be changed and improved by you! That's the whole point to my projects here on Kickstarter.
