Rice Paper Scissors is a San Francisco-based pop-up restaurant inspired by the sidewalk dining and street food of Vietnam.
After six years, we finally found a permanent location (!!!) and are using this Kickstarter to help bring Vietnamese food to the sunny microclimate of the Mission District.
Between little red stools, Cambodian pop music, and a rotating menu of handmade regional Vietnamese dishes (complete with California sensibilities), we promise you’ll fall in love with the experience too. Help us open by the end of year by making a pledge!
We're also throwing a birthday buffet bash and Kickstarter party on Monday, March 27th at the PizzaHacker. Kickstarter backers get a special menu item: the Banh Mizza. Tickets are $20 are available on Eventbrite and at the door.
WHAT YOUR PLEDGE WOULD FUND
Our future restaurant is located at Folsom and 22nd Street in San Francisco’s Mission District. We need to raise $35,000 to complete the interior design. Your pledge will help fund the finishing touches that will make the space truly special with:
- lanterns, decor and a fresh set of little red stools from Vietnam
- buildout of the most epic bathroom featuring a mural from a local artist
- a bar where you can enjoy beer and wine after work
If we hit our reach goal of $45,000, we will build an outdoor seating area, complete with heat lamps!
Since our very first pop-up in February 2011, we’ve popped up in almost every place you can imagine -- from bars to one-car garages -- with big one exception: at a restaurant of our very own.
Along the way we’ve wagged our finger at Anthony Bourdain, grilled octopus on the street with Eddie Huang and shared our recipes with Food & Wine Magazine.
We run a busy catering program and weekly pop-up at Mojo Bicycle Cafe, but have been missing a permanent location where we can serve Vietnamese comfort food in a fun and vibrant setting.
We want to open a casual neighborhood restaurant that brings the look, feel and food of Saigon to San Francisco. Think bright colors, tropical plants, pyramids of fresh fruit and playful plateware! We want it to feel cozy yet as if you’ve just stepped into another country. After all, vacation is a state of mind.
We’ll be open for lunch, brunch and dinner. The menu will feature noodle soups and rice plates that keep you warm on those cold San Francisco nights, plus street food and dim sum bites.
Our menu will include Bun Bo Hue (spicy lemongrass beef noodle soup), Chicken Pho, Pork Garlic Noodles, Fried Egg Sandwiches, Yellow Curry with Udon Noodles, and Handmade Lamb Dumplings. We’ll continue to make everything from scratch, like our shrimp chips and oyster sauce, to offer Vietnamese food that is soulful and exciting.
And of course, beer and wine to enjoy it with!

Risks and challenges
This is our first restaurant and we’ll be starting from scratch, from the layout of the space, to the kitchen installation, to the paint we’ll put on the walls.
We’re excited to work with a talented team of local artists, photographers, graphic designers, architects, woodworkers, interior designers, contractors, ceramicists to make this a beautiful place.
Our challenges are getting our permits moving along and putting in a gas line, but we are confident that everything will be pushed through. After being a pop-up for six years, we’re used to being scrappy and industrious.
We hope to open in the next eight months to a year. Though it depends largely on the permitting and construction timeline, we will do our best to get it open as soon as we can!
It’s been a challenge to find an affordable restaurant space in this rental market. Now that we’ve found the space, we just need your help building it out, and of course to come and enjoy the food!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
