About this project
Tristan and Zooey are finishing the second year of their relationship, and wondering if there should be a third. Zooey, highly dependent on rituals and structure, has spent months planning their road trip to “The Thing” – a mysterious holdover of roadside Americana. Tristan, a quirky, self-obsessed transgendered man, prefers the security of his home life and tending to his fluffy cat Esteban to the uncertainty of the open road. While headed toward The Thing, the seamless pilgrimage Zooey had envisioned becomes littered with obstacles as strange encounters with gas station attendants, fighting couples, and Esteban’s looming UTI weigh them down. When the preserved landscape turns from desert to the narcotic repetition of fast food chains and commercial billboards, the couple wonders if the promise of “The Thing” will dispel their emotional ambiguity, or lead them to a dead end.
MFA thesis short film written and directed by Rhys Ernst (MFA Candidate, California Institute of the Arts). The 7 day shoot will be in Los Angeles in January 2010, and will involve a dedicated and talented team of young filmmakers and artists (some traveling in from as far as NYC and the northwest). Pre-production is currently in full swing, and the film will be completed by May 2011. We will be shooting on 16mm, and mostly in a car, so gas and car mount rental expenses will add up.
