About

Before we talk about the game:

Kickstarter employees are currently trying to get their union recognized, and the senior leadership at the company is refusing to recognize this union.

While the union hasn't called for a boycott, it has called for people to apply pressure to the leadership at Kickstarter, and get them to recognize Kickstarter United. So, with this I'm calling on backers, other creators, and anyone even reading this page to message Kickstarter and demand that they recognize the union that their employees have put together.

#RecognizeKSRU. For more info, head to their website to support them, and follow them on twitter.

Now, onto this project:

There aren’t many stories I enjoy more than teens coming together to fight against incredible odds. These kids from different families, who do different things, who may not even be friends, have to come together to fight something that is bigger than all of them. Mix that with spandex, giant robots, and a vague theme to the costumes and what’s not to love?

Power Rangers, Animorphs, Sailor Moon, She-Ra and similar shows have always resonated with me because they are about coming together and doing the right thing. When in the face of danger, these characters don’t run, but instead ask “If Not Us, Then Who?”

We are at our best when we fight together; when we fall together; when we work together; and when we collectively gather to fight against a villainous force that threatens everyone.

We also have giant robots and matching suits—and that shreds.

To play this game, you will need nothing more than a deck of cards, goofy ideas, and friends

When you start  your game, the group will generate the Heroes that this season is about. This can either be done by brainstorming with your friends, or by rolling on tables that the book provides! Each hero will have a name, pronouns, a signature weapon, a hero color, and atleast one of ten personality traits.

A Character Card, Not Representative of the final product

These don't need to be one Hero per player. You're all creating this show together- working as a team. Each of you may gravitate to a specific character, but it's not a "I am playing the role of" as much as it as "I'm the main writer of-"

Once you have your rangers set up- you'll figure out the mentors, the villains, the theme for the Hero team, and your general setting! These can all be brainstormed, but the book comes with tables ready to help!

Traits

There are ten personality traits that you can use to flesh out your characters. Think of your Hero’s personality as defined by the broad brush strokes that these kind of shows use. The traits are: Leader, Savvy, Beauty, Tough, Comedy, Loner, Cute, Heart, Noble, and Evil.

The Leader takes charge of the team, makes the hard decisions, and the team looks to them for guidance.

Anyone who is Savvy does the research, has technical know-how, and will make gadgets!

A Beauty is someone who is extremely concerned with appearances and how well they are regarded by others.

Tough heroes have strong fighting skills that are paramount above all else.

Someone with the Comedy trait is exactly what it says on the tin: they are the one who tries to make everyone else happy.

Loners are aloof and tend to operate separately from the team. They claim to “not need others.”

The Cute trait is someone who is immature and childish, but beloved by the team.

Heart represents the love that this character has for their team, the love they receive back, and a high emotional intelligence.

Noble represents bravery, courage, and that general “it factor.” It’s the “If Not Us, Then Who?” mentality.

The final trait is Evil, and this can mean a few different things. Evil can be “I work for the bad guy,” or it can be as simple as “I will look out for myself first and foremost.” It can also be something that shows up later; play it up for the most dramatic reveal!

 Okay, How do I play?

At the start of each turn, the players will draw an "episode" card from the deck. The person who draws it reads the first prompt on the card, called a Beat. They talk about what happened in the episode at that point, taking feedback and ideas from everyone else. Once everyone is satisfied with that scene, or they start to answer the next Beat on the card, the next player takes over and continues the story.

An example episode card, not representative of the finished product.

This continues until the last beat is read, and the episode is concluded. Then, the group decides what was the best moment of this episode? This doesn't have to be a scene we saw, since we are painting with broad strokes for this, so feel free to make something up too. After that, we pick the MVP,  which is whatever character had the most stand out moment in this episode!

Using our answers to that, we give the Heroes and/or the Villains Energy. This is representative of the momentum in the story that each of the two groups have. So if Villains have more stand out scenes, or do cooler things, they'll get the energy.

Over the course of the season, you'll gain energy in a few different ways. But it will all come to a head when you draw the Finale card. Then, you'll pit the two factions energy against each other, and find out if the season has a happy ending, or if the villains come out on top.

STRETCH GOALS

This campaign has some exciting stretch goals I'm hyped to share with you!

Our first stretch goal, at $5735 is a Roll20 Module for the  game! This will be made by Quinn, (she/her)! She is fantastic and also made the sheets for her and Kavi's Songs For The Dusk, so I am so excited to have her help in making the roll20 module possible!

Next up, at $6660, is a Twitter Bot made by Caro !(They/Them) Caro has worked on the Spindlewheel Bot and the Beam Saber bot, and the two of us are incredibly excited to get to work on the INUTW bot! More information about it's features will come as time progresses!

(HIDDEN STRETCH GOAL :3)

At $9250, Taylor LeviathanFiles (He/Him) will bring us "This is Gonna Be Our Year", A sports-based hack for If Not Us, Then Who?

This is gonna be our year, I can feel it.

There’s no tale more compelling than the hearts of a team uniting in the face of overwhelming odds, of a unified front presented on the field, of the thrill of victory in the face of defeat. From little league practice to the global stage, our team has come from nothing to the precipice of greatness, and it all boils down to one opportunity, one shot.

You can watch all the tape, comb all the data, but it’s what’s in your heart that’ll tell you how you’ll act when you’re tired and you just want to quit. We are at our best when we play together; when we lose together; when we collectively gather to fight against our rivals who threaten our glory. Their time is done. It's over. Screw 'em. This is our time.

This is gonna be our year.

The way this stretch goal works, is that everything from  $9251 to $11,100 will be used to pay every contractor MORE. Before any money of this goes to me, every contractor will get a bonus. So please, fund this one up! Help me pay the contractors more money!

The final goal is $12,210- which means everything I have put into this game already is reimbursed. It is a total success, and it rules. Everything past this goes into funding my game design and life, and I am endlessly grateful for it.

About the Team

My name's Riley Hopkins, I was raised in Iowa and now live in Chicago, IL. I use He/They pronouns and have been designing games for almost two years now. I made Interstitial: Our Hearts Intertwined, and podcast frequently at The Orange Groves!

The cover art was done by Cody Hawley (He/Him), Cody is one of my best friends and does some fantastic work on his own stuff. He's currently working on a comic, and you can keep up with his work and commission him over at @HodyCawley on Twitter!

The interior art was done by CrossMirage (She/They). The helmets were such a dope part of this art

Sasha Reneau (They/Them) is doing the cards and the logo! They're a freelance graphic designer. Their website is www.sashareneau.com and their twitter is @sasha_reneau

Risks and challenges

Physical copies were my biggest stumbling block with Interstitial, but this time I've done more research into it before hand. I have a non-drivethrurpg source for printing, shipping, and all the inbetweens. The quality should be better and the timeliness of it should be better.

But regardless, it's an important thing to be clear about!
