About this project
DC Mobile Design, LLC is a small start-up located in Portland, Oregon. We started the company with the goal of creating the most comfortable, ergonomic and functional iPad case available. We also wanted to create a product that didn't sacrifice quality design in the development process. The project started the day we bought our first iPad. Within days we had our first prototype using common household items.
What you see now is the evolution of a product that combines beauty, form and function. With the help of our engineers and designers at Fuse, Inc., we are now ready to tool and manufacture this amazing product. We call this unique product "Clutch." Using the iPad with the Clutch is a transformational experience. People who have had the opportunity to use it simply can't wait til they can have one of their own.
Clutch (patent pending) is a complete protective case system for the iPad with three major features: (1) a comfortable, ergonomic handle; (2) a stand that is stable in six different orientations; and (3) a storage unit for your USB cable and headphones.
The handle is shaped to maximize the natural curvature of the user's hand. Because it balances the weight of the iPad when placed in the center position, the user can adjust their grip, extend their fingers or simply balance the iPad in their palm. This solution greatly increases the amount of time one can comfortably hold the iPad without having to set it down.
The handle also rotates 360 degrees, allowing adjustment to the perfect viewing orientation. Because your hand is not locked in with a strap, you can easily and safely share or hand off the iPad to others, or simply set it down on a flat surface for viewing or typing.
The handle has a large release button that operates the internal latch system. When moving the handle to a different port, it attaches by simply pressing it into place, giving you an audible click so you know your iPad is secure.
The handle also forms a sturdy base for your iPad when you want to use it as a stand. You can leave the handle in the center position to reduce screen glare and achieve a comfortable viewing angle, which is great when pairing the iPad with a Bluetooth keyboard.
The exterior ports on the sides allow you to place the iPad almost flat for typing or almost vertical for viewing movies, video chatting, or using the iPad to display slide shows.
With a choice of four exterior ports, you decide where the iPad's home button is located.
The end caps on the handle are removable to allow you to store your USB cable and headphones. As a result, these items will always be there when you need them and won't become tangled. You can also store a small power adapter, a stylus, a screen wipe, or other items. You decide.
The engineering is nearly complete and our latest prototype has been in constant use for 5 months. Now that we are satisfied that the design and functionality meet our criteria, we are ready to go to manufacturing. This is the point where we need your help. There are many parts that need to be tooled, stamped or cast. These processes are expensive. If we meet our funding goal our project will become a reality.
Our Kickstarter limited edition version will be limited to 500 units. Each will be serialized and include a certificate of authenticity signed by the founders. Here's what we expect it will look like:
