Hurrah! The $800k Stretch Goal has been achieved!

Posted by Revolution Software (Creator)

Hi all!

We know we've been a bit quiet these last couple of days on the Kickstarter front, but things have been far from quiet here at Revolution. After a small celebration on Saturday and a day of rest on Sunday, we have come back to our HQ with renewed energy and inspiration. Thanks to your generosity, the $800,000 stretch goal has been achieved! A massive thank you to all PayPal and Kickstarter backers. With your tremendous support and helpful feedback, Broken Sword - the Serpent's Curse is going to be a truly amazing game!

I am sure you'd like to know more about the stretch goal, so we grabbed Charles Cecil, the Director, and asked him the following questions.

We've hit the $800,000 Stretch Goal. What does this mean for the game?

The game is going to be much more ambitious than we had originally planned. This requires a fair bit of additional design work - but for great reasons. We have added external locations, with associated puzzles and characters - previously I was worried that the game might feel too claustrophobic. We have also added extra characters so that the game structure becomes more free-form - so players have a genuine choice in how they choose to approach puzzles. These additional characters will, of course include, amongst many others, Pearl and Duane - and a goat or two (please see character sheet below). We will add subtle sub-stories that are resolved throughout the game. And we will ensure that the logic allows you to play the way you want rather than as suits the game designer - to support this we have city maps which will allow you to visit locations in any order. The second part of the game is now going to be considerably expanded to include that section in the Middle East - so we can promise a really exciting, and explosive ending. The additional design work is going to take a few weeks - so we will keep you informed of decisions that we make and ask your advice where appropriate.

We are also creating backer-exclusive forums - again this will take a week or two. In the meantime please do keep an eye on the Broken Sword Facebook page ( - please do 'like' it if you want to receive facebook updates as they are posted.

Many of our backers have asked if the stretch goals will cause a delay. Will we still make the game in time for April 2013?

Our top priority is to deliver all aspects of what we have promised. We are adding considerable amounts of content and will do our best to ensure that this doesn't delay completion. Once we complete the  updated design then we will revise the schedule. Again, we will let you know our conclusions and ask you for your thoughts.

Anything else?

Only to thank everyone, once again, and to say how much we look forward to working with you over the next six month.

Don't mind a release delay if it means getting things right. Adventure gamers are renowned for their patience after all

Great update. Love the ambitious nature of the developments but as others have said, it if requires
more time please don't rush it!

Don't worry if the game is delayed - this definitely seems to become the most awesome Broken Sword!

      Good luck!

Yep. Just another "take your sweet time" comment. Honestly, after waiting so long, we are happy to wait a little longer for a more polished game. Thanks for the update.

I'm new to Broken Sword, and I don't know anything about the Order of the Goat thing. All I know is that I very much approve. <3

    15. Maurice on

I'd rather have the project done right than worry too much about hitting that April 2013 goal.

    16. Andrew Anderson on

Revolution are more obsessed with goats than any of the fans

    17. Martin Mulrooney ⌠⌠ Order of the Goat ⌠⌠ on

This sounds awesome - it's going to be a corker. Charles is smashing it.

    19. Bryan Jue on

I echo the others when I say you should take the time to make the best game possible. Not too much time like Duke Nukem Forever, but like the way Blizzard and Valve don't release games 'til they're done. I am so excited for BS5, and I know your team at Revolution will put lots of love and care into creating it.

    20. Erik Grape ⊂ Orders aplenty on

Please ,as long as you don't go duke nukem forever on us, take the time you need to make it the best possible game that you can make (given the financial constraint).

On a side note I did miss some "puzzles" in the DC version. E.g. that you had to time your "borrowing" of a certain Irish towel instead of, practically, giving the player the items. Not knowing which objects were just "filling" was great.

    21. Julien Samama on

Take your time, but make the best Broken Sword ever. I don't care about delay, I've waited so many years to a new BS (and it's in 2D, I'm so happy with this choice), I can wait a little longer.

    22. Tim Bouwhuis on

      Better late then buggy ;)

      Take the time you need.

    23. Caliebre on

Feel free to express your creativity and have some fun during these months :D

btw Most beautiful goat in the world *_*

    24. Samuel Johnson OOTG on

yeah honestly if there are delays than let there be. we want the best game ever so take all the time you need.

    25. Christian Kiefl on

Yeah, nice update! Please don't release a buggy Game, just because you can't hold April.

Please make this the best Broken Sword game ever.
A point and click master piece in the sweet classic style. (with added posibility of death)
Hoping for a masterfully crafted story with awesome dialogue and twists sprinkled with tasteful puzzles perfectly integrated in the mix.

      Good luck and godspeed.

    27. Remy Monsen on

      Great Update.

In regards to that facebook link, I do hope you will continue to post updates here on kickstarter too though, and not just on facebook. I would hate if you leave all your fans here behind

    28. Amy Worrall on

Six months? I'd have thought it'd take longer than that. I won't be upset if there are delays, as long as we get something awesome out at the other end.

      Abel on

Cool, and according to the release: Just take all the time you need. ;)

    30. Tomimt on

I'm fully okay with expanded schedule due added material. The main thing is to get a (relatively) bug free game, not hastily stitched disaster.

    31. Risto Myyrylainen on

Just make a perfect Broken Sword game:)

    32. Rinu on

"We will add subtle sub-stories that are resolved throughout the game." -- Nice, very nice :3.

And I agree with Poppy Appletree, I don't mind waiting longer for a game if I know it's for sake of its quality not because of some marketing practices ;).

    33. Anders Öster

Seems we are looking forward to something very nice :)

    34. Vladimír Nekvasil - Order of the Goat on

Thank you for this great update! :) You mentioned Middle East, what about promised Africa? :)

    35. Denis H - Order Of The Goat $7.77 on

Great update, just take your time guys and deliver the best BS :) I love the subplots idea and giving the user a more "free" feeling of wandering in locations and not following a strict line, I think Quaramonte was a nice example of it, it wasn't obvious and following one line. Best of luck!

    36. Pal Fulop Mozes on

Don't rush the game, I can wait. :)

    37. Julie Robbins - Order of the Goat on

Looking Forward to it!! Thanks for the update!

    38. Poppy Appletree on

Take all the time you need, quality is what I'm looking for. :)
