Support the Relaunch of Science for the People and the Return of Radical Science

Since 2015, Science for the People has been organizing to revive a movement for science in service of people, not profit, that dates back to 1969. In 2018, Science for the People magazine published our first issue in almost thirty years, a special collection on the consequences of geoengineering, the massive technical projects which propose to fundamentally alter our biosphere in response to climate change.

In 2019, we want to continue to bring even more radical science to the people — in the lab, in the classroom, and in the streets. By radical — from the Latin for roots — we mean examining the root of assumptions and power structures in all areas, so that our future need not be dictated by our past or present. Help us put out three issues of Science for the People in 2019, including our upcoming relaunch issue on “The Return of Radical Science” and keep building our movement to make sure science in the 21st century serves the people, not corporate or military interests.

Why you should contribute

Science for the People magazine, in the tradition of the publication of the same name that arose from the anti-war movement in 1969, will be full of radical analyses of science in the world, taking on everything from the militarization and privatization of science to the need for a just climate solution for everyone.

  • If you want to challenge price gouging and profiteering for life-saving medicine, Science for the People is for you.
  • If you want deep analysis of how to tackle greenhouse gas emissions without providing cover to the same companies that profit off our global addiction to fossil fuels, Science for the People is for you.
  • If you want thoughtful reports on the fights for labor rights in scientific labs, Science for the People is for you.
  • If you want to join a growing movement ensuring that science is free of oppression in all forms, Science for the People is for you.
  • Science for the People believes that humanity’s bounty of scientific knowledge should be for all people, and for the furthering of social and environmental justice. We believe that military and corporate influences have a corrupting and undemocratic influence on science, and we believe that scientists must organize to overcome the racism, sexism, classism, and colonialism that often suffuses the history of their fields. We believe that a radically democratic science can and must meet the environmental and social challenges of the 21st century—and we want to build the movement to make that happen.

Why we’re raising money

We want to produce an attractive magazine that will carry our message of radical science to as many people as possible, and build a movement for radical science in North America and around the world.

If we meet our goal of raising $20,000, we will produce three new issues of Science for the People in 2019: a Spring relaunch issue on the theme of “The Return of Radical Science” followed by Summer and Fall issues, themes to be determined. All content will be made available and free to the public at magazine.scienceforthepeople.org. Early web access and printable PDFs of select content from these issues will be available to all who contribute at least $25 to this campaign. All who contribute at least $90 will receive a bound print copy of the relaunch and geoengineering issues of the revived Science for the People

And, if we meet our stretch goal of $30,000, then we will print all three of the forthcoming issues for physical circulation. If such a run proves viable and we attract enough of a subscription base and interest from brick and mortar stores, we will keep Science for the People in print for the foreseeable future.

How we’ll spend the money

In order to kick-start such an ambitious publishing project, and to reflect the priorities and commitments of Science for the People members and supporters, the money raised will go toward the following:

  • Payment for feature content and design. Exact rates to be determined and donated content will always be accepted but SftP is committed to paying authors, artists, designers and programmers for their work.
  • A summer retreat for Science for the People leaders. With more than a dozen chapters organizing across North America, we spend a lot of time on conference calls. An intensive weekend-long, in-person gathering of Science for the People will generate content for and inform decisions about the upcoming magazine issues.
  • The establishment of a Science for the People Fellowship program. SftP Fellows are responsible for performing original and creative research at the intersection of science and social justice. The results of that research will be reflected regularly in issues of the magazine.
  • Resources for SftP members to generate original content. Whether it’s a travel grant to go cover a climate summit or a panel on STEM labor to be filmed and transcribed or research into who promotes the latest theories biological determinism, important research or events and short term projects that deserve to be reflected in the magazine will be resourced toward that goal.

These are the funding priorities we anticipate for reviving the publication Science for the People. Additional costs include web hosting, miscellaneous software, and small overhead expenses associated with production and organizing the many aspects of magazine production.

Risks and challenges

We're publishing a magazine either way but we want to make it sustainable by paying our writers and artists. We also want to support the organization in growing politically, together, with a retreat at the famed Highlander Center this summer.
