These are grim times: even war has evolved under the rumbling uproar of steam progress!

Everything starts from a dream I had almost a year ago: some of the characters were actively involved in an adventure. They were looking for something or someone inside a palace and while they were fighting guards and investigating into some sort of dungeon, just a couple of rooms away there was an opulent celebration with gold, wine, costumes, music, laughter, seduction, ivory, luxury food. The protagonists of my dream were so vivid and refined that I almost had the feeling I was watching a movie someone else realized before, rather than a dream. I woke up with their faces in my mind, all their class features and what I can define as the "savor" of the ambient, of that pulsating society. The taste of gallantry and a different reality in which the rumbling motor engine puffs for progress. 

Venture in an entirely new world through the pages of a finely embellished tome!
A hard work by multiple artists on storyboards and Protagonists' appearance, always pays back with astounding results...

...A year has passed since that morning. I remember spending the vast majority of that day writing down on my cellphone (I was on vacation and I didn't have a laptop with me), obsessed by the risk of losing everything the ephemeral way it came to me. Since then, new character classes were born , together with a complex, fascinating yet lethal world... 


The Host (a playable Protagonist) lives a connection with a lost one that still haunts him: Res Obscura is a story of War and Strong Feelings, some of which overcome Death...

I have been playing pen and paper role-playing-games since I was 11 y/o -too bad for me :-( I'm 43 now- and I wanted the engine to keep all the classical feeling of role-playing with a more agile and free rules system. The game has been thoroughly tested by different groups of players over hours and hours of table game. I wanted something a player could learn in 10 minutes, starting from zero. From the very moment in which he sat at my table. A rule system that would take little time for character sheets and preparation, leaving more time for adventuring and fun. 

The city of C.O.G. among the other cities in Res Obscura perfectly embodies the concept behind the "humanity rebuilt": a pulsating metal heart where automata work at steam engines. Humans? A tolerable contraption!

A world wearily trying to perk itself up from chaos and struggles 

As I said, the setting design has been somewhat shifting throught these months. Elements of occult and magic are deeply interwoven with the Protagonists and the general mood. 


A glimpse into an alternative world where humanity had to invent a new society and a rebuilt etiquette...

I've been inspired by my two passions: role-playing of course, and literature: 

  •  The Difference Engine (Gibson - Sterling)
  •  His Dark Materials trilogy (Pullman)
  •  The Eymerich Cycle (Evangelisti)

While there is a general flavor that may be traced back to "The Chaos Engine", a mytological Amiga shoot'em up, and more recently to "The Order", a PS4 videogame. 

Concerning movies, among the incredible number of works belonging to the steampunk genre, I've drawn inspiration from: 

  • "The league of extraordinary gentlemen", a Stephen Norrington movie of 2003.
  • "Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows", 2011, Guy Ritchie.
  • "Sucker Punch", 2011, Zack Snyder. 

While if we consider Anime, a vital inspirational contribution has been given by "Violet Evergarden" (Kana Akatsuki), for its marvellous landscapes and the overall atmosphere of a metropolis slowly coming back to life after a long and brutal war. 

The New East India Company is one of the Three Nations at War: most of the adventures will take place into its territories

Three nations at war!

Narrated events take place in 2560 AD, after the appearance of the so-called EMPers, individuals capable of interacting and cracking electronic devices. Society as we know collapsed in war and destruction. What emerges from the ashes, is a rebuilt mankind: looking at past for culture, literature, art and etiquette, while reinventing technology on the absence of electricity and information technology. Cities scatter across the earth in search for raw materials and exploiting natural resources, while nations reorganize themselves on the only portion of our planet surviving the nuclear fallout. 

The Nation of Genitrix is a smaller enclave into the territories of the East India Company: based on the concept of an ever-seeing Nation, always protecting and caring, Genitrix is ruled by the Crimson Parliament.

A delicate balance, encompassing the nomadic Hyena Warriors, the New East India Company with its explorers, the Syndicate and its railroads, and the Hydra "nowhere cities" probing the oceans floor in search for methane hydrate... 

The LebenWerkZeug (AKA "the Reich") is actually an Empire. The Cardoon on its flag stands for the free will to colonize and prevail. Its war with the New East India Company and Genitrix is mainly against the idea of a tyrannical state. But is it true that freedom thrives under this flag?
and tons of outlandish equipment and weapons too!

Put into the foreground, the Protagonists: gifted (or cursed) with the Graces, lifechanging divine yet obscure features, they either fail to survive or take over the world... 

Did I fail to mention that there are TONS of weapons and equipments waiting for your Protagonist?

Meet the Protagonists!

Remember: the Protagonists are no angels!

The ten Protagonists' classes are the pulsating heart of ResObscura. The game setting itself has been developed around the characters as they represent ten different ways to survive a life-changing event symbolized by the Cataclysm. 

Each of the Protagonist developed a Supernatural Power, called "the Grace", that both works as a tremendously powerful tool and as a curse to them. You will have to interpret this duality as the manual goes in depth on the social implications derived by being a Protagonist... Or you can just enjoy adventuring!

The Collector (one of the Ten Protagonists) sees her body as a canvas: you too will have to evolve and enlighten yourself in order to survive

Giuseppe Di Fidio: graduated in Milan Scuola del Fumetto. Experiences with Warner Bros and Piemme Editions for "Geronimo Stilton". Chief editor for a puzzles printing. 

Toni Cittadini: worked for DaVinci Games for the games "High Noon" (a Bang! Expansion), "Palatinus" and "Mister Bill". Art Director for Methyrfall RPG (Raven Distribution). Dragonero for the Wyrd Editions. Lead Author for the graphic novels "Ted Bundy", "Cannibal Family". As a Game Designer he realized "Attention Game Pirates", "Il grande gioco del vino", "Milioni - ha fiuto per gli affari" (Lisciani Giochi). He collaborates with Capponi Editore for "Caput Gentis" (lead author) and "Mistero al Museo". 

Isabella Ragazzi: graduated in International Comics School in Turin. Authored "L'Uomo Storto", a comic story for McGuffin Comics. 

Claudia Minutillo: graduated at the Redhouse Lab School of Comics. Freelance. 

Sara Virginia Ceccarelli: self-taught illustrator, graduated in Accademia di Belle Arti (painting).

An Italian edition of the rules is available upon request.

Facebook page, the internet site, and dedicated email will be there to help should any problem with shipping issue.
Please note shipping cost is NOT included and will be added (while for all the PDF content, no shipping will be charged, but a valid email address is required).
A dedicated internet site will explain further improvements in game mechanics and setting, and a FAQ will be implemented.
A "companion manual" is on preparation and will be available via the internet site, as well as further purchase and download of game manuals and accessories.
As stated above, we are building our own adventure as game designers and thus we take advantage of professional pressmen and shippers. Nevertheless, there is always the possibility that something goes wrong! We will be promptly available should any problem get in the way to your adventure in our steampunk world!
