The House of the Rising Spade is a place built for your imagination: an esoteric realm full of mysteries built for cartomancers, cardists, magicians, collectors, dreamers, and card enthusiasts.
Be ready to meet the residents and visit their mansion. The main gate will be open for 30 days and you are welcome to visit and pledge for your favorite items.
This Kickstarter campaign aims to produce 3 decks:
- Cartomancer has a tarot feeling. The aces have a magick sigil, the borders of the 54 faces are in gold. Cartomancer will be printed by Cartamundi with B9 true linen finish and cold-foil on both sides of the cards. Full-bleed black back design and gold cold-foiled graphic elements.
- Faro gets closer to the old poker decks from 1800's. No index at all, one-way design for all the cards. Play cards as they used to do in 1800's with a modern and an esoteric touch. Faro will be printed by USPCC on their classic linen finish.
- The Gatekeeper variant is a limited edition that will have the the same cards as Cartomancer, its own tuckbox, a commemorative card with number and signature, and a miniature of the gate in painted resin. Through the cutout on the tuck-box you can see the gate, and through the opening of the gate can you see the number.
The miniature of the gate will be produced by Zealot Miniatures in UK. The master will be even more detailed than the prototype and printed with extreme precision: +/-37μmXY accuracy and 35μmZ layers.
35μm = 0.035mm (0.0014in)
2 Faro, 2 Cartomancer, 1 Gatekeeper, 1 Carat Case with laser-engraved graphics on the lid.
Cartomancer will have golden cold-foil on both sides. Cold foil printing, also known as cold foil stamping, is a modern method of printing metallic foil on a substrate in order to enhance the aesthetic of the final product.
Down here the 3D animation of a giant fan with Cartomancer variant. 3D and rendering made by Nicolas Molines.
Faro variant will have golden metallic ink on the back design, and a few graphic elements of the faces will be printed with this ink.
The cards have no standard index, especially the spot cards (2 to 10) that are without number. This is a choice that comes from the idea of being able to play as people used to play in 1800's. I took inspiration from Thomas Crehore (1820) and the Squared Faro deck by Russell and Morgan 1887-1900.
PLEASE NOTICE: The prototype shown here has one-way spot cards. However, it is going to be changed and make them two-ways. I tested the prototype and for some reason the cards with the classic layout and one-way pips are quite annoying. There is the chance that my Faro will mimic it's grand-grandfather.
GREAT NEWS! The tuckboxes will be produced by Oath Playing Cards. This time I chose to cooperate with Oath to achieve deep embossing and high quality hot-foil details and registration. If you own one of Lotrek's decks, you know already how the outcome will be :)
Custom Brick Box
All the backers with a "brick" in their reward, will get the custom brick box FOR FREE. 2 bricks, 2 brick boxes, etc
A brick box holds 12 decks.
Black paper with black and gold foil. Printed by Oath Playing Cards.
Coin / Card Guard
The coin will be produced by CoinsForAnything in the US, and it is 2x2inch (about 5x5cm) in metal with antique silver finish. 3D graphics on the front, 2D recessed metal on the back.
It is the Ace of Spades with the keyhole as cutout.
0.68x0.75in (1.7x2cm), +85 SEK as add-on
This little beauty will have a cutout in the keyhole and a ring on top. It works as pendant but it can work as keychain as well. It depends how you use it.
0.68x0.75in (1.7x2cm) for casual and elegant outfit :)
+55 SEK as add-on

A huge thank you to The Gentleman Wake for his amazing deck preview and for allowing me to use parts of the footage to make the kickstarter presentation video.
Make sure you subscribe to his Youtube channel, his deck reviews are great.
Risks and challenges
The decks will be printed by 2 different manufacturers:
Cartomancer variant will be printed by Cartamundi, Belgium.
Faro will be printed by USPCC, USA.
Tuckboxes will be produced by Oath Playing Cards in Greece.
All the packages will be shipped by Gamblers Fulfillment, Texas USA.
The estimated delivery date is just that, an estimate. it depends on the factories and their workload. I will send the final files at the conclusion of the campaign, but I cannot speed up the production. There is a possibility of earlier delivery, but it all depends on how quickly the manufacturers complete the production, once I approve all the printing proofs.
Printing a deck of playing cards is a standard procedure, but errors may occur, you never know, the devil is in the details. This is my 7th kickstarter project and I do not foresee any issues. I'll keep my eyes open and follow every single step of the project to make it real, as I did for all my other decks.
Be aware that the colors on the screen will not perfectly match with the colors on printed paper. Many pictures are rendering, so the final result might be slightly different. Graphics may improve or change slightly in the final printed version.
