Introducing Reparations Media & Apparel.
RMA is a black-inspired movement and streetwear brand based in Minneapolis designed to spark a conversation, provoke racial reintegration, and inspire socialist change.
Rooted in blackness but not defined by it, our designs lay bare the absurdity of black-white inequality in America with all deliberate speed.
Who We Are
@theotherbayard: My name is Noel Gordon Jr, and I am an accomplished civil rights activist and afro-socialist entrepreneur based in Minneapolis with more than 10 years of experience running high-performing teams and organizations. I'm the Chief Executive Officer.
@rybread264: My name is Ryan O'Leary. Originally from Boston and a proud graduate of American University, I am a self-taught creative professional with over a decade of political campaigns and digital communications experience. I'm the Chief Creative Officer.
What We're About
On June 28, 2018, Ryan and I incorporated the Race Company / Race Company Productions as a minority media & edutainment brand production company that does well by doing good for black people.
Our social mission is to co-create a mass movement for racial justice in America by producing morally courageous brands for ourselves and other people - starting with RMA.
Much like Kickstarter, we're a general benefit corporation, which means we've legally obligated ourselves to put people over profits by having a core business purpose that goes beyond maximizing shareholder value.
To keep us accountable, Ryan and I have spelled out a list of 6 specific values and commitments we plan to live and lead by:
- Design for black people, the rest will follow.
- Expertise comes from everywhere.
- Excellence, always.
- Act with urgency.
- No one is disposable.
- Democracy works in the workplace.
$30K in 30 Days
Ryan and I have self-invested over $11,000 of our own cash since we first began working together on this project in April 2018.
Now we're in need of an additional $30,000 to:
1) produce our first design collection entitled 'Everyday, Integration'
2) cover 5 months of operating costs through January 31, 2018, including an estimated $18,000 in living wages for our team of independent business and creative design contractors.
Risks and challenges
We've come a long way in a short period of time, but our biggest challenge has been securing start-up and working capital from traditional banks and lenders - many of whom seem skeptical of our commitment to put people over profits.
Ryan and I are confident in the team of people we have assembled around us, which includes several pro bono volunteers, advisors, and industry consultants, like the Southern Queer Creative Group, a queer-owned creative consulting firm in TN.
We are especially grateful to our close friends, families, and loved ones for their patience, perspective, and support over the last few months!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
