Where'd it all Start?

Not long ago I decided to invest a little spare cash in a Kickstarter campaign for a cool 2d game animation tool. As a reward for my contribution I received a portfolio review & advice from Michael Parent, a seasoned pro game artist and the co-creator of the tool. Michael liked my work & gave me a simple platformer game engine he'd made using the great game authoring program called Construct2. He showed me how to replace the art & change levels around. With it I created a fun little game for my online portfolio. 

What started off as a practice project evolved into a really fun game that deserved to be realized. Michael thought it was a fantastic idea too. I'd use my talent with graphics to produce the environment art & Michael would use his programming & animation skills to make the game move. Michael Parent thought it was a fantastic idea. He even got me in touch with other talent who will also contribute to the game... Including Mark Falcon, lead singer of Shotgun Alley, who's creating an awesome original soundtrack for us!

After seeing what we've accomplished so far several of Michael Parent's professional game making friends have also offered to join in the fun and pitch in some art, level design, additional programming and QA testing. With our team assembled we'd like to turn this into a professional project. Our goal is to get funding for a 4 month development cycle so we can focus full time efforts to making Hyper Segtendio Siblings as awesome as possible within a relatively short time. But it's not just about making the game. "Making of" videos will be made to give people an inside peak into the game design process, art design, and even showing how to program some game features in Construct 2!

What is Hyper Segtendio Siblings? 

Being a 90's kid, I grew up on classic side-scrolling platformers like Super Mario All-Stars, Donkey Kong Country1-3, Kirby Super Star, & many more. 2D side-scroller games have always been my favorite, so I decided to make something of a homage to them with my game.

Aiden & Traci Segtendio, a pair of siblings in the Ningendosis star system had always lived an uneventful life. Envious of other game characters, they constantly wished to have a grand adventure of their own. Well, be careful what you wish for! One night, while their parents were out fighting baddies, Aiden & Traci were left with the task of keeping watch over the Gem of Life. A legendary gem which grants the power to restart a game, or end the story completely, it is sought after by many monsters. They come for the gem late at night, when Aiden & Traci have accidentally fallen asleep! Now the two siblings must work together to retrieve the gem, before the minions that stole it return it to their master, & he ends everyone's game!

Game Play

Here's some gameplay footage! Keep in mind, this is only the beginning, we will be improving & adding a lot to this after funding. 

Hyper Segtendio Siblings will look like a classic, old-school side-scroller, but with a slightly higher resolution than classic console games & will feature an awesome, high quality sound track by rock musician Mark Falcon. The game will be simple enough to be enjoyed by casual gamers who might never have played a platformer before, but with enough twists to the classic platformer game-play to keep things interesting for veteran gamers. For example the player can swap between siblings at any point during the game to take advantage of that siblings strengths & special abilities & let the other sibling regain health! 

Hyper Segtendio Siblings will be available on Windows, Mac, & Linux operating systems as a browser based game and eventually as natively running apps. The 4 month development cycle that we are planning will include perfecting all the art, pow-er-ups & boss-battles, development of multiple levels in various, lush environments, & even some bonus levels with unique gameplay elements. However, we plan to keep producing environments, levels, & expanding on the game play, releasing upgrades to the basic game over time. Interested in making games yourself?

Michael Parent will be using this opportunity to continue to record more art tutorial videos, giving aspiring artists a look into actual game development and art iteration. You can see Michael's previous tutorial videos here

Michael has already released the basic platformer engine he had given me, free for anyone to learn from, alter and make their own games with. You can see more about that here

Once the game is finished Mike will be making all of the game's character & effect animations available as a game animation art pack for use with the game animation tool he co-created. I will also be releasing all of the environment art as a companion art pack. Together, these two art packages will be an extremely cost-effective (and easy to customize) way for indie game developers to make great looking games of their own.

How Will Funding be Used? 

Funding will allow me and my team to focus our time & efforts on making Hyper Segtendio Siblings as awesome as possible. However, some of the funds will be used to create an online forum for Hyper Segtendio Siblings, & on production costs for merchandise promised as rewards.

Basically, funding will allow us to get as much as possible out of our 4 month development cycle. It would provide me with an invaluable learning experience, as well as help me produce my very first published game!

Beyond Our Funding Goal 

There are many possibilities for expansion on the original game concept, including but not limited to:
-Expanding our game's accessibility, making it available for Android & IOS.
-Developing a web store and game options which would allow different outfits for the Segtendio Siblings to wear during game play.
-Using said web store to release other upgrades to the game such as story expansions, new environments, special bosses, etc.. 

Who Are We? 

I'm is a freelance artist with five years of graphic design experience & a bachelor degree in Media Arts and Animation. I also interned for Flying Lab Software & have published concept art & 3D models in their title, "Bakugan Dimensions." It is my ultimate goal to start a successful game studio composed of all the unemployed, but vastly talented artists I know. Eventually I would also like to teach the art of game production to the next generation of creative minds. However, my main focus will be creating games that will enrich the lives of players by instilling a sense of positive morals & healthy mindsets.

Michael Parent is an 8-year veteran of the game industry, having spent most of that time as lead or senior artist in studios such as Gameloft NY, Glu mobile, & then working full time freelance for studios such as Wayforward, creating character animations for games such as Thor: God of Thunder for the Nintendo DS. Michael also recently programmed the IOS game "The World of Mr. Toast" with Mr. Toast creator Dan Goodsell, which is now available on iTunes. Michael's also spent many years as an art instructor for both children & adults, guest teaching in design courses at a local college. He loves to teach & has already begun a series of videos freely available on Youtube which are a valuable source of information & training for aspiring illustrators & game artists. Michael is also the co-founder of BrashMonkey.com and the co-creator of Spriter, a previous successful Kickstarter campaign and a still in development tool for creating animated sprites for video games.

Mark Falcon is a musician from Australia, based in California. He sings and writes songs in his band Shotgun Alley and he has a side project called Falcon Road. Mark has been making music almost as long as he's been playing video games and he still has his SNES set up at his parents house for a bit of old school gaming when he heads home. Turtles In Time still beats Call Of Duty in his book! These days Mark has a bit of a love hate relationship with games, only for the fact that they distract him from making music and visa versa... Mark's forte is Rock n Roll, it all started with AC/DC and he loves everything from Backstreet Boys to Slayer. As well as singing, Mark can play the Guitar, Bass and Drums. Mark has spent a lot of time touring with his band, but certainly not enough!
