My name is Renee Kurilla and I am a children's illustrator in Boston, MA. I am a lead artist at an animation studio called FableVision. A few years ago, each person on our art team was given a Strathmore Field sketchbook to carry around and doodle or take notes in...
I took such a liking to this sketchbook that I quickly filled one, then two, then five... and fast forward to the present time - I'm sitting on twelve sketchbooks filled with characters and ideas.
Time passed so quickly since that first sketch that I'd lost track of all the work I'd done...
A few months ago, a trip to NYC to meet with publishers had me thinking of different and unique ways to make an impression. Sure, I had my portfolio, but I needed something else. I ended up weeding through all of my forgotten sketchbooks. I neatly tore out my favorite drawings, laid them out on the floor and organized them into a portfolio book.
Still not satisfied, I took each page and scanned it. I arranged my images into book form and home-printed about 25 copies to bring with my to NYC to leave behind with editors and art directors.
Months have passed since then, and I have continued to fill up sketchbooks.
More of my sketches are available on my website.
I want to be able to make more compilations similar to the books I left behind in NYC, but I simply do not have the means to mass produce all of them myself again (without going BONKERS!) I thought it might be really cool if I could share the books I make with you...because what good do they do sitting around in a box in my house anyway!?
So, thank you for visiting this page, reading this far, and considering a purchase of one of my sketchbooks. I really appreciate it, and I hope this is the first of many compilations to come!
- 52 page perfect bound booklet
- full color cover / b&w interior, with color pages mixed in!
- Size: 6.625" x 10.25" (standard comic size)
- Paper: 100lb. Silk Matte
I'm trying to keep it simple with just four tiers available. For reference, here is a photo of what my home-printed books look like. I'm fixing to make the new books way BETTER with beautiful, high quality paper and even more sketches.
*I will redesign the cover with a brand new watercolor illustration (TBD!)
A flippin' fun $50 tier:
Please choose between one of the following images (A,B,C,D,or E) I will mail you a copy of my sketchbook AND a high quality, archival, signed 8.5"x11" print!
(*My name will not appear on the print as it does in the images!)
A super special $100 tier:
If you are able to contribute $100 to this campaign, I will paint you a 7'x7' dot like this one:
I will also customize it (reasonably) to however you like. Meaning, if you'd rather the girl be a boy and the cat be a dog- I'll do it! If you want the cat to be a black with white paws...you got it! (and so on!)
That's it... It's a pretty simple endeavor! I'm looking forward to seeing the results and sharing them with YOU!
Risks and challenges
Most of the art and design layout for the sketchbook is already completed, I can only see potential delays when it comes time to print because I want to make sure everyone receives the best book possible!
If there are any delays, I will make sure to keep everyone posted on the progress!
