Gender Euphoria: A New Collection!
This book is a zine-style collection of poetry, prose, and art by non-binary & transgender creators about the joy and beauty of gender euphoria (the wonderful opposite of gender dysphoria). If the goal is reached, the project seeks to print an initial run of 200 black & white books with a full-color cover. All contributors will be paid for their work.
Inspired by the resilience of transgender youth, this collection was created with the belief that joy is resistance. With this collection, fifteen contributors are joyfully expanding a meaningful, and textured canon of what it means to be transgender & non-binary in 2018. Sharing our moments of triumph, beauty, and euphoria is a powerful way to dictate our own stories as full human beings, capable of immense joy. Gender Euphoria seeks to heal & open new conversations.

"I was inspired to create this collection after spending summers as an overnight camp counselor. Each year, the number of transgender youth attending camp would increase. Wanting to be a good role model, I struggled to give meaningful resources and meet the needs of my campers. But I found it difficult to provide media that demonstrated not just the hardships but also the beauty and joy found in being non-binary and transgender. I wanted these fantastic trans youth to know that being QT isn't just pain. It's full of a unique kind of joy, those spectacular and wonderful moments that I call 'Gender Euphoria'." -- Rena Yehuda
Stretch Goal: $2200
It would be wonderful to have the extra funds to create more gender euphoria swag, including more stickers and buttons, as well as the funds to ship these books for distribution at bookstores across the United States.
About the Process
The editor and organizer of this project is Rena Yehuda Newman (they/them), a 19-year-old Jewish, non-binary artist and writer from Evanston, Illinois, attending school in Madison, Wisconsin. Submissions opened in late August for 2017 and closed at the end of October 2017. Since then, Rena Yehuda has been working to select works, coordinate with contributors of many backgrounds from many places, and compile the works into a print format document. They will be working diligently to raise the kickstarter goal of $1900
necessary to pay contributors and do an initial print run of 200 books.
During this time, Rena Yehuda will work to finish compiling the final file. If the goal is reached, the compilation will be sent to print. They hope to have the final copies ready for distribution by June 2018.
Rena Yehuda is hoping to distribute the books at zine fests, bookstores, online, and donate a portion of the proceeds to a transgender advocacy group or charity.
Breakdown of Costs:
- $800 will be used to pay contributors for their work
- $700 will cover the costs of printing and shipping the books
- $150+ will cover the costs of printing extras like stickers, etc.
- $100 will cover the costs of extra shipping
Many people have helped Rena Yehuda in getting Gender Euphoria to the Kickstarter phase! They'd like to thank the following people and organizations for their constant technical, emotional, and spiritual support:
The ArtWrite Collective (Facebook)
Thank you to Leor Miller for the fantastic soundtrack to this kickstarter video, "98 Seconds"! You can check out her fantastic bandcamp here.
Risks and challenges
This project is still currently in the process of being compiled into its final printing format. Though Rena Yehuda has self-published smaller works in the past, this is the first project of this size and scale they've taken on. As a young person, they're excited and nervous. Once this process of compilation finished and if the goal is reached, they hope to publish an initial run of 200 books.
While many of the larger contributor goals are promised hard copies, the expected date of shipping is tentative, as complications with printing and timing of individual shipping may arise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
