Realistic pre-painted modular buildings & accessories in 28mm scale. Accessible and detailed interiors with 1" etched grid on floors.

PLEASE NOTE: Since our project has gained far more support than we originally asked, it is likely that delivery dates for people who pledge after we reached the $20,000 mark will slip into February 2013.   We hope that funding will surpass $50,000 and we'll be able to buy two or more laser cutters to pull the schedule back to January - but we can't promise that at this stage.

New! Thanks to our new re-design walls don't have to be glued to floors anymore, so they take up less space to store.  Buildings still look the same and those that want to glue the walls to floors can.  We give you the option now.

The goal of this project is to kick start our "Medieval Village" effort.  Sure, these models buildings look good, but they are also highly functional.  Built for 28mm gamers, these are modular units - so you can pull them apart and reassemble them into different buildings.  You can remove the roof to see inside the upper floor, remove the upper floor to see the ground floor.  Once we're fully in business, we'll sell individual modules and expansion packs - but to fit the Kickstarter format, we have put together a set of typical buildings that show off our system well and offer a solid starting point for those who intend to amass a larger collection.  We're also aware that a village is a lot more than just buildings - so we're gradually creating a strong line of accessories: Carts and wagons, well, fencing, horse-trough, pillory, gallows, ducking stool and anything else you might find in a typical village.

Our "flagship" model is our large tavern "The Well Oiled Scabbard".  This is a gigantic building on two floors - lift the upper floor off and put it to one side and you have the perfect venue for Tavern Brawl gaming. The interior room layout is completely flexible.  For more pictures and other product information check out our website at http://RenaissanceMiniatures.com

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Steve and Renee have considerable experience with "flexible manufacturing" - laser cutting, 3D printing, CNC milling, etc. Steve has been a gamer since Dungeons & Dragons was pronounced "Chainmail" and works in computer games as a 3D graphics programmer. Renee has experience with interior design and management and has started a small business making custom dollhouses. As you can see, all of our first product is already designed and we have made multiple successful prototypes using the same technology we'll use for manufacturing.

We have carefully set up our prices to include roughly 65% for equipment leasing, 20% for shipping, 10% for Kickstarter/Amazon's fees and 5% for paint, materials, electricity and so forth.

At our goal level, we would be able to fund the purchase our own laser cutter but would have to work for about a month for nothing. That's OK because we are passionate about building a business and our labor would (in effect) be earning us the tools we need. But with our own laser cutter, we can find things to keep it busy and we'll have a great part-time business going forward. If we go well over $13,000 - when this probably becomes a full-time job and the business should take off.

Should things go crazy then at around $40,000 we'd need to consider leasing office space and getting a second laser cutter - twice the capacity, but twice the amount of product - so we're back to working for nothing for a month - but after that we have a spectacular capability to mass produce for the gamer market. If things go wildly crazy, then for every $50,000 or so we need another machine and for every four machines we need to employ someone to keep them fed. However, a $10/hour employee can easily keep four machines fed - so this is sustainable and scales well.

Our schedule for delivery (Jan 2013) is worst-case. We'll need time to get our equipment set up and we have kept at least 6 weeks in the schedule to allow for problems.

If anyone would like to see more details of the way we arrived at these numbers, shoot us an email.

FAQ

  • Short answer: Sorry, no.

For the large kits: The problem with shipping is that they are made entirely of plywood...which is really heavy.

When it's packed up for shipping, the small village kit (for example) weighs as much as a 9"x6"x6" solid lump of wood! For such small - but heavy - packages, shipping costs are more or less just a matter of weight. Size and number of packages doesn't matter much. Since the boxes we pack the stuff in weighs almost nothing compared to the product itself - the total weight is the same. We save no more than pennies by combining two rewards into one.

For the small kits: The problem is that shipping almost any box costs a lot more than a flat packed envelope - and shipping costs can easily be more than the cost of the product itself. To get the cost down, we actually had to design the product to fit into the envelope we use to ship it in! Combining two or more items into an envelope doesn't work because the envelope becomes too thick to pass the US postal service's rules. Putting two or three of them into the smallest "Flat Rate" box is possible, but usually more expensive than shipping them individually in envelopes.

The other problem is that physically picking out the parts for shipping and deciding which box/envelope to use is a labor-intensive process and if we make a mistake and use a box that's too big - or use a box when two envelopes would have been cheaper - or worse-still, miss out an accessory and have to make up the order with a separate post - then that would hit our bottom-line horribly. So standardizing on the way we ship small items is necessary just so that we can "productionize" the process.

However, we are acutely aware of the problem here. The way we try to help you guys with shipping is to make "packs" - the vehicle, street and justice packs, for example - are designed to be cheap to ship. The vehicle pack fits into a regular business envelope and the other two into larger padded bags. We can carefully pick the set of parts that fit into a particular size/weight shipping container. The amount of "stuff" that is in (for example) the small village pack is carefully adjusted to fit in a particular size of box.

  • Yes! Pick the highest valued reward out of the things that you want. Make a pledge for that - but increase the amount you choose to pay to cover the cost of *ALL* of the items you want. Then you'll tell us which items you wanted when we survey you at the end of the Kickstarter project...that's when we pick up your postal address and such like. If you want to combine with one of the high priced items with a restricted quantity, be sure to pick the restricted item as the one you pledge for so that the quantity remaining gets properly accounted for.

  • Yes, we do international shipping. For the lower pledge levels, you'll need to pledge a little higher than the normal price (it says how much in the item description). For the higher priced items, we've added specific rewards that include international shipping at a higher cost that covers everything. Sadly, international shipping is expensive for our higher items - we use wooden construction and wood is heavy!

  • We have big plans for the future - but for this kickstarter, we have to focus on the village set until we meet our goals. We'll be describing "stretch goals" in future updates so that if our funding goes over 100%, there will be new reward levels opening up. If you have ideas, things you'd like to see us make, please feel free to post them to the comments section - or email us directly at mail@renaissanceminiatures.com

  • First let me say that from the moment we take delivery of "The Death Ray of Ming the Merciless" (our laser cutter) in late December - until it cuts out the very last pony cart - we'll be concentrating fully on completing our reward commitments to pledgers.

Use of the machine as an actual death ray to take over the world will have to wait.

But as we finish making and shipping the last of your rewards, we'll be looking to create an online store where you'll be able to buy things like expansion packs and individual modules and accessories that are currently only available in packs. There will likely be a hundred or more separate modules and accessories - and also various bulk packs.

The kickstarter "reward" system is not good at handling these kinds of sales - but it does allow us to price things more cheaply because we get our money up-front and can plan production for hundreds of customers in one go with simplified packing and shipping that comes from selling fixed bundles.

We're also talking to retailers - nothing is certain but we hope that one day you'll find our products in your local gamer store. It's likely that they'll sell kits and packs similar to those you see here on Kickstarter - but I doubt they'll want to carry that huge range of expansion packs and such...which is where our online store will come in to play. Retailers can probably sell things cheaper than we can because they don't have to pay shipping, they get better rates from the credit card companies and they can take cash and checks.

We plan to bring out more product lines in the future - we've discussed several of them in detail in the comments section and in even more detail on our own forum system at http://RenaissanceMiniatures.com.

Kickstarters are fun for customers and us alike - and they let us get a feel for the things you want and how you want them bundled in ways that any marketting manager would kill to find out. Our current plan is to launch a new product line via Kickstarter roughly every four months. That introduces the product and (crucially) pays for the initial production ramp-up. Once each kickstarter is done, we'll move over to selling them online and (possibly) in retail outlets.

  • Short answer: No. We do make a table-and-benches set - but that's about it.

The problem is that we're using a laser cutter to manufacture our products and that limits us to sheet material - things like thin plywood, cardboard, cloth and acrylic plastics. We can't cut metal at all.

Plywood is our material-of-choice because it's "green", it's fairly inexpensive, it's stronger than normal wood or MDF, it laser-cuts better than MDF, it's easy to paint - and the natural grain of wooden items adds texture that makes things look more real. Our thinnest plywood is 3.5mm thick.

The problem is that our chosen scale is 1" = 5 feet, or roughly 5mm = 1 foot. What gamers call "28mm scale". At that scale, 3.5mm plywood is roughly eight and a half inches thick!

So to make wooden furniture, we'd be like carpenters who were forced to make everything out of eight inch thick planks!

There is very little furniture that would look convincing when made that way!

What is really needed is either injection molding or cast metal techniques - and that's simply not something we are currently able to handle.

I strongly encourage gamers who want to see 28mm scale furniture to approach the companies that produce figurines. Those guys have the technology to make wonderful 28mm scale furniture - and we'd love to see them do it to complement our building systems.

So if (for example) you want 20 pieces, please pledge $25. For technical reasons, our fence pieces are shipped unpainted - but a shot of white spray paint will fix that in a jiffy.
