APP STATUS - 90% finalized. Estimated release date September/Oct 2012.
MECHANICAL MAN IS YOUR FREEDOM OF CHOICE :
This is the first ever DEVO App utilizing one of the most influential bands of the last 40 years. The App includes never-before-heard music and sounds remastered from the DEVO archives that you can use to create new music plus thousands of artistic assets that you can utilize to create your very own DEVOBOT Robot, digital or Vinyl. This is the DEVO App that fans have been waiting for.
KIT ROBOT in collaboration with DEVO:
DEVO Modular Synthesizer featuring unreleased Devo music & sounds from their archives, coupled with a Devo Robot Maker: A TWO in ONE App Available for your device.
Kit Robot was founded in Oct 2010 by myself (Remo Camerota) with Kiyoshi Kohatsu and Hisako Emura. This independent team, using minimal funds, worked hard for 8 months and finally launched their first application titled Lovebots for iPhone and ipad in Jan 2011. The application was the first ever digital Robot maker, like Lego or Mr Potato head, but digital. The application was well received and quickly rose to number 1 on the iTunes charts. It was extremely popular in Asia and the USA where It ranked No 1 top Entertainment app in Japan, and in the top 20 in the USA, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, UK, Peru, Mexico, Vietnam, India, Portugal and many more. Lovebots was reviewed as App of the Day by Gizmodo, Boing Boing, Wired, singularity hub and many other blogs, making it viral throughout 2011.
So I decided to take the Lovebots app and introduce myself to Devo with the idea of creating the DevoBots app based on DEVO and the Devolution ethos and cross it with our popular app, Lovebots. Because the band DEVO are highly visual and immersed within the arts, I knew that it would be a great fit. I wanted to take DEVOs music, outfits, personas and artwork from the past 40 years and create new artwork inspired by this, for a new generation of fan and mobile device users. So the band loved the idea and were very happy for us to proceed in creating this unique, official Devo App.So DevoBots was born and we began our long journey.
A two in one App.
DevoBots is a digital robot assembly kit and it is also a music synthesizer. The user can create millions of robots out of the box using DevoBot assets to build their very own DEVO, mimicking the bands outfits and personas from the past 40 years. And Devobots is also a modular synthesizer where the user can play, mix and record their very own music and sounds by using and manipulating original, unreleased DEVO sounds and music from banks of sounds stored within the app.
As the app evolves, users will also be able download new Asset and Sound packs as they become available through In App Downloads. This will make the app ever expanding and modular, being able to download 'add ons' to keep the app growing.
Other Features include outputting Devobots as online avatars, desktop images, posters, Tee shirts and apparel, animations mixed with your music creation within the app and you will also be able to create Vinyl Toy Figurine designs, that you can submit to Kit Robot from the app, for creation.
How It Works:
The user picks from thousands of high quality designed assets to mix and match on your device within the DevoBots App. Using the buttons featured in the interface, you use these to choose Unique Heads, Eyes, Arms, Legs etc and create your very own DevoBot. From here you save the artwork, upload it to Facebook, twitter, flickr, etc, for your friends to see. You can use it as an avatar for online social use, print posters, T Shirts, shoes or post cards, or mix it with the music to create a dancing/singing DevoBot. The user can also send in their creation to be featured on the DevoBot fan website, the upcoming Kit Robot Book, or to order Vinyl figures of your design.
Thousands of hours have gone into the development of this application from concept design to thousands of line of code. Over 10,000 unique assets have been created and are available within the App. Each asset is part of a fully designed character, which can be mixed and matched to create over 1 million combinations of DevoBot.
The synthesizer uses original Devo sounds as its main feature. The sounds and music loops used in the app have been remastered from archived DEVO music and sounds that was originally created by DEVO and has been stored in the vaults since the 1980s, AND never heard before. We wanted to bring you a unique selection of sound only found in Devobots, so we spent a lot of time sorting through banks of music to create this. And it won't stop there. Every month or two we will have a new bank of DevoBot sounds available for download at no costs.
Utilizing the buttons available in the Devobot interface, when pressed, the keys will play a loop either once or infinite. You use these in combination to create and record your own music. Other features include a sampler where you can sample your own loop and add it to the existing mix and also Pitch Shift, reverse and volume controls where you can manipulate the sound in real time..
With the synthesizer you can mix up to 12 separate audio parts together while using real time effects to create unique music tracks. You can use the mix as a recording, or play the device in a live session. Using the trackpad you can manipulate the sound by using your fingers to move each sound cross hair around the pad. Each sound can be manipulated in real time, either one by one or up to 5 sounds at a time - or 10 if you have small enough hands. The synthesizer is a powerful tool and can be used as part of any musicians arsenal.
Once you create a music track and a DevoBot avatar, you will be able to then mix them together and have your DevoBot dancing to the sound of your music, as a short animation where you can then upload it to Facebook or Twitter etc.
We are excited to get this over the line and released to the public and we need your help to complete it. Self funding and hard work has enabled us to work on this project for over a year, and it is 90% complete.
We need your support to make the DevoBots SYNTH and Robot Maker available to the public. The the creation of this new type of synth and Robot maker means that a new form of Expression awaits the user. But we need to raise enough funds to continue developing the application for this version and future evolving versions. Your funds will help us get Version 1 over the line, fully tested and released into the market place. It will also help us create new designs for version 2 and beyond, which we will update for no cost. That means more interactive designs, and more unique DEVO electronic sound creations for everyone! Your funds will also enable us to start the DEVOBOTS Army, vinyl figurines, series 1, and go from digitalization to 'Vinylization' . It will also enable us to embark on a DevoBots animation, currently in its conception.
For those of you wondering why we need your help at the point where we are close to launch the iOS version?
Basically for the last year the entire team have worked on this with nothing or very little in return. We are talking about the designers and programers involved in the creation of this. Everyone has gone above and beyond the call of duty and it would be awesome if they could get some compensation for their great work(especially as we still have a lot of work and rewriting to do on the App). We need funds to expand on the DevoBot world and create an Android version, Which has not been started yet but has been requested by the public. Without Kickstater we may never get around to making the Android version. And we want to expand on the concept and create vinyl figures from the characters for release. These have not been started either, so we need to fund all of the aspects of making quality toys like this. Hours of labour, 3D printing machinery , cad design software and a team to do it. You help will go a long way in helping us developing quality products!
Your help will go towards:
* completing the app in its entirety and employing Pietro to finish off coding for Version 1 and write new code for subsequent versions..
* the graphics team to create further high quality designed assets and to make the app expandable for V1 and future developments, updates and versions.
* The Vinyl design team to create the first series of official Collectable DevoBot Army Vinyl figures.
*The purchase of a 3D printer to help them create the prototypes and series of collectable Vinyl Figures.
* For the multimedia team and the creation of promotional videos and materials.
*For the Android programmers, coding of the Android version and For the purchase of Android devices for testing. ( without your help an Android version will be slow on the up take)
* Towards other devices needed for testing including the latest hardware. *Towards concept development for a range of associated DevoBots products. * The production department to keep the DevoBot ship sailing smoothly.
Be the First to receive the App:
Financiers of over $25 will be the first to receive versions of the App as a gift and have a thank you credit visible within the App or on our Site and thus will be part of the Devolutionary Army forever. Depending on how much you donate you will be able to pick up The Limited Edition Signed Vinyl Figures, T Shirts, Keds sneakers, Posters and more. Devo is an American new wave band formed in 1970 - 1972 consisting of members from Kent and Akron Ohio. The classic line-up of the band includes brothers, Mark Mothersbaugh and Bob Mothersbaugh, Gerald and Bob Casale, along with Alan Myers. These days the line up has slightly changed with Josh Freese replacing Myers in 1996.
Once signed to major record labels, Devo are one of the most influential bands of the 20th century. These days, Devo are independent, releasing their music on their own terms and their own label. The name "Devo" comes "from their concept of devolution - the idea that instead of continuing to evolve, mankind has actually begun to regress or Devolve, as evidenced by the dysfunction and herd mentality of American society. This idea was developed as a joke by Kent State University art students Gerald Casale and Bob Lewis as early as the late 1960s. Casale and Lewis created a number of satirical art pieces in a devolution vein. At this time, Casale had also performed with the local band 15-60-75 (The Numbers Band). They met Mark Mothersbaugh around 1970, who introduced them to the pamphlet "Jocko Homo Heavenbound", which includes an illustration of a winged devil labeled "D-EVOLUTION" and would later inspire the song "Jocko Homo". However, the "joke" became serious, following the Kent State shootings of May 4, 1970, which Casale witnessed. This event would be cited multiple times as the impetus for forming the band Devo. For more on Devo check out wikipedia link below.
THE BAND MEMBERS: DEVO
Mark Mothersbaugh - one of the founding members and lead singer and songwriter and the creator of many of the band’s signature synthesizer sounds, including many of the sounds featured in DEVOBOTS. Besides being part of DEVO Mark is also a visual artist. He is the founder of Mutato Muzika, where he creates film scores such as 21 Jump Street, Life Aquatic, The Tennenbaums, Rugrats, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, television theme songs, video games and commercials. In all aspects of his life Mark creates popular culture which is inherent throughout our lives.
Gerald V. Casale AKA- Jerry, Gorji, Chinaman, is another founding member and lead singer of DEVO. DEVOs bassist as well as the band’s lead singer and songwriter. We at Kit Robot owe a lot to Jerry as he is the mastermind behind the design of many of the band’s iconic fashions which are now featured in DEVOBOTS as newly created robotic assets, such as the red Energy Dome, plastic pompadour, and yellow radiation suits. He is also the director of commercials & music videos by artists including The Cars, Rush, A Perfect Circle, Foo Fighters, Soundgarden, and Silverchair.
Bob Mothersbaugh, AKA,Clown, Brother of Mark, commonly referred to as “Bob 1”, is responsible for DEVO’s guitar sound. He also produces soundtracks for film and TV, such as All Grown Up, How to Eat Fried Worms, and the animated Nickelodeon TV series Rugrats .
Bob Casale - Brother of Jerry, “Bob 2”, switches between playing rhythm guitar and synthesizer. Bob is also a producer and engineer who has worked with David Byrne, The Vandals, and Andy Summers of The Police.
Josh Freese - joined in 1996 - Josh is well-known as a member of The Vandals, Nine Inch Nails, Guns N’ Roses, Weezer, and A Perfect Circle. He began playing professionally at the age of 12 and has appeared on over 300 records.
