This Kickstarter is designed to fund a 5 minute live-action trailer for our cyberpunk-fantasy series. Think Bladerunner meets the Matrix meets Lord of the Rings!
Our intent is to build our proof of concept, demonstrate our quality and capabilities, and to recruit a following for our true goal – a full season of "Chicago Shadows." With our community (you!) at the core, we will produce a dynamic, six episode serial story for “Chicago Shadows"...and that's just season one.
We will focus on one of the central characters of the series itself, a woman – street name Curie, as she struggles to survive in a cold future ruled by overbearing corporations.
Forced to leave her morals at the door, Curie is a freelance operative working as a ‘deniable asset’ for anyone with the cash to pay. The survival rate in her line of work is abysmal for those without an edge on the competition. Curie has an edge – magic has awakened within her, allowing her to bend the very elements to her will.
Will it be enough?
Follow Curie on a mission with her team of the day - an ork hacker, an elven fighter, and a human driver/pilot as they work together to complete a job. One of the tough parts of this line of work - the people you work with and come to rely on don't always make it through.
Making movies is pricey (who knew?). Beginning with a 5-minute, live-action trailer, we want our audience and supporters to see the quality of what we can produce before we go big and begin producing the pilot – or even the whole season! We also want to build our team of supporters, which is what this Kickstarter is about – connecting to passionate people like you, building a community that can make this series real! Our backers are critical to making this happen, and we're excited to gather people together who can generate energy around fantasy-cyberpunk excitement! The trailer we're planning will give a taste of our world, our characters, our atmosphere and of course, our skill. Once we prove ourselves, we’re all in. We hope you will be, too! We're thrilled to take this journey with you!
If funded, we will launch pre-production by end of August, shoot in late Fall, and complete post-production by late spring, 2020.
We are Rem Alternis Productions, Inc.--a woman-owned startup production company based out of Chicago. Our mission is:
- To produce high-quality and socially relevant films that support inclusion, individualism, and acceptance within our own and fictional worlds.
- To build a “safe space” by creating ethical partnerships and promoting games, creators, and artists who share in our philosophy of inclusion, individualism, and acceptance.
- To act as a trusted resource for aspiring artists and creators, and assist them in building connections and taking steps toward achieving their own dreams.
We recently completed a video for Catalyst Game Labs to market the release of Shadowrun 6th World! Watch the video and read all about it at https://www.remalternis.com/main/doomsday-in-the-sixth-world/.
We have partnered with cyberpunk fantasy writers and experts in the gaming industry, experienced and talented prosthetics and special effects teams, and Chicago local award winning filmmakers. More importantly, everyone we have recruited is an enthusiastic fan of the genre, and have given countless hours to making this a high quality production that does the world justice. And MOST importantly, we have you. We consider each and every one of our backers as part of our team. We can't do this without you, and we want to include you in every step of the journey!
Be sure to check out the Bios page on our website, and our photo gallery to learn more about our awesome team and what they can do!
For transparency sake, I would like to note that this is a project of passion, and everyone working on this has agreed to work for “cheap, if not free” on the trailer in the hopes that we get that pilot. So, if we beat our goal, we get to pay our talented people.
Then, further funding will go toward marketing, and even further…funding the pilot!
While shipping within the United States can be more predictable, shipping internationally carries many hidden costs. We believe that it’s wiser to err on the high side to make sure everything gets shipped out. In some cases, it may result in Backers from countries with more relaxed shipping fees carrying some of the cost to ship to Backers in countries with greater associated expenses.
What is NOT our intent is to end up sitting on a surplus of postage funds. We’ll let everyone know how our shipping costs add up and make sure that any surplus goes back into the community with your input, perhaps in the form of extra goodies stashed in packages, pushing towards a nearly reached stretch goal, or maybe even some genius idea that one of you comes up with!
As we achieve each Stretch Goal, we will reveal the next goal with a description!
So, all of this is about a trailer, which means there’s an entire series to focus on after. What exactly is “Chicago Shadows” and what’s our big picture plan? Sure, “Chicago Shadows” is going to be a fantasy cyberpunk web series, but what does that mean exactly?
Rem Alternis is all set to pull the trigger on a six-episode season of “Chicago Shadows”. The scripts are written and a creative team assembled. What’s left is the funding. Each episode will cost approximately $130-$150K to produce, and each episode will be approximately 30 minutes. It’s a huge project and we’re dedicated to making it happen. Of course, securing that level of funding requires taking the passion from our community—you—and amplifying that momentum to expand interest and prove feasibility.
Our first episode, the pilot, takes the elements of our trailer to the next level. You meet Curie in our trailer, of course. She’s a relative newcomer to the shadows but in the pilot, she’ll join a team of veterans pulling one of their own out of a tight spot. Meet our pilot's cast of characters below.
Words can't convey how grateful we are for our community's continued support through this project. Your enthusiasm, encouragement, and kind words have made all the hard work worth it, and we can't wait to share this series with you. Thank you to all our backers, and supporters on social media for pushing this so far and wide. We appreciate every bit of it!

Risks and challenges
With every major project, a variety of obstacles can impact some or all of your deliverables. In our case, we have one central product, the trailer, and a handful of backer rewards that are no less important because each of them represents our commitment to the community that supports us. Without that community, there can be no successful campaign, there will be no trailer, and there’s really nothing left to Rem Alternis.
We’ve done a lot of the legwork ahead of the campaign to mitigate the risks, but no plan survives contact with the enemy, and we understand that some events are simply beyond our control. Manufacturer delays, customs, quality assurance are just a sample of the wrenches that can get tossed in the gears. The bright side is that none of these are showstoppers and can, at worst, only slow the tide. So, rest assured that every physical item will be delivered to you.
Which brings us to the trailer. It’s a big project with lots of moving parts. Like any film, it can be subject to delays from weather, rewrites, set availability. Each of these can start to push against budget constraints. Happily, we’ve managed to assemble an amazing crew that wants to see this project come to life, so we don’t anticipate financial penalties for working around uncontrollable events. Most of our costs are fixed, regardless of shifting timetables.
Still, we want to make sure we’ve taken care of you, just as you are taking care of us, so that leaves us with one more strategy: transparency. If there is an obstacle we didn’t foresee, if the latest polar vortex pushes filming back a week, if tariffs jump to 200%, you will know as fast as we do. We’ll never hold something close to the chest, hoping it will go away or resolve itself. We’ll let you know, right away. That’s the level of trust we want to build with our community. With you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
