What is the RepRap Project?
RepRap is an open-source desktop 3D printer capable of printing plastic objects. Since many parts of RepRap are made from plastic and RepRap can print those parts, RepRap is a self-replicating machine - one that anyone can build given time and materials. It also means that - if you've got a RepRap - you can print lots of useful stuff, and you can print another RepRap for a friend.
The RepRap project is all about making self-replicating machines, and making them freely available for the benefit of everyone. RepRap was the first of the low-cost 3D printers, and the RepRap Project started the open-source 3D printer revolution. It is described in the video above.
How does the Reprap machine work?
Look at your computer setup and imagine that you hooked up a 3D printer. Instead of printing on bits of paper, this 3D printer makes real, robust, mechanical parts. To give you an idea of how robust, think Lego bricks and you're in the right area. You could make lots of useful stuff, but interestingly you could also make most of the parts to make another 3D printer. That would be a machine that could copy itself.
RepRap is short for Replicating Rapid-prototyper. It is the practical self-copying 3D printer introduced in the video - a self-replicating machine. This 3D printer builds the parts up in layers of plastic.
How does Relative Design want to help the RepRap Project?
The funds we raise will be used to build a RepRap 3D printer. We plan to use this printer to make complete part sets for more printers. The parts we print will be distributed within the community to help propel the adoption of low-cost rapid prototyping technologies. We plan to build our website into an approachable, information-rich hub for those who are interested in making their own printer.
We want to do everything we can to flood the market with affordable, high quality Reprap parts. We very much believe in the vision and principles of those involved with the RepRap project and want to help spread the word about this incredible technology.
What are the rewards?
Pledge $50 or more and you'll receive a full set of the printed parts for a Huxley printer. The Huxley is a smaller model than the Mendel but it can still print parts required to make a Mendel or another Huxley.
Pledge $100 or more and we'll send you a full set of printed parts needed to make a Prusa printer. The Prusia Mendel is a more simplified version of the original Mendel design. This model is recommended if you're new to RepRap.
If you make a pledge of $1000 or more you will be the recipient of a complete Prusa RepRap printer. Printed parts, hardware, and electronics will all be included. We will build, test, and ship it to you with minimum disassembly. Some assembly will be required upon receipt.
