WHAT IS LIVE LOOPING?
PLEASE watch the intro video to see a live looping example! Short answer: when a sound artist uses technology to capture musical phrases created live, then layering and manipulating them with additional sounds.
WHAT IS A LOOPTOBER TOUR?
Although live looping has been around a long time, it only started for me two years ago, and until recently, I had no idea there were festivals and groups focused on 'live looping'. A few months ago, I posted some of my looping videos on YouTube and shortly thereafter, a veteran looper IMd me that I should make contact with another veteran looper and founder of Loop Festivals. We connected, and after checking my vids, I was invited to play in the Y2K13 International Live Looping Festival! How cool is that?!
Shortly thereafter, another Looping artist/promoter contacted me about playing his festivals that month too. That's how this Looptober madness came about...
We will videotape my shows to make a 'Best-of' video of the tour, because when someone just hears my CD, they may think, 'hmmm, a vocal trio with two guitarists...' - that's why it takes a multi-camera video to demonstrate that all the sound is coming from one person, live without backing tracks - and that's a big part of inspiring others to try looping themselves...

MY GOAL IN ONE SENTENCE:
My goal is to make this my best tour ever, to capture it on video for sharing with my backers, and to use the video for promotion and/or a disc release.
WHY DO A KICKSTARTER?
I'm doing this Kickstarter to generate exposure, offset the costs of the tour, and to have enough CDs to sell at the shows. Being 100% funded will allow me to spend more time rehearsing and writing instead of spending that time working overtime to accumulate the funds - and that will mean my show will be that much more developed and I will be (a little) less anxious. Also, having enough merchandise, such as CDs, to sell at the shows is the best way to promote my music! Since I am 'sold out' of my solo CD first pressing, I'd like to run at least 100 more for sales at the shows.
The $1000 will go to offset these expenses:
- Gas - approx. $400-550
- Rental Car - approx. $500-700
- CDs from short-run replication service - $175-275
To accomplish the tour and video recording requires myself (the looper) and my daughter (the film pro). We'll use 100% of your backing to offset expenses for the 2336 mile round-trip, and to make more copies of my Solo Sojourn CDs to sell at the shows.
IS ECO-GAMI A REAL SIDE DISH?
I don't think so - ECO-GAMI is what I'm calling my original Disc Packaging design for DIY (do-it-yourself) artists. For this new run of CDs, instead of paying for jewel cases, we'll cut packaging costs and GO GREEN with my original 'ECO-GAMI' jacket design. Perfect for environmentally (and cash) conscious DIY artists, I designed the Eco-Gami as a single 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper, printed on both sides and folded to create a CD jacket. There's enough room for photos, liner notes and lyrics - and no cutting, special perforated paper, jewel cases or minimum print runs are involved. Artists can print Eco-Gami using consumer printers and I share my template free to any who ask. The jacket is as rigid as the paper or card stock you print it on and I also enclose the CDs in white paper inner sleeves and shrinkwrap the outside. Many consumers throw away their jewel cases after buying a CD these days anyway...
Below is a video showing my Eco-Gami cover design:
We’re also saving money because we already have printing, shrink-wrapping and labeling gear, as well as everything we need to shoot, edit and author CDs and DVDs. I have already started running a homemade (DIY) batch of CDs so that I'll have enough for both; selling at shows and for fulfilling the rewards.
Additional funds by exceeding our goal will go towards making more merchandise (more, higher quality and/or 'fancier' CDs, possibly shirts or stickers) to sell at the show. Backers choosing the $2000 or $5000 reward can be assured it will not be considered 'pocket profit' - it will be applied to offset additional tour and merchandise costs, allow better quality CDs, AND to offset future manufacturing costs for the tour video highlights on CD and/or DVD after the tour. Once the campaign ends, I will update backers with a projected use of funds that exceed my $1000 goal. Rest assured, I know how important it is to set aside some resources for fulfillment and mailing out rewards too.
Remember, I get nothing unless we reach the $1000 goal in 14 days!
We must make the goal before the end of this campaign or I get nothing - a 14-day campaign leaves me just enough time to collect the funds and for CD/merchandise production time - If I don’t hit the $1000 goal, I WILL STILL be making the trek to play, but it will be with a handful of CDs to sell, totally out of pocket and without the best way to generate sales revenues AND leave an impression...merchandise.
I will take the counsel of my mentors and friends who assure me that with the support, encouragement and sales that I’ve had so far as a soloist, hitting the $1000 goal is realistic - and this is just the beginning of an exciting new adventure that is going to help others discover my unique style of music.
REWARDS THAT COME FROM MY ON-HAND STOCK: Signed Vinyl LPs, Glow-in-the Dark picks, Tour Posters and Postcards, Citadel CDs, Show Programs, Music and Video Downloads, Musical Gear - all will be shipped/emailed after the tour in November.
REWARDS THAT COME FROM MY TO-DO LIST: Shouts, Art Services, Music/Loop Tutoring, Recording, Composing and Performance services. Refer to those rewards for time frames.
REWARDS AS A RESULT OF 100% FUNDING: CDs in Eco-Gami covers as rewards for those getting physical copies. Also, audio and video from all four shows will be edited into the Highlights and Director's Choice reels for backers to view and share online. Those reels will also be sent on physical DVDs to upper reward tiers that specify a Director's Cut, then released for online viewing to the Pre-Release Reward groups, then to the rest of the backers when released to the public on Vimeo/YouTube. I am planning to produce this video as if it were also going to be released on disc - which I may also choose to do because it will sound and look GREAT when post-production is finished.
'Your name in the credits' rewards refers to on-screen video credits.
Also, in the event I decide to manufacture DVD/Blu-Ray's after the tour, I could include backers names in the printed liner notes of those releases. Or, in the event I decide to put more pages in the show program, backers could also get a credit there. Or, In the event I am able to make shirts printed on both sides, I could put a list of all the backers names to print on the back. There are many creative ways to utilize additional funds that I will post about as the campaign progresses.
All physical goods will be autographed and everything offered is my original work. Everyone gets a shout and gets listed in the credits (you can request not to be listed if you'd like). Pre-release online access to the Looptober Live video is also included in all pledges $15 and above. And remember, you can always pledge more than the reward value, and you can pledge without requesting a reward if that is your inclination.
HERE'S THE REWARDS!
TO SUM IT ALL UP
I am honored to perform in these Loop Festivals, and I’m going to have the best time of my life performing my most amazing shows ever! I really want my daughter to be a part of it and my mom is planning to fly in from Ohio for one of the shows! I’ve already 'met' a few dozen other loopers and am encouraged by the community support and sincerity among these artists, as well as the INCREDIBLE music these loopers are creating and performing - solo!
John Lennon wrote many lines that are etched in my mind forever, but this is one I recite when I question my life path:
"You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one, I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will live as one”
Let's dream big and loop it up!
What else am I about?
I believe that there is under-recognized, untapped therapeutic value in live music and live theatre and I have goals to prove that in the future in hospitals, prisons, rehab centers, seniors homes, orphanages and infirm animal facilities.
My biggest musical desire is that I will be always be able to share music with others, and that by sharing, I will encourage others to find their own inspiration and tools to create their own art. I take every opportunity to edify and teach others what I've learned - just ask around if you need that verified -
My biggest drive as a human is to encourage others to dream and believe; in themselves, in those around them, and in the potential our race has to do good things for the future of all sentient life.
I'm also intuitively linked to canines...that's no secret to those who know me :) A future dream of mine is to open a dog sanctuary for the old, infirm or abandoned fuzzy guardian angels...and to play music for them.
After 30 years as a musician, I have never had this much fun on stage, nor imagined it was possible to perform these complex pieces as a soloist! Thank you for considering my campaign!
I ALWAYS THANK MY FUZZY PARTNER, KOSH :)
The video below is my acoustic instrumental looping tune 'Happy Hands', dedicated to Kosh, as recorded at one of my Java Central shows. Since you can't see my feet in this video, here's the loopology of the song: I first play (while recording into the looper) the rhythm part (chords/strumming), then I tap the looper which restarts that first part and allows me to layer in a lead guitar part, when the loop starts again, I add a second (harmony) guitar part, and finally a bass line over all of it. (Happy Hands is also the background music of my intro video)
The Amazing Kosh!
Risks and challenges
There may also be unforeseen illness, delays, snafus, car or equipment breakdowns and other hurdles but I plan to push through all of them - and I have a track record of fortitude!
I've been a do-it-yourself artist since before it was a 'cool' status that has its own acronym...wow, could I elaborate on that experience... Suffice it to say, I am very familiar with the processes, timeframes and limitations of producing and releasing music and video products. I will be rehearsing every day while working to manage funds and make DIY goods to augment my merchandise quantities - I've set a very short campaign duration to allow for funds release and CD/merchandise manufacturing times in time for the tour.
You can ask anyone who knows me if I am tenacious, determined and relentless - they will endorse that I am these things, as well as a fun loving, people person. Look at my website (http://rejyna.com) and you'll see a lifepath's worth of creative output.
I plan to post updates and communicate about any delays/setbacks as well as the progress of my campaign. I welcome you to check out my links, connect with me and contribute any suggestions/feedback you have along the way.
