Video Update! (June 3rd)
I've just added a new video to replace the first one I did for this Kickstarter, which you can view below!
LET'S MAKE SOME SUPER-COOL T-SHIRTS!
Since I was a young kid, I've loved fashion! Whether it was through weekly shopping trips where I'd sift through cool clothes in my favourite stores, or bookshops, where I'd head straight for the magazine aisle! Nothing excited me more than spending hours every weekend in Borders (before it closed down in the UK!), navigating the pages of U.S. magazines like NYLON and Complex. It was clear that I'd become a fan of this sick underground streetwear culture, full of talented creatives. It left an impression on me that led to a lifelong fascination with ultra-cool Japanese brands like Bape, BBC and Comme Des Garcons!
There was something about these brands that set them apart from others - everything was on another level - the fabric, colours, graphics, store interiors - they opened my mind to the artistic side of fashion that goes way beyond the clothes themselves. As major players in the fashion industry, I believed that you had to have the same, global status to get in the game. That was until I discovered a bunch of creative people with similar dreams as mine. The difference was, they were actually doing it. Whether in their parent's garage or their own bedroom, they found space to design and print a T-Shirt from scratch, a realisation that blew me away completely!
In the summer of 2012, a friend and I built HUB, YO. - an online magazine that focused on 'limited edition clothing' as a way to pay homage to designers who really cared about their craft. I grew tired of seeing a million people wearing the same T-Shirt, designed by talented people who were working for huge retailers, but receiving no recognition for their contribution. One of our most popular posts to-date was a curated list of one-hundred sick T-Shirts, designed by independent brands.
Then Things Got Real!
Towards the end of last year I took the plunge and signed myself up for a day of something I've grown to love more than anything - screenprinting. I shopped around to find the right course, and stumbled upon the low-key but bustling, Print Club London Studio, situated down the back alley of a road in London. Walking through the ancient steel doors I was greeted by the sight of open paint tins, freshly printed artwork and happy faces, and realised - this is where it's at! Printing my own art, by hand, surrounded by people with the same ambition.

Starting From Scratch.....
My day at Print Club London was such an insane, defining experience that I decided I wanted to set up my own studio in my bedroom to improve my craft. It took a while to track down all the equipment I needed to get started, but it was so worth it and taught me a lot about DIY! Wickes, B&Q and Homebase quickly became family members as I searched everywhere for the right materials.
Building The Print Table
Finding a decent make-shift print table appropriate for screenprinting isn't as easy as it sounds! What I should have done from the get-go was head straight to a wood recycling plant and picked up a decent-sized piece of wood. Instead, I spent numerous hours walking around DIY stores looking for something that would do the job. Oh well, you live and you learn! In addition to this fine piece of wood are the hinge clamps which support the screen while you print. Installing them was the easy part. Waiting 3 weeks for them to arrive wasn't. I didn't care though because now I finally had the tools to start printing for real! Yeah :)
The Brightest Domestic Light On The Planet!
I shopped around for the brightest, most powerful UV light I could possibly get my hands on and this was the outcome! My first purchase was a 400 Watt Halogen Worklight but quickly realised that the plug was an 'industrial-grade', requiring an 'industrial socket' (I don't have one of those in my bedroom unfortunately!), so I settled for a 110 UV Energy Efficient Lamp instead. It takes a little longer to burn the image into the screen but it uses up very little electricity - smart move Josh!

The 'HUB, YO.' Collection
I then began bouncing around different ideas for designs that I'd come up with. I thought, now that I've got the equipment to print T-Shirts in my own bedroom, why not design a few myself? I couldn't resist the opportunity and at the start of this year began putting together a collection of original designs.
It started off as a collaboration with first-year-Kingston-University-art-prodigy - Ben Giles, and went on to become a line of 5 T-Shirts, limited to a run of 100 per design. In addition to the T-Shirts, through this Kickstarter Project I plan to fund a special edition jumper of 'The Open-Minded Thinker' in a run of 100 as well as signed and numbered A3 prints of each of the 5 designs. I will be using crisp white Earth Positive Blank T-Shirts which are grown and stitched on a solar-powered farm. Cool, right?! The jumpers are made by accredited-brand 'AWD', and are a lightweight 50/50 cotton/polyester blend. As with everything I've made so far, every item will be handprinted in London, by myself, using fresh, water-based inks!
#1 'The Open-Minded Thinker'
This design was born out of the idea that those who keep an open-mind tend to get more out of life and out of themselves. Thanks to Ben Giles' artististic talents, we managed to come up with some that was intricate, cool and meaningful.
#2 - 'Brapchup'
Like with most things I come up with, the 'Brapchup' T-Shirt began as a casual conversation over food with friends. I tend to throw out variations of common words and phrases to amuse myself, but this particular coinage has replaced the original word in our everyday conversation and now exists as a Tee!
#3 - 'Lolly Bear'
As an addict of sugary things I couldn't help but create something to represent that. Ice Lolly's and Gummy Bears are two 'treats' that I love to consume in ridiculous quantities so why not merge the two into one delicious design?!
#4 - 'Inner Circle'
I'm a huge fan of busy prints and thought it would be cool to create an abundance of different hole-punched shapes! The end-product is an intensely-visual grid of individual shapes.
#5 - 'Four Michaels'
Inspired but a line I heard on Kanye's West's most recent album, 'Cruel Summer', where he commends the Michaels of our generation - 'If you ever held the title belt, you would know how Michael felt, Tyson, Jackson, Jordan, Michael Phelps'), I immediately thought about ways to translate this idea into a design. It started off as just four names on the back, and grew into a two-sided T-Shirt, with a half-microphone-head/half-basketball illustration on the front.
*NEW!* #6 - 'Cash Injection'
Some time ago, I thought about creating a cool T-Shirt that celebrated the hustle of starting something from scratch and finding a way to fund your efforts. Being on Kickstarter has been my way of funding my passion, so to celebrate reaching and going beyond my target, I want to share with you the 'Cash Injection' Tee. I wanted to do something fun and original and came up with a few design ideas that really represented everyone's support of my project. I will happily print the banknotes in any colour you wish!

Limited Edition Prints!
Earth Positive Organic T-Shirts
I plan to print the designs on top quality, Earth Positive T-Shirts, made from organically-grown yarn! The texture of the fabric is super-soft, and each tee is long and fitted so I'd advise buying a size larger than your regular size.
The T-Shirts will be available in the following sizes:
Small - Suitable For 35-37 Inch Chest
Medium - Suitable For 38-40 Inch Chest
Large - Suitable For 41-43 Inch Chest
X-Large - Suitable For 44-46 Inch Chest
XX-Large (Regular Fit) - Suitable For 48-50 Inch Chest
AWD Lightweight Heather Sweatshirts
These are also fitted, so a size up may be better for you! Made from a lightweight 50/50 Cotton-Polyester blend.
The Jumpers will be available in the following sizes:
Small - 36 Inch Chest
Medium - 40 Inch Chest
Large - 44 Inch Chest
X-Large - 48 Inch Chest
XX-Large - 52 Inch Chest
The T-Shirts are 'fitted', so it's best to order a size above what you would normally wear. For example, I'm 6 ft. 2", medium-build and wear an XL and it fits me perfectly. The sizing is exactly the same for the jumpers!
What The Money's For
The funds we generate through your help will be used to provide the materials, rent, storage and shipping costs of the collection. We're already in contact with some incredible suppliers of blank T-Shirts and jumpers who've been instrumental in getting us this far. In addition to the blank materials we will need ink, emulsion and printing medium, as well as other essential consumables. Our studio space will be at Print Club London who charge a monthly membership fee.
If you have any questions, ideas, thoughts or feedback please feel free to send me a message on Kickstater via the 'see full bio' link under my user profile!
I really appreciate the time you've taken to read my story! What I really need now is for people like you, who really feel a part of this culture, to help me push it forward. Spreading the word amongst your friends is a great way to get the ball rolling. If you're digging the designs, then feel free to buy something! It's all limited edition, so you can be sure that you're buying a work of art that comes with a story!
I plan to update this Kickstarter page with updates on how things are going!

One Last Question…
What's 'different' about what you're doing? My answer is - I Care.
Risks and challenges
As long as I reach my target of £1500, I should be able to produce and deliver your rewards! Having already had some experience screenprinting, I've become very familiar with the process and won't need to practise beforehand, saving time and money. The rewards will be dispatched at the end of June :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
