About

None of us choose the family we are born into nor do we choose where we are born. Still, it is along these lines that we are forced to learn about ourselves and our place in this world.

With this in mind, what does it mean to hold an identity that spans boundaries? How do we interpret the visual manifestations, social experiences, and internal processes that shape these individuals' lives?

region is the oasis at a cross section of invisibility.

region explores how borders shape the lives, art, and conversations of migrants, refugees, and first generation Americans living in the Midwest.

The idea of region stemmed from my experiences growing up and having conversations with friends and family regarding where we belong - neither here nor there, not wholly American but also too American for your family back home (wherever that may be).

As I grew to internalize depictions of coastal cities as hubs for people of all identities, I questioned how our location and environment might influence how we define home, belongingness, and community. (For example, being Nigerian-American in Wichita, KS may differ from being Nigerian-American in Washington D.C.)

region was created to be a platform for people to discuss and display how we navigate self-discovery, local representation, community, and what these conversations look like at the regional level.

As region grows, subsequent issues will continue to provide a platform for the Midwest's migrant communities, highlighting local entrepreneurs, artists, writers, musicians, researchers, community leaders, volunteers, poets, builders, and so much more, advocating for the issues that affect our lives nationally and locally.

Risks and challenges

As neighborhood newsletters and language-specific publications aim to provide a sense of community and awareness for those in the immediate area, so too is the intention of creating region as a physically printed publication. While region is made in a single language, which is not ideal for everyone, our hope is that the physicality of it allows for distribution in a way that is not limited to the digitally literate, people with computer access, or those with previous knowledge of its existence.

As region strives for representation and advocacy, we are aware that the politicized nature of many migrant identities means representation looks different for everyone. Though we strive to create a space for open conversation, protecting our communities is equally important as celebrating them and giving them a voice.
