We have gone to the drawing board to design a bag made entirely from Rubbish.
They are light, durable, and each bag is wonderfully unique.
There is no sewing at all, so they cannot come apart at the seams, as there are none. They are held together by the up-cycled safety belt that also double as the shoulder strap.
These bags are designed, manufactured, and assembled by hand in Levin, New Zealand.
Breaking the pattern
Our aim is to design meaningful creations from waste materials.
We believe that the best way to counter the impact of consumer culture is to design creations using waste materials as our base resource. We transform that resource into durable items that meet a real need using minimalist design.
We create products that have meaning, with stories that become deeper with every journey you take them on.
Refreshed is an initiative of the Greenhouse Community, some of whom are pictured below. We are an inclusive group of people who care about strengthening Levin and creating a space of belonging. Refreshed is an initiative that grew from a desire to be better Kaitiaki of our environment and provide employment at a living wage to those who struggle to get employment otherwise.
Made From Rubbish
It's at the core of what we do here to create from waste materials. The billboard skins are sourced from advertising companies. The Seat belts come from a range of car upholsterers and Scrap yards who cannot sell them on by law. The leather straps come from old suitcases and handbags that are no longer fit for purpose.
We give them a new life as a durable bag that will keep them away from the landfill for a little longer and bring some fresh swagger to your everyday carry.
No Stitching on the bag = no stitching coming undone
The Rubbish Bags are held together with a single seat-belt strap that holds the bag in shape. We have also gone to significant lengths to develop the bags so that there is no stitching anywhere else.
The result is that the Bags will be able to endure for a much longer time. A bag that will last with you along your journey with no stitching to come undone along the way.
Each bag is made from a different part of a billboard and has its own unique flavour that comes with it in different colours and textures.
After our campaign has finished we will contact everyone who has pledged with a range of colors that you can choose from.
These bags are super durable! Not only is there no stitching to come undone, but the very materials that the bag is made of is designed to last for long periods of time out in the weather. No matter how hard you treat your gear, these bags will last the distance.
The billboard skins that we use to make the bags are waterproof. Testing has shown us that water does not get through even in heavy rain, though if fully immersed, water does seep in.
This makes the bags particularly good in windy/rainy areas with particular value to the laptop bag.
Fully adjustable strap
Some like it long, The straps are fully adjustable. You won't have the problem of not being able to wear it the way you want, or only being able to adjust it so far.
To meet different needs we designed three different sizes of bags, ranging from a small essentials bag, up to a bag that can easily carry a 14-inch laptop. They are all sixty mm thick so they are not too bulky, and the billboard skin material is very resilient while still being thin and light.
resilient enough that it can take any damage and water just runs off it.
As the name suggests, this bag is big enough to fit essentials; phone, keys, a paperback etc. It's light, unique, and durable enough to stay in one piece as long as you do.
- Height:220 mm
- width: 190 mm
- Thick: 60 mm
Good for a day out, it fits an A4 sketchbook without the bulk. Not too big, not too small, perfect for your everyday mahi!
- Height 320 mm
- width 245 mm
- Thick: 60 mm
The everything bag, it holds a 14-inch laptop with plenty of extra room for all your hopes and dreams.
- Height 360 mm
- width: 250 mm

We started designing this concept over a year ago. There have been many, many iterations of the bag since it then.

Risks and challenges
There is always the potential for unforeseen challenges, but we have done everything we can to meticulously plan every stage of design, manufacture and delivery.
There is the possibility that if we overshoot our goal by a multiple of ten it will be difficult to source enough rubbish, would that be a great problem!
After the Kickstarter campaign ends, if we have reached our goal we will reach out to everybody who has pledged to find out either what colours they do want, or what they don't want as well as prefered bag size if that was not specified in the pledge.
If anybody does have any questions, I am more than happy to discuss them.
