My name is Rees Finlay and 2 years ago you all helped me fund and produce my autobiographical comic book 'The Blue Flame' which went on to sell out completely and garner glowing reviews. Well now i'm back and even bigger and better than before with my superhero tale 'The High Priestess'
This journey began in 2015, the year I first broke into comics with all the grace and style of that guy from 'Home Alone', and inspired by the franchise figureheads i grew up with, I desperately wanted my own superhero series, inspired by the strong women I've met over the years (emotionally strong, not muscles, but they're cool too) i began work on 'High Priestess'. Intended as a 4 part series it was an action packed, fun adventure full of quirky quips and edgy characters.
But shortly after issue 2 released...I was in a car accident that really threw me off my career trajectory and comics fell to the wayside as life got in the way. And sadly the last 2 installments were never produced and the story of the High Priestess was never concluded. Alot happened in the years that followed, including my return to comics with my graphic memoir 'The Blue Flame', which marked a giant leap in regards to my skills as an illustrator and storyteller. This, in turn, opened doors to working for trading card companies to work as an official artist for 'Star Wars', 'Stranger Things' and 'The Walking Dead', but the passion to return to comics was bubbling under the surface.
Now, if i was to finish issue 3+4 of that series. the artwork would be INSANELY different from that i produced as a wide-eyed and naive young boyo in 2015, not to mention a huge difference in the quality of the writing. So late last year i took the decision to completely REMAKE issues one and two as part of this project.
And that's where we are now, as I write this, the production the series is well over half way finished, i'm putting on my pimp hat to promote the hell out of it, and hoping that you will help fund this passion project 4 years in the making.
Over the years that followed from the release of 'The Blue Flame', I've been blessed with incredible career opportunities and experiences, but to counter that there has been many difficult challenges on my path, resulting in a life changing diagnosis that was incredibly hard to come to terms with. And these ups and downs has been extremely valuable in shaping what 'The High Priestess' will be. Tapping into that emotional core that made my last book a success, as well as reflecting on the tropes that I take umbrage with in the superhero genre to deliver a book that earns its place in the vast ocean of brilliant superhero titles.
Like my previous book, I will make you laugh, make you cry, and make you proud to be a backer of a book that has been a huge part of my life, and to give me the chance to print and distribute a complete graphic novel that has finally come together in a story that's bigger than i ever imagined, with artwork i never thought myself capable of producing.
The graphic novel will have a cover from the brilliant Emily Pearson (Black mask's 'The Wilds' and 'Snap Flash Hustle') and each issue will boast cover art from a roster of talent (to be announced in installments as the campaign goes on) as well as a host of great goodies to be obtained via the pledges.
You can read Issue One right now on the comichaus app. which sports a 14 day free trial with no card details etc (which is nice). And stay tuned on here for production diaries, previews and potential stretch goals if you lovely people can help me hit that target.
Keep an eye on the updates tab as i intend to post regular news, as well as sharing new art and product designs, and potential stretch goals.
Thank you for your time,
Risks and challenges
This project is being written, illustrated, coloured and lettered by me. And i have always treated crowdfunding as a method to fund the printing of the book and paying for the guest artists. as opposed to 'pay me to go off and make something'. So the production will allready be in its final stages by the end of the kickstarter campaign. I am currently on a trajectory to have the pages finished by april, ready for print in may, and in your hands by june AT THE LATEST
There is speculation that the outcome of Brexit will impact the production costs due to importing the paper, If this does become an issue, i am willing to take the hit on it. To buy a book on here will be £15 no matter what. however they may cost more to non-backers when i attend book events and comic-cons.
Postage will be standard postage from the UK. allow extra time for overseas shipping. But there is little/no risk in regards to fulfilling orders, as kickstarter will constantly monitor the status of my project, and asks backers to leave feedback when you receive your pledges. My previous (and only) kickstarter project has that feedback from 100% of backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
