In 2017, artist Carie Varner attempted the Inktober challenge, an internet tradition wherein artists create one inked piece of art every day during the month of October and share it online with using the hashtag #Inktober. Thirty-one pieces of art is a lot of work, and producing one each day is time-consuming and challenging. As happens with many artists, Carie fell behind and failed Inktober 2017.
In 2018, Carie devised a plan to take the challenge more seriously. Instead of focusing on themed subject matter, she chose to limit the size of her illustrations to postcards. At the end of October, she had 31 pieces of art, each measuring 4.25 by 5.5 inches. Several of the original pieces have sold, but Carie really wanted a way to showcase them all together.
Following Carie's successful campaign for the coloring book, Colorful Tales of Dreadful Dolls, it seemed natural to use Kickstarter to run a campaign to have the full set of #Inktober2018 postcards printed as a set!
From nature to fantasy to the macabre, the postcards have a variety of subject matters. The art styles are also varied, including illustrations with clean line work, ink washes and abstract "busking."
During October 2018, Carie created 31 postcards for Inktober. These postcards, along with a special Thank You postcard featuring the names of backers, are the basic set for this Kickstarter. The postcards will measure approximately 4x6 inches and will be printed on 18pt card stock with a glossy UV coating. All of the regular postcards in the set are shown below.
Carie Varner is an artist and illustrator from the Chicagoland area now living in Cleveland, Tennessee. Carie has a Bachelors of Fine Arts from the American Acadamy of Art in Chicago with a concentration in Life Drawing and Sculpture. After graduating, Carie trained under world-renowned oil painter Wes Berrier and was commissioned to create and construct a life-size sculpture for the Welcoming Hall at the VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso, Indiana. Today, Carie continues to make art as Reel Fun Studios and considers her greatest piece of art ever created to be her daughter, Dakota Grace, whom she co-created with her husband, Ryan.
Carie sells her original artwork and prints at conventions and shows all over the southeast. She is also a cohost on the On A Roll podcast about role-playing games, and will have her artwork featured on the cover of Snowhaven, an upcoming RPG from High Level Games. Last year, Carie used Kickstarter to publish Colorful Tales of Dreadful Dolls, a coloring book featuring her artwork of creepy dolls paired with spooky short stories by Ryan Faricelli.
The basic set of 31 postcards will be printed and fulfilled for backers if the $700 goal is reached. After that, there are several additional stretch goals that all backers at the $25 level and higher will receive.
$800 – Carie will create a new postcard for the set, bringing the total to 32.
$900 – This level will provide art supplies for Carie to create a set of postcards next year for #Inktober2019.
$1,000 – Carie will create a new postcard for the set, bringing the total to 33.
$1,300 – We'll produce a digital wallpaper of three of the postcards.
$1,500 – Carie will use a silver or gold marker to give one postcard in each backer's set a personalized touch.
$1,700 – We'll produce a bookmark featuring artwork from the postcard set.
$2,000 – Carie will create a new postcard for the set, bringing the total to 34.
$2,300 – Backers will receive a second, different sticker.
$2,500 – Carie will create a new postcard for the set, bringing the total to 35.
$2,700 – Backers will receive a Reel Fun Studios magnet.
$3,000 – Carie will create a new postcard for the set, bringing the total to 36.
$3,500 – All packages of postcards will have a doodle from Carie and Dakota on them!
Risks and challenges
There are always risks with Kickstarter.
All of the artwork and graphic design is completed for this project. The only real work remaining on this project is the actual printing. This is the third Kickstarter by Reel Fun Studios, having already done a book and a coloring book, so we are familiar with the process and do not anticipate any problems.
Unforeseeable issues could always arise. The one that is most possible is that this postcard set could be immensely popular and result in an unexpectedly giant number of sets needing to be printed. This is could result in a short delay.
Regardless, we will keep all backers updated on progress. We will do our best to get everything to the printer with plenty of time for the July mailing date we have set for you all. <3
