So, what’s it about?
The Rise and Fall of Medical Kush Beach Club (working title) is a social commentary on the medical marijuana industry in its hey-day and its subsequent fall. The film chronicles the experiences of Sean Cardillo (Kush) and his Medical Kush Beach Club, California’s largest (over 100,000 members) medical marijuana dispensary since its opening in Venice Beach 2006, while navigating through federal legislation, police raids, and the capricious medical marijuana industry.
The Rise and Fall of Medical Kush Beach Club highlights extraordinary, albeit unconventional, patient-caregiver relationships, high-status and celebrity supporters such as Tommy Chong and Rob Van Dam, and the peculiarities of owner Sean Kush. Filmed over the course of five years, and including a combination of never-before-seen footage, news reports, and interviews, the documentary sheds light on the “highs” and lows of a high-profile medical marijuana dispensary.
When will the film be finished?
Our working deadline is June 2012, but depending on whether or not we reach our goal and the outcome of Sean Kush’s federal court case, we may not finish until, at the latest, August 2012. After sorting through over 1000 hours of content, our rough-cut is approximately two and a half hours long, and we’d like to see the film fit neatly into a ninety-minute package. However, there are still important stories that need to be interviewed for and included in this work.
Wait, what court case?
April 20, 2011 (very funny, officers), the medical board and police
raided the Medical Kush Dr. and the adjacent building the Medical Kush
Beach Club, confiscating property and detaining Sean Kush under
suspicion of operating a doctor’s office without a medical license,
money laundering, and intent to distribute / sell marijuana. At the time
no charges were filed and Sean was allowed to continue operation until closing in June 2011. On
November 13th, 2011 he entered a plea of Not Guilty after being charged with eight felonies. Sean is currently fighting
against these unlawful charges and we intend to film his court case all
the way through to the end.

What progress have you made so far?
We are in the post – production stage, currently, but we still have interviews that may need to be conducted. We have a few more weeks of post-production editing, and then we’ll need to transfer the film to sound design, color correction, and motion graphics for a polishing-off, provided no further interviews are necessary.
Ok, so you’re almost done, what do you need money for?
Professionals and contractors
When we first began this documentary, we didn’t realize the story would be so breathtaking. Once word got out about the nature of the film and its important message regarding medical marijuana, many fellow artists and professionals had a difficult time denying our petitions for assistance, and many are still working hard without normal – and deserved – pay. We’d like to use part of this money to make sure those who have devoted their energy, time, and expertise to this accomplishment are paid what they deserve for their continued commitment.
As we mentioned earlier, the film is still in dire need of polished motion graphics, titling, color correction, and sound design. We want to make absolutely sure that the presence and aesthetics of the film are in line with the remarkable story. A portion of the funds procured here will go towards these services.
There are still a few interviews we feel are important to this film. In the beginning, we were disappointed that certain potential interviewees declined participation due to the sensitive nature of the film. After watching the process and content of the film unfold, many have reconsidered and now wish to be a part of this monumental achievement. We feel their input is crucial to the story, even though our budget for interviews has been reached. Some of these funds will go towards interviewing for these incredible stories and adding them to the film.
In light of the current Occupy Wall Street movement, we would also like to bring in stories from the front on protestors’ views of the legalization of marijuana, or the current demise of the medical marijuana industry. We would like this film to be as up-to-date as possible.
What good is a brilliant documentary if no one sees it? Publicity and marketing are essential to making sure this message reaches as many people as possible. In this regard, we’ll need to secure the services of marketers, public relations people, and distributors. While we have a couple (literally, two) very knowledgeable marketers on staff, they both agree that without some more hands, we may not be able to reach our distribution or viewership goals. Part of this is due to the sensitive, and controversial nature of the content, and that it will possibly be rated R or NR. Additionally, we’d like to note that we plan to release this film through many of the on-demand platforms, such as Netflix and Hulu that are used by viewers.
The Medical Kush Beach Club was featured in over 30 local and national news stories from Fox News, and other sources. We will use a portion of the funds to license this footage to provide much needed credibility to this film and the cause it represents.
As with any movie, the process of making sure all of the talent have signed off and deal memos with producers, directors and contractors requires the services of entertainment lawyers. What will you do if you exceed your Kickstarter goal? First, jump out of our chairs and raise the roof! Second, we will continue to follow Sean Kush’s federal court case and create additional content for a re-release of the film with the updates.
