Seeking support for production & marketing of my 2014 calendar with paintings created in the window of a downtown business in rural Vt
My name is Reed Prescott or as local children refer to me "that guy from the paint store" but I'll get into that later. What I am seeking support in the amount of $2500 or more for is the production and marketing of my 2014 Vermont Landscape Calendar. We are looking to build a broader market for this product which will in the end help to support expenses which allows me to fill a retail space in a small Vermont downtown that is challenged in the current economy. I have made a living as a professional artist for over 25 years with numerous awards and accomplishments so imagine how shocked I was with results from a simple product my wife encouraged me to make during last years holiday season. A Calendar!
Simple right, but I had put the idea off for several years because when I started my career producing a calendar was costly and came with a short sales season. She pointed out that technology had changed all this and she was right. So I halfheartedly produced a piece that was printed at a local office supply business two days after Thanksgiving. It looked nice so I uploaded a picture of it to Facebook and immediately requests started showing up on the Wall. Over the next 6 weeks we sold over 500 copies.
Now with a model in place it is time to refine the process and reduce expenses and that's why I have started this Kickstarter campaign. It is apparent that we need to ramp up the production of the calendar and seek to build markets. In order to do this I need to have a proof calendar produced and marketing material ready by early June in order to take advantage of potential wholesale orders. Along with that I need to broaden my market and since my work is quintessential Vermont I believe it would do well in "Vermont Life Magazine" our state's tourist piece. This project works on many levels for my career. First is the revenue that comes from the direct sale of calendars helps to support my business. Second with 12 images on a product I have basically created a miniature catalog that I can now sell to a potential patron. It's also an attractive advertising piece where patrons can look at my artwork every day for 365 days, not to mention many of the original paintings are still available for sale.
But the story is bigger than this! It is not just a calendar of my paintings that makes your support special, but how I create my paintings. Better put, where I create my paintings! Each painting is painted from behind a large store front window of a downtown business in full view of the public. I grew up working in a "Main Street" store of a small Vermont village. As the recession hit and I watched numerous stores sitting vacant I decided I was going to do my part to support a healthy community and fill one of the vacant spaces.
One of the first things I did when I moved to the new studio/Gallery space was to set up a painting area in one of the two large store front windows where I would sit and paint. The community can track my progress from day to day as their travels take them by my shop. This was received so well that parents would relay that their children make them cross over to the gallery side of the street only to cross back in order to go to the Bank. I love the fist bumps I get through the glass and waves from friendly people I have never seen before. When kids come into my shop they are given a chance to climb into the window with me and feel what it is like to apply paint to a canvas much to the anxiousness of their parents. One day my wife and I went out during the Sunday Church service to act as child care. As soon as I walked into the room filled with toys, books, and such, a young man looked up at me and with wide eyes said "I know you.....your the guy from the paint store". A title I am now proud of.....
You too can follow my painting progress as if you are right here through the Prescott Galleries Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/?ref=tn_tnmn#!/pages/Prescott-Galleries/169774611921 Whenever I start a painting I open an album just for that painting. I paint with my camera at my feet and if the painting shows significant progress I document it with a photo that I upload to the FB album. Anyone who opens any of my painting albums can then track how the painting evolved with every click on the image. How cool is that?
I have even taken a few of the albums and used the photos to create a video that is uploaded to the internet. I can then use the videos for marketing and product add-ons like this video of "South Main Street Bristol Vermont"
I know what I offer goes way beyond just a calendar and with your support I can continue on my mission to inspire and develop a real creative economy. I love the saying "You can count the seeds in an apple..... but you can't count the apples in a seed" I am confident that what I do inspires others but my role is to not think of that and just paint. Paint daily, and over time it will have a benefit. So "Thank You!" for taking the time to consider this request and I hope you see the value in my simple calendar.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
My first challenge is to finish 3 winter scenes for the calendar images. After that it is more a timing issue- with modern technology the bulk of the project has a quick turn around time but "life happens" Over my career I have faced many challenges and taken all to a fruitful completion so I have no doubt this project will not follow the exact path I think but will reach the right destination. After all "If you want to make God laugh..... just tell Him your plan"
