The Key Art of Dreamfall Chapters

Posted by Red Thread Games (Creator)

This update was promised for June 24th; however, the key art was scheduled for June 25th. We apologise for the confusion.

Key art is the art of marketing campaigns and digital storefronts, including posters, banners, websites, wallpapers and trailers.

Ever since the Kickstarter last February, the key art we’ve used for Dreamfall Chapters has been early pre-production and work-in-progress art. Now that we’re getting closer to release, it’s time to replace the preproduction art with the final key art.

Over the past few months, our graphic designer Christoffer Grav has been busy creating a brand new look.

Here are the results. We hope you like it.

We're going with a more illustrated (and graphic novel) look for the key art, rather than the high-resolution 3D renders we've used previously. We feel this is more in line with the style and mood of our universe, and it's something that will also be reflected in parts of the game.

Banners will feature both of our main protagonists, Zoë Castillo and Kian Alvane. These characters share equal billing in the game, and we want to profile both as much as possible.

Pay close attention to the background elements: nothing has been left to chance, and nothing is without meaning.

The box art will of course also use variations of the key art. The examples below are still work in progress, and the various boxed editions will use slightly different art.

We will update our websites and social media channels today and tomorrow with the new key art. By Friday, the new profile should be in place everywhere.

A lot of you are probably going to ask for wallpapers and higher quality versions of this art: it's coming! Most of these images will be available as wallpapers — in all shapes and sizes — for backers of certain tiers.

We'd love to hear your feedback! Post your comments here on Kickstarter, on Facebook and Twitter, or join the ongoing conversation at our official forum.

We will back this coming Friday with another update. Until then,

May the Balance be with you!

Looks Fantastic! just what I was hoping for really ;)

    8. Natasa Sersen Popovic on

Maybe it could take an extra step away from the anime-ish Final Fantasy banners and go a bit further with the visible brushstrokes to make it more 'story' and 'deep' and 'artsy'? Just an idea. Otherwise, digging that sharp Kian eye, hoping Zoe could also have a bit more readable expression? I feel like girls tend to look bland like puppets. But that might be because I am a hetero female.

      Go team, can't wait!!!

      Balance hair :-O

      Hi there RTG!

I just LOVE what Christoffer Grav has done here! So well done and it really gives the style & mood of your universe... Well, of our universe actually, as we're all part of The Longest Journey! :) And by the way, the way Zoë's hair lies on the symbol of the balance is awesome! Could it be related to the Undreaming? Anyway just the idea of the artist to combine these two elements together is genius! Keep up surprising us with more goodies... ;)

Finally a box art that doesn't include a generic scruffy 30-ish white dude with a gun. Simple and beautiful.

Fabulous cover! I look forward to stage it in my room :).

Judging from Zoë's hairstyle, a close encounter with the Undreaming is in order...

I shall adore if I received the box of game with a cover and the BO the other one :D But I dream...

    28. Matt Kay

      Love the artwork!

I've always preferred traditional art over 3D art as box art or promotional material. The over use of boring 3D art as box art was one reason why I stopped buying physical copies of games.

      Thanks for the update!

Magnificent! I love it!!!!! Good style!!!

    32. Christine - Dream Traveller on

Love it! It's very reminiscent of the Dreamfall collector's edition, which will look lovely together sitting on my desk. :)

And absolutely, wallpapers would look lovely on my desktop too. :D

Nice. I have one request for the wallpapers: please make any writing, logo and such optional. I prefer image only backgrounds and don't need to remind me, what game it is from.

    35. Jessica Baynes on

      I love it!
      Great work :)

    36. Nathan Camp on

I think it is a great idea to use an illustrated style for marketing rather than 3d renders, it is much more professional and timeless looking. 3d renders may date but illustrations won't.

In addition I agree that it matches the mood of the game better.

I would like to see a comparison between this version and perhaps another which is less colour desaturated. I've associated the longest journey and Dreamfall with dream like qualities but also vibrant colour and I guess I'd like to see which suits the marketing material more. Either way I can't wait to get the wallpapers!

Liker det veldig godt! Får meg til å savne Den Lengste Reisen :)

    38. Raven Woods on

      Minimalistic yet it is gorgeous!

    39. Maxime Girard on

I like the last image with Zoe within the symbol of balance. I'd be curious to see her become the embodiement of science, while April Ryan the embodiement of magic.

    40. treehouseartist | Dream Traveller on

I love the graphic novel look as opposed to 3D renders, which tend to have a harder or more sterile look. Would be nice to see the Balance symbol being utilised in different ways on the various boxed editions. Like that loading screen with the window - I'd love to see that one being re-done for the box art.

    41. James Clayton on

Beautiful. If I had a concern it'd be that it doesn't really reflect the colourful landscapes I've aways loved about this series, (…) and that because of that it might not stand out so much on the Steam storefront.

      Generally though:
      1) Yes, bring on the wallpapers
      2) I wish I could upgrade to the boxed edition I couldn't afford at the time of kickstarter.

(Oh, also, speaking of Steam storefronts, I notice the one for Tale of Tales' Sunset is live already, eve though their kickstarter is still ongoing.)

    42. Chris on

      Awesome box art.

I appreciate digital distribution and all... but the artwork on music albums... game boxes... all gone.

    43. Maxwell Horse on

I like Zoe's look here. It's a bit closer to her original look in Dreamfall, which I preferred to the preliminary, colder model that was released when the Chapters Kickstarter was being pitched..

    44. nagi on

Zoe's hair on the top left looks almost like a phoenix. Anyway, truly gorgeous artwork!
