JOURNEYCON

Greetings, backers!

We have one word to share with you today, and that word is JOURNEYCON.

Of course, one word probably isn't enough to communicate what JOURNEYCON is (or will be) but you can probably guess. Or, y'know, keep reading:

We are hoping to gather fans from far and wide for a day of Dreamfall Chapters related activities in Oslo, Norway in November 2013 -- but before we do so, we want to see if this is something you, the community, our loyal fans and generous backers, actually want.

To gauge the interest, therefore, we've put together a signup form for the event at www.journeycon.com. If you're interested in travelling to Oslo and attending JOURNEYCON, add your email to our mailing list, and we'll keep you updated!

By signing up, you're not committing yourself to anything, but we'll be able to see how many of you are interested in joining us in Oslo for this event. And if there's enough interest, JOURNEYCON will be a reality!

So check out the link and add your name if you want to meet up with the developers and other fans and backers in Oslo later this year. Hopefully we'll see a lot of you there! I mean, here!

I would go but with no job right now, sadly, can't afford it.

Well, it's a damn shame that payment for JourneyCon is Paypal only. Aside from their habitual suspension of accounts (past shameful examples include charity fundraisers like http://www.somethingawful.com/news/paypal-fiasco-summary/ and KS projects like Xenonauts http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/10/09/enemy-known-xenonauts-vs-paypal/ and Grim Dawn http://www.grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php… ) Paypal also have a zero-tolerance policy for anyone with the temerity to use a network proxy, which excludes me (I've tried 3 times and got the "We can't process your payment right now" each time).
Given that RTG has the ability to accept Amazon Payments (which I've had no problems with so far) why wasn't this, or another payment processor, offered as an option? Aside from allowing those who can't use Paypal to participate, this would also "spread the risk" in terms of future account issues.

Would love to go, but probably won't have the time for it, and Oslo is not exactly very closeby either :p

Hell, RTG! I would love to go, but I'm a student with no job.

If by Europe you mean Sydney, Australia.. then sure! :P

Honestly, if I had the money to go to Europe, I probably would have spent it upping my pledge.

One suggestion for this or any other Dreamfall convention: since Chapters includes areas with large numbers of NPCs (e.g. Europolis) why not take the opportunity to record some NPC voiceovers from those attending? Since these would be short, generic responses (like you'd get from talking to a bystander in Baldur's Gate for instance), it shouldn't require too much time per person and it would allow for lots of variety. Subject to the practicalities of setting up a near-soundproof recording booth at or near a busy convention of course. ;)

    8. Jinx Osprey on

I'm totally fine with the idea of a dedicated convention and would definitely take advantage of the occasion to visit Oslo.
However, I'd like to point out that Journeycon sounds very wrong in french :p.

If you do one in the US, I would like to attend, but I won't be able to make it to Oslo in November.

People subscribe because they're interested, but that doesn't mean the time isn't horrible. I'm not a huge fan of the place either, but it's an understandable choice. But November? Terrible month for me.

    11. Libor - Dream Traveller on

Hope this thing happens despite me not being able to go on such short notice! If there's event like that next year though, I would do my best to be able to attend it (if someone else will go from Prague, like Rinu for example, we might join forces as fellow 'Europolis' citizens and travel there together :-) ).

    12. Helena on

Sounds cool, but Oslo is a long way to travel, even from the UK.

    13. Rasandes on

Så bra. I like it. :)

    14. Ninjy Tormented/OotG-KnCm/DrmTrvlr/WoOS on

It sounds like it might be fun, but it wouldn't be for me - the costs of travel/etc not to mention the logistics involved (for somebody who doesn't travel much and can't travel alone) makes it near-impossible. I'd love an internet livestream of the event, though. I might even be willing to pay a small fee for it (or you could ask viewers to donate as they watch). Something to consider?

    15. Wei Chen Mark Wang on

It's a nice idea but like majority of the non-EU backers/fans (or even people in UK listed below), it's too short of a notice to go to Oslo and party with you Norwegians. Besides, I dislike cold weather and Norway's tourism website shows the November would be in 33.2 F, that's too cold for this American.

    16. Red Thread Games Creator on

@mnihil: I'm not sure 'bizarre' is the right word. We have a large and very active community, we've never had a proper fan gathering, we're planning a reasonably small & intimate affair, and so far there's a TON of interest. Part of the reason for doing so is to be able to give people a sneak peek at the game and a chance to interact with the team, part of the reason is bringing all these fans together, and part of the reason is to give us a real incentive to deliver something KICK ASS for late November.

@enaktsb: What an odd comment. If by "money getting spent left and right" you mean "money spent on salaries, hardware and rent" you'd be right. Game development does cost money, and this is why the Kickstarter money is so important to us. It's paying for Dreamfall Chapters! And not for JourneyCon, which will need to be funded by ticket sales, of course. We don't plan on making any profit on that event -- we only want to give something back to the fans, and to arrange a fun and informative day with the developers here in Oslo.

So far, the signups are way, way, waaaaay above expectations, so it looks like this thing might actually happen. Wheee!

Hmm, Sounds interesting.. And only a bussride (and a change to another buss or tram or metro) and I can get there..
(So nice when things like that is in your own hometown)
Id defenatly try and get there.

    18. Maxwell Horse on

After reading Stew's message, I just now realized that the proposed date was actually November of THIS year. I definitely agree that this should be pushed back. I assume the game isn't going to be released this year anyway, so not only would an event planned for next year give people from outside the country more time to plan for such an event, but the "buzz" of the game release should help the event as well.

    19. Stew OotG Knight/Captain Bloodcoffee on

Nice idea, too short notice though.
If it was for next year then i'm sure you'd get a better turn out but november isn't that far away. With travel expenses and getting time off work etc I just won't be able to go and I think it'll be the same for most backers outside of Norway..

Interested but much would depend on cost. Clearly this convention cannot be free but Oslo itself is not a cheap place to stay - arranging a discount on hotel prices and maybe extending the convention to 2 days (making it more worthwhile to those travelling a long distance) would be a big incentive.
And yes, please try to get Sarah Hamilton there and hold a competition for backers to devise the most unpronounceable place names for her! (Changag-gag..changangri-what?).

    21. Tina Bryntesen - Dream Traveller on

@Benny, neither can I, but I am still a super fan! And at this point we need as many people as possible to sign up/show their interest so that it will actually BE a thing. Hopefully enough people can make it so that it will actually happen :)

    22. Benny Samuelsson on

Sounds great. I'm not sure I'm a good enough fan for something like this though. I loved the games and the universe but I couldn't tell you any dialogue straight from the head :)

    23. VondeVon on

Too far/expensive for *this* Aussie gal! I look forward to news/pictures though.

Ooooor, since I imagine this would cost some money to set up and host, you could possibly make it a VIRTUAL JOURNEYCON instead!

    24. treehouseartist | Dream Traveller on

Great idea! Hope the date is pushed back/forward a week though, but a great idea nonetheless!

    25. Shatners Bassoon on

I live in the UK so not a chance in hell, much as I'd give someone elses back teeth to attend :(

    26. Maxime Girard on

I'd come, but I live quite a ways away and I don't have money. I probably won't until I have a stable job or two. The best thing I can do is try to collaborate with Red Thread Games to try and accumulate fans of The Longest Journey / Dreamfall in the Province of Quebec to get together for a day or a weekend depending on how much time people have and the amout of things we could do during that time frame.

      What a bizarre idea.
Bizarre, for a game series consisting of two games.
Bizarre, for an independent game studio.
Bizarre, for a low-budget project (I still cannot fathom how the game is made for the money we're aware of, at all).
Bizarre, being on such a short notice and in a relatively "remote" area.

Ultimately, probably just a bizarre message. A developer inviting fans to come around (which, at 150-200 attendees is basically what this is but a bit bigger) sounds fun, but doesn't sound "convention" (and I also don't see proper convention in the future). But even if its a fun, and lucrative (which is what this would have to be) endeavour, the timing seems off. I can't wrap my mind around it - and perhaps a bit more comment on the why and the how would help matters.

    29. Markus R. Mosbech on

I'm definitely interested. Not sure if it's possible, though.

Denmark - Oslo by bus seems affordable and in a decent timeframe, but still a lot of unknown factors, hotel costs, content/length of con - im guessing its intended as a 1day thing?

      on

I'm definitely interested, though not sure if I'll be able to make it this year. I guess I'll get on the mailing list and see if I can make it. What will the weather be like in November? Cold or really cold?

    38. Narq on

Boy oh boy am I interested! Too bad I can't afford to fly all the way from here to there (and too bad I'm afraid of flying).

    39. Maxwell Horse on

I suspect that Rinu's response will be a common one. I love this idea. In fact, a long time ago I thought it would be neat if they held such Longest Journey-themed event. But personally I can't see myself taking such a big trip. Maybe if enough people fall into this category of, "Great idea, but I can't personally go," the event won't be deemed worth it.

But if you DO do it, you know what would be great? If you had some "celebrity appearances" by some of the voice actors, particularly Sarah Hamilton. I think fans would get a big kick out of hearing April Ryan's voice in person.

    40. Starla on

If I could, I absolutely would. I hope it is a huge success!

    41. Vojta Adalbert Čejka / Dream Traveller on

Stream would be great! (wink, wink)

    42. Andrew Snyder on

The timing doesn't work for me, sadly, but I hope folks that go have a great time. Maybe consider taping/doing a stream? I'd chip in a couple bucks via PayPal to watch.

    43. Rinu on

It's a great idea and I would love to come however the term is too early for me. Considering travel expenses, accomodation and everything, I need more time to sign up for this kind of event.
