Update #14: Europolis revealed

During the past couple of weeks, we've talked a lot about one of our two worlds. We've shown locations from Arcadia, our magical fantasy world, including street scenes from Marcuria, the capital city of Ayrede; exploration and gameplay in the magical Riverwood; and even concept art of a Tree Spirit.

But so far, we haven't shown anything from Stark, the world of science and order; our world in the year 2220.

That's about to change. Today, we're revealing one of our key locations in Stark, and that location is:

A vast European city-state covering the former independent nations of Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Belgium and the Netherlands. Its blackened, concrete tendrils reach as far north as the Baltic states, and as far south as Paris. Europolis is not just the dark heart of Europe; it is the filthy bowels and bloodied entrails of Europe.

We will have tons more of Europolis in the days ahead, including some brand new characters, screenshots and more lore. But today is all about our 'Europolis Revealed' video.

All the footage you are about to see is realtime, in-game footage, running in our prototype and using the Unity engine. We think you'll enjoy it.

Europolis looks great so far but I have to agree with Rendref down below that something about Zoe's face seems a bit off, granted an overhaul to better graphics of a character you've come to like a lot will allways make you nitpick. I remember feeling the same way when I saw April in Dreamfall, she didn't feel like April, even tho the previous TLJ April only had a few polygons and her face was basically a texture. Even so I think it might be the hair mostly with Zoe, Dreamfall Zoe had a much fuller hair that complemented her face well. This pulled back tight pony tail hair she has now in Chapters, I'm not feeling it tbh, you could try bringing some volume back into it. But I'm sure I can get used to the higher polygon Zoe as I did Dreamfall April. From the footage I've seen tho, seeing Zoe from a low angle as she looks up makes her look a bit derpy tbh. Think that might have to do with Chapters Zoe having a bit more angular face, chin and cheeks wheras Dreamfall Zoe has a much rounder face. Just my 2 cents.

Actually, perhaps the signs are part of what makes it look a bit retro. I like it, but perhaps there should be some more advanced tech as well (especially considering the recent real-world tech that is being developed nowadays, like Google Glasses, 3Doodler, Kiniect 2 etc), like interactive/responsive signs. I guess it would be tech that only the big companies would have though. I always liked how it's not just contrasts between Stark and Arcadia, but also contrasts within those areas.

However, I just love the concept art and the quality of the footage. Very well done, I'm curious to see more!

Fantastic this concept. I really like very much the idea of Europolis along with a Newport. Very dark atmosphere, thought would't like this future, lol. And I am very proud that my country ( Czech Republic ) is mentioned there. Just I have to agree with some other guys about Zoe's look. I miss the old one from Dreamfall. Guys please, make her more similar to that one whom we liked in a previous part. I am bit afraid how they gonna make April as well.

    4. Mikejames on February 21, 2013

I like the clear diversity in atmosphere between Stark and Marcuria this time around.
It should help in giving the transition between the two weight.

"Also - A vast European city-state covering the former independent nations of ...the Czech Republic ..." < --- I approve :D

    6. Friederike M. on February 21, 2013

I like the Blade Runner style! It has the touch of TLJ . Go on like this, this looks perfect! :)

      wow stark sure looks great.

Looks awesome! Makes me want to see Blade Runner again this weekend. :)

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain...

    9. Neo April on February 21, 2013

Yessss, greatings from Blade Runner. And I love Blade Runner :-))

    10. treehouseartist | Dream Traveller on February 21, 2013

@Simplex: It would be interesting to see if RTG tries to combine different languages in the signs. I think it would be only natural to show some signs (pun intended) of how the different languages have mutated by 2200

    11. Raebyn on February 21, 2013

Nice footage, thanks for showing! Some more people bowed down with grief, simply walking in their worn out coats would also be a "nice to have" - the umbrellas with straight people under them look a bit upper class to me, maybe they are - do upper class people up there also have rain tunnels now and then? I really like the combination of the cyberpunk and fantasy setting, so much potential, so inspiring. May RTG never run out of cookies and dreams.

The image actually is high-res and can be used as a background... Just right click it and select 'view picture' / 'view in new tab' or something like that...

    15. @delamer - Drachkin on February 21, 2013

      @ Rendref
You surely not one here, but I like her as she is :)

    16. Simplex on February 21, 2013

I noticed that the signs and neons are mostly German and English. Since according to you Europolis is partly located in Poland (and Poland is quite a large country, possibly larger than Czech Republic, Belgium and Netherlands combined) then I hope that some signs, or posters, will be in Polish. It would be a really nice touch. For Polish users. Of course, languages of other countries are welcome too :)

    17. Lucas on February 21, 2013

@Lee-m oh yes, high res background is a perfect idea!

Dreamfall chapters is starting to become a masterpiece :D
so fantastic to see it's progress !
I wonder if we'll get to see a futuristic prespective on some familier places in Europe..

    19. Andrew Snyder on February 21, 2013

Love the extra nuggets in the on-screen text: Bingo! branded dreams? The WATIcorp Urwatilla? What are these awesome things, and are they going to appear in-game?

Also, I remember it raining in Newport's urban hellscape in DF. I hope Zoe packs an umbrella this time!

Oh my God please change the face of Zoe, video starts with it and I am already scared to death. Please, is there anyone else who don't like it or am I the only one who cries here?

    21. Lee-m on February 21, 2013

Given the limited time there has been to work on this its amazing progress. I NEED that image in high res for my desktop :)

    22. Lewwy T - Dream Traveller on February 21, 2013

Stunning. What I particularly like is the density of the NPC's, a lot of games don't pay much attention to what everyone else is up to in the background

    23. stinusmeret on February 21, 2013

wait Europolis also spans my home country (Belgium)? Awesome :D
I also wonder if Europolis will have specific areas that are themed to the countries it encompasses?
Because that would really add to the immersion factor I feel :)

    24. Ninjy Tormented/OotG-KnCm/DrmTrvlr/WoOS on February 21, 2013

This is so wonderful. I was a little afraid you'd not give Stark the same level of love as you did Arcadia, but I'm happy that fear was completely ungrounded. Wonderful work. :)

    25. Stew OotG Knight/Captain Bloodcoffee on February 21, 2013

Wow, loving the Blade Runner-esque vibes in Stark!! Can't wait to explore it. :D

    26. @delamer - Drachkin on February 21, 2013

      @ Per
      LOL- the same here :)

    27. @delamer - Drachkin on February 21, 2013

Am I only one, who think Zoe looks like J.C. Denton? :)
      Nice city, BTW

At 2m10s into the video, was i the only one thinking Gunther Hermann & Anna Navarre from Deus Ex?

    29. Tomimt on February 21, 2013

Very Blade Runner indeed. Then again, I recall a couple of jabs towards BR in the TLJ as well.

    30. Gal Shemesh on February 21, 2013

      *looks! Forgot the s ;)

    31. Gal Shemesh on February 21, 2013

My god it look so vivid! Especially the movements of Zoë's eyes about the end of this clip. Can't wait, just can't wait to play it! :)

    32. Yuri on February 21, 2013

      Love that dark dystopian atmosphere.

"A vast European city-state covering the former independent nations of Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Belgium and the Netherlands..."
So what happened to Norway then? :) And will we be able to more fully savour the Europolis atmosphere by - say - visiting the bars and "dance halls"? (speaking as someone frustrated at not being able to have a closer look at Newport's bars in Dreamfall...).

    36. whitegreyblack on February 21, 2013

      I'm also reminded of Omikron.

    37. Lucas on February 21, 2013

gah, I love the updates and can't wait to see more locations from Stark! the only thing I can't get used to is new Zoë appearance... maybe it's just me being fussy but she doesn't look like Zoë from Dreamfall :( anyway big thank you for the Wonkers the Watilla edition, too bad it doesn't consist of printed map but I love it and pledged some of my savings :)

    38. James Clayton on February 21, 2013

Nice! I love Christer Sveen's art. Any chance of a highres version of that picture?

    39. jorlinn on Linux on February 21, 2013

Allright, this looks enticing (to play that is, not to live in mind you). It does look a bit too much 80 s to my taste. Still, the 80's was the age of punk, so that makes sense in a way.. The symbols used remind me more of the 30's though. Strange mish-mash...but I like it.

    40. Cyberbard | Shift Happens on February 21, 2013

      I'm speechless. This is FANTASTIC!

The best thing is that I'm actually convinced they can realise all of this, without spreading themselves too thin across the two worlds and their different locations. Because there is no combat (etc.) to take up all the development time. I'd say creating environments and models, along with story and puzzles are the four major pillars of development here. I'm positive the environments will receive a huge amount of love in this game!

Looks very much like the downtown areas in TLJ. "Inner Circle", was it? Oh, that's a reggae band :) Metro Circle.

    42. Maus on February 21, 2013

I always thought we (the Dutch) would go down the drain. :P
I really love the Cyberpunk and yet Blade Runner-esque vibe that's going on there!

    43. Leo on February 21, 2013

Very rich dystopian environment! Reminds me of Earth in the movie Avatar. A really nice contrast to the beautiful Arcadia! Very well done!

    47. Laila Eikeland Knutsen on February 21, 2013

The music is the same that played when you broke into the factory in Russia during Dreamfall.
And what a bleak future... glad I won't be alive to see it if that's where things are headed!

    48. Victor on February 21, 2013

Very nice art ! I would gladly make it my new desktop, if you don't mind posting a higher res version :)

    49. Matt on February 21, 2013

I might be wrong but the song used is from either Newport or Wati Corps right?

Either way, thank you you definitely are making me feel like I am pledging the right amount. Can you say how much PayPal is pledging at the moment?
