Update #14: Europolis revealed

During the past couple of weeks, we've talked a lot about one of our two worlds. We've shown locations from Arcadia, our magical fantasy world, including street scenes from Marcuria, the capital city of Ayrede; exploration and gameplay in the magical Riverwood; and even concept art of a Tree Spirit.

But so far, we haven't shown anything from Stark, the world of science and order; our world in the year 2220.

That's about to change. Today, we're revealing one of our key locations in Stark, and that location is:

A vast European city-state covering the former independent nations of Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Belgium and the Netherlands. Its blackened, concrete tendrils reach as far north as the Baltic states, and as far south as Paris. Europolis is not just the dark heart of Europe; it is the filthy bowels and bloodied entrails of Europe.

We will have tons more of Europolis in the days ahead, including some brand new characters, screenshots and more lore. But today is all about our 'Europolis Revealed' video.

All the footage you are about to see is realtime, in-game footage, running in our prototype and using the Unity engine. We think you'll enjoy it.

Fix Zoë!! And hell yeah to the beer brewery!!!

    2. symbiotics on February 21, 2013

@Eriksen they still have a lot of time to tweak her, for now it's just a placeholder, I'm sure we're yet to see the final version

    3. Chuck Payne l Dream Traveller on February 21, 2013

off topic suggestion... BUT Clearly you should add a 3 million stretch goal or start a new kickstarter for 'Bingo - BEER!' A Norwegian microbrewery that provides alcohol to the The Longest Journey enthusiasts!

Hey there - I would really like to see or hear something about good old Austria in a computer game - so please mention "former" Austria as well ;-)

    5. Julia Ray on February 21, 2013

This place looks nice but I hope there are places like where her home was. Very bright and everything is shiny. Nothing wrong with some of the future being bright and shiny!

Environment looks amazing! Only one issue, not sure if anyone's brought this up, but didn't the collapse make those types of flying cars we're seeing impossible? They talked in dreamfall of not being able to fly without wings, so that should mean no anti-grav powered stuff.

Really nice start, got that "Blade Runner" feel to it, very brooding and dark! Will we be seeing higher resolution textures on the buildings etc in the end game? almost all adventure games don't push the graphics to the hardware limits, with this being PC based game, are there any plans to push more to the limits with Dreamfall Chapters ?

    8. Eriksen on February 21, 2013

Her mouth used to slope up, now it slopes downwards, you don't change this as you age, nor does your lips become puffed (with age), unless you have them filled with silicon. Zoe's head shape, forehead, mouth, hairline, chin, cheek, eyes, nose... Zoe's everything(!) has changed. In other words not Zoe.

    9. Moirrey | Dream Traveller on February 21, 2013

I really like what Zoe looks like, but I think her eyes are still a little too cat-like. I really liked the big doe eyes she used to have. But other than that it's looking fantastic!

    10. Moirrey | Dream Traveller on February 21, 2013

Wow, that guy at 2:10 looks EXACTLY like Morpheus from the Matrix, at least to me anyway.

Great stuff guys, I'm really REALLY looking forward to this game!

I generally like Zoe's new face, though at the beginning she does look a bit odd. e.g. around 20s.
I think that's mostly a perspective issue as we're not accustomed to viewing faces at that angle and the lens appears to be quite a wide one.
The glimpse at 2.13 looks a more natural one but her eyes are a little close together from what I can see.

@Alejandro Re Magic breaking out in the midst of urbania.. think you might enjoy this link I posted earlier on the main comments section. Not quite unicorns and it's set in modern New York but really made me think of what might happen if pockets of Magic broke out in Stark - lifeless mundane objects coming to life...

It's a breathtaking CGI'd video that was on today's guardian website (a UK newspaper), originally created as a bachelor's degree graduation project by graphic design student Lena Steinkühler, from Dortmund, Germany...

I did like the old Zoe. Not saying that I'd be unhappy with any changes, but there is something about the current face, even in stills, that doesn't fit.

    16. James Clayton on February 21, 2013

Zoe looks like she's really coming on since the last video. Mainly just looks older now. I'm impressed.

    17. Cheyenne on February 21, 2013

I have to agree. I'm so excited about this game and was very happy to pledge towards it!! However, I've gotta agree with the other comments about Zoe's face. I didn't know it was supposed to even BE her, in all the promo materials you've put out so far. Her face now looks chubby, and apart from having dark hair I'd say she's totally unrecognizable as the same character. It wasn't until I read the pleading comments to change her that I realized it WAS her. I'm still excited to play of course, but she looks so unlike the character I came to know and love. It doesn't look like her at all.

Oh man... This looks goood...! Nevered cared much for Arcadia. Stark is where the magic happens!

    21. treehouseartist | Dream Traveller on February 21, 2013

@Jamil: It could be a private city called Hangar ;). Seriously though, it would be really cool to have some older buildings to contrast the dark ones. That would make the dark seem even darker. I'm really looking forward to see all the things RTG comes up with during the next couple of years.

I would love to see a unicorn, or a fairy riding a unicorn or a pegasus or whatever magical being you want breaking with its beauty by just one second among the cyberpunk gloomy crowd. I mean, the kind of sight that only one can see in videogames and cinemas. As for the demo, it is perfect. Good work Red Thread Team

Europolis is astonishing, it makes me wanna play the game right now, but Zoe's face is weird, as if she have had a plastic surgery that went really wrong. She gives me the creeps, eewk!
      +1 for old Zoe

    25. Marta Pilliu | Dream Traveller $6.13 on February 21, 2013

It feels like the old Newport in TLJ: dirty, decadent, polluted and absolutely corrupted. And that's AWESOME! The game looks stunning already, I'm sure we'll say "wow!" on November 2014.

    26. symbiotics on February 21, 2013

that looks amazing! the lighting effects of this engine are some serious stuff! congratulations guys!

    27. Jamil Ismaili | Eternal Dreamer on February 21, 2013

@Treehouseartist That's an awesome concept (the Landmark graveyard) - Love it !

    28. Red Solar on February 21, 2013

Interesting looking place. Nice design and background music. I have to agree with the previous comment about Zoe's face. Something seems off with it. I'm thinking the eyes but not sure. Anyways, great job guys!

    29. Jamil Ismaili | Eternal Dreamer on February 21, 2013

Looking at that huge version of the Stark street above it's comforting to know that in the future Susan Boyle will have a metro station and district named after her (possibly 67 of them !)

    30. treehouseartist | Dream Traveller on February 21, 2013

Would be cool, just to give a sense of the different cultures, to have a kind of landmark graveyard. Buildings and sculptures from the different former countries stored in a giant private hangar, city. Would look bizarre and scary. But I guess in Europolis the world heritage policies have gone out the window a long time ago!

    31. Paul Ulrick on February 21, 2013

Real nice, wondering if we'll have some of the more cleaner Stark places like Casablanca also? I Like the variety in Stark. :p

Also yeah, i also think previous Zoe looked better. :/

    32. Chad Armstrong on February 21, 2013

I always loved the scenes from Stark, preferred them over the Arcadia locations.

I wonder, what happens to the Nordic countries in 2220?

    35. Stuart on February 21, 2013

OMG @ that screenshot of Stark. As a major cyberpunk and Blade Runner fanboy, that has intensified my excitement. :)

    36. Raebyn on February 21, 2013

@Alex Right click on the picture and "View Image", there you have the huge version. :-)

    37. Alex Hempel on February 21, 2013

Looks like you're cruising for seven figures there :D

Can we please, please, pretty please get a wallpaper size version of the Stark picture? :)

    38. Daniello on February 21, 2013

I agree that Zoe looks totally wrong here, but the rest of it ... wow!

    39. Glenn H. on February 21, 2013

WOW! This video of Stark has exceeded all of my expectations! The gloom, the neon, the crowds(!!!) -- it's an absolutely stunning vision of cyberpunk dystopia.

    40. Geoffrey Scott Cavender on February 21, 2013

      Best $50 ever spent?
      I think so.
      I cannot wait for this game to come out even though it'll be all the way in November of next year ;_;
I hope it ends up as good as it looks like it'll be!

    41. trisenk on February 21, 2013

My country in a Dreamfall game... :D
...playing the part of "bloodied entrails" and "rotting corpse" - :(

      Kidding :)

    42. James Clayton on February 21, 2013

Huh. Refreshed the page and for some reason the CSS didn't load. Turns out that image *is* hi-res. Thanks guys!

    43. treehouseartist | Dream Traveller on February 21, 2013

Speaking of Blade Runner, waiting for my beautiful new Blade Runner Blu-Ray digibook. Dang, that just made me want a Dreamfall Chapters digibook even more!

    44. Vicenç Cortés Olea on February 21, 2013

I'm proud to be part of this :) this video shows that you are working hard and I think nobody will be deceived with this third episode of all this great story.

It remainded, like a lot of people has said, Blade runner future. It's cool!

    45. Shanny Zutox Lix on February 21, 2013

In game footage looks absolutely stunning. I'm happy to say I come from Norway where this is being made :)
I do however have to agree with a lot of people when it comes to Zoe's looks. She doesn't fit in at all and she kind of reminds me of a glossy zombie like figure. I guess at the moment the actual game is more important, but you really should polish up or replace her model at some point before releasing the game :)

    46. Stephan Vandenborn on February 21, 2013

Damn, this has such a great atmosphere to it. So I wonder a few things. We can freeroam around these streets in a GTA way (minus all the interaction with cars maybe), to investigate to solve puzzles (or puzzles in some of thouse flats ?)
