Update #14: Europolis revealed

During the past couple of weeks, we've talked a lot about one of our two worlds. We've shown locations from Arcadia, our magical fantasy world, including street scenes from Marcuria, the capital city of Ayrede; exploration and gameplay in the magical Riverwood; and even concept art of a Tree Spirit.

But so far, we haven't shown anything from Stark, the world of science and order; our world in the year 2220.

That's about to change. Today, we're revealing one of our key locations in Stark, and that location is:

A vast European city-state covering the former independent nations of Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Belgium and the Netherlands. Its blackened, concrete tendrils reach as far north as the Baltic states, and as far south as Paris. Europolis is not just the dark heart of Europe; it is the filthy bowels and bloodied entrails of Europe.

We will have tons more of Europolis in the days ahead, including some brand new characters, screenshots and more lore. But today is all about our 'Europolis Revealed' video.

All the footage you are about to see is realtime, in-game footage, running in our prototype and using the Unity engine. We think you'll enjoy it.

What I'm wondering is will Red Thread publish the novella book, the lore book and the art book separately for people who haven't participated in the Kickstarter. I'm a high school student and I didn't have that much money at the moment, so I pledged $25, but I would like to buy the boxed edition and the books too when the game comes out.

The city looks pretty awesome. I wonder if there'll be only Europolice in Stark, or we'll get to visit other places too?

    3. Emmo on

I still can't get over how good that place looks in the video. I'm really hyped.

    4. Vojta Adalbert Čejka / Dream Traveller on

      @ Mary

Thanks for clearing that up! I've just started my second playthrough of Dreamfall, so I'll refresh my memories of the (brilliant) music!

    5. kJones on

I have to agree with it not feeling european... but I'm sure you'll get that right. A couple buildings with old architecture, maybe a cathedral repurposed as a nightclub and some bad guy's den in it's towers.

As to the old/new Zoe discussion, why not let the players chose like in the new devil may cry? People could play as the one they prefer and you get to make more people happy for the additional work of sculpting one face. Adds good will to the campaign :)

We just dropped by $10K... looks like one of the $10K backers dropped down or dropped out. =/ there used to be 2 of them...

      Looking good. :)

Impressive! I almost expected to see a noodle stall where someone is told "He say you Brade Runner"!

    9. Omri Fima on

europolis is a bit too "generic cyberpunk city". i think adding a little bit of European clues to the architecture will make it much more fabulous.

    10. Moirrey | Dream Traveller on

I really hope Zoe is made to look more like Zoe. I know this has been said many times, but just a few little changes are needed.

I already made my suggestions about what I think needs to be changed so I'll leave it at that. :) Hopefully we can all reach some kind of happy compromise, if nothing else.

      @ Votja

The music in the video is actually from one of the later levels in Dreamfall: TLJ.

sorry for my last comment hahha i was listening to other stuff while the vid was playing, gomen..

awesome vid by the way, its looking perfect

Don't remember if I commented on this yet.. but Stark looks amazing. I love the real time presentation. It looks just as interesting to explore as Arcadia :).

Do bear in mind RTG, that for Europolis to look properly seedy and sleazy, players need to be able to see first-hand what's inside all those bars and clubs...

Awesome vision, I like how the two worlds have such contrast now.
Unrelated but @RTG I love the Munch-inspired poster, can you give me info on it? =)

    17. Vojta Adalbert Čejka / Dream Traveller on

So cool to know my country is a part of your brilliant world! And I really like the music - is it in-game or just a random video soundtrack?

    18. MusicSweetly on

The people walking around with umbrellas in the rain remind me of that scene from Resident Evil in Tokyo. I keep expecting some monster to emerge from the middle of the crowd. The city itself reminds me of the nightlife from Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Not sure why yet lol

Europolis looks great, I can't wait to see it in game!! Also, now that we have The Longer Journey (*squeal!*) I hope we get to conclude Damien's story. That is the one of the many storylines that has been bothering me since the last game.

Just read the article at RPS:

So Europolis is heavily influenced by Berlin, I like that. If I had to come up with a Berlin of the future, I would have thought of a Bauhaus/Art Deco-style Metropolis, though:
But on a closer look I can definitely see a nighttime Kottbusser Tor in all its fascinating ugliness in the Europolis design, haha.

I suppose it depends on since when Europolis has been this gritty sinkhole - since 100-200 years already or only since the Collapse 10 years ago. In the former case it would be unlikely to have the city have a very majestic, beautiful architecture like in Metropolis, so the Europolis as shown here is probably a lot more realistic.

Oh, and I think Zoë looks amazing in this screenshot:

    25. Zdenek "Alcarmo" on

Cool!!! We just achieved 1´000´000 Huzzzaaah! :-D

In real life, you get a megapolis as cities grow together, merge, and become one. So in a city like that, you could expect to find almost anything from any country or culture. Europolis is not so impossible, given enough time.

    27. Oriane MAILLY on

I love this contrast! You are so good in magic world that in technologic world!

    28. Sebastian Hosche on

      "Bruno's Brauhaus" - Haha, I'm loving it!

    29. Ines Silva on

I hope we'll get to revisit Venice!

    30. Ina on

Just watched the video for the third time. Love it and can't wait to go to there myself! Traum Raum - very German indeed, haha. (Quite glad that I won't live to see my country turn into this, though.)

I agree with some others here, though, that this Europolis looks just like a seedier version of Newport. I think it'd add a lot to the atmosphere to have the place have a more distinctively European look, e.g. with a more (futuristically) socialist and/or neoclassical architecture. At least for the "older" buildings. I loved about Casablanca that it still had its Arabian flair despite clearly being a city of the future.

But I stop now as to not sound like a nitpicking fankid ;) Great job, can't wait to see more!

PS: As for Zoë, I completely agree with Marta and Bettina, but also with the comment about the "uncanny valley" - but please, guys, they've just started, give them some time!!

    31. Raven Woods on

Always loved Stark in TLJ moreso than the Stark Dreamfall (thought that was really good too). Really like the vibe you guys are going for with Europolis. Reminds me a lot of Portland! Seriously, it looks cool. Keep the contrast of the both worlds up! And make sure you make both as meaty. Don't just focus on Arcadia please (unless I guess if the story requires so).

Awesome preview, I absolutely love Europolis look, maybe add a bit of old europe feeling to mix things and make the state-city feel more european, but it's really very good, bladerunner feeling = good.
(remind me of the old french rpg Berlin XVIII setting ^^)

Also like a lot the new Zoe, I immediately recognized her without any hesitation, look like a "irl human zoë" and I seriously can't wait to see how you did my favorite character of all time April.
Keep up the good work you impress me and I don't regret my pledge.

Thank you Red Thread, keep up on making us dreaming.

    36. Valiah on

Europolis looks great! I'm just blown away at how good everything looks and how much has been created already. If this is early prototype footage, I can't wait to see what it will look like when all the kickstarter funding has been put to use.

I think Zoe looks great. I instantly knew it was her. Her face has been updated, but it's still very much recognisable. She looks a little paler and her cheeks more sullen (making her cheekbones more noticeable), which I believe is fitting for someone who has been in a coma since we met her last. And the stud suits her. :)

    37. Guillaume - WereSheep of the Dreamers

I love this artwork. May I request to RTG more artworks for the next upgrades. I think it's catchier than a video for people who are not already fans, and it's spread further accross the web. I've already seen this one on game site, and others updates are only relayed if there are pictures too.

    38. Sammie on

I agree with others that Zoë needs a bit of tweaking. Its her eyes/nose/lips/forehead/cheeks/hair that need just SLIGHT tweaking. Now she looks like zoe went to the plastic surgeon in The Secret World, the character models look so similiar. They need more naturality, more of a "life" in their eyes, less plastic.

    39. Giorgos Chrysikopoulos - Dream Traveller on

@Mirage: what kind of "contrast" do you see? The Stark of DF: Chapters seems MORE like the Stark of TLJ (Europolis and Newport seem very much alike). What contrasts with BOTH of them is the Stark of Dreamfall! (but I'm ok with it, since we can just say that in Dreamfall we simply saw the best of Stark (Casablanca and Japan). Also, if you take issues with the population of big cities, did you also wonder about Newport's population? Because it was also a very densely populated city covering a huge area. And on the other hand, we can definitely assume that there will be more bright and less dense areas inside Europolis, like Venice was for Newport. Finally, you're right about the reunification, but I think the presence of magical races will more than make up for the imbalance! ;-)

    40. Mirage_GSM on

I'm a bit worried about the contrast between the Stark of TLJ and this one...
Besides have you given thought to the masses of people that would populate a city of thousands of km²? That would be billions! Please consider scaling that back to something a bit more realistical.
I also wonder what will happen when a Stark like that will eventually remerge with Mercuria. The Mercurian peoples will be but a minuscule fraction of the population of the new/old world...

    41. Cyril Cheney on

What I'd like ton know (ingame, not now !) is what happened between the Dreamfall Zoe and the nose-piercing Zoe. She seems to be a darker person, I hope there's going to be an explanation ;)

      mouseman on

      Nice footage!

It left me wondering, though, because even if TLJ and Dreamfall had dark cities, there were also light and life in them (and humour). So are we just talking about different cities or different approach to Stark altogether?

I'm a little bit worried about this ending up too dark or hopeless. The previous games had a good mixture going on, try not to lose it! Also this looks a lot more futuristic than the previous games, perhaps? I always thought the cities in TLJ and Dreamfall were so nice because they were set in the future, but they were instantly recognizable and somehow familiar..

But this is just first footage, keep up the good work and I fully trust you to make a product that makes us all proud!! :)

Europolis looks extemely cool! Stark has been my favorite world both in Longest Journey and Dreamfall. Looking forward to the play-through tonight!

It looks great, but it seems a lot like Venice, around metro circle and Mercury theater. Given that it's in another continent, can you "localize" it a bit?

    49. Zdenek "Alcarmo" on

To be honest I was so impressed by beauty of Arcadia that I almost forgot the existence of Stark - shame on me! :)
But here we are - new city of our future world of science - and thank you for putting my home country Czech republic as part of it - YAY! ;) looks really nice :) about Zoë´s look that´s disscused more than ever before - I definitely fell in love Zoë from Dreamfall, she was so beautiful, so lovely and so amazing and her voice as it was kinda shock for me to see her new first I thought it´s the new heroine I´ve read about some time ago....
anyway this is new Zoë and we all knew she will be drastically changed as Ragnar announced...apparently not only mentally changed though...
well, if there´s possibility to change her look, please do it quickly cuz I´m starting to get used to it ;-)

btw: does it mean that Zoë was brought back from coma when we can see her in Europolis? I´m more than happy about that thought :-)

    50. Victor "Dream Traveller" Buttaro on

@Marta Pilliu Comparing April from TLJ to April from Dreamgfall is not the same thing. First April had aged 10 years between the two games, so there was bound to be some change. Also technology changed making is possible to produce better in-game models. So they were able to more fully realise April in Dreamfall.

Now the technology is even better, so it should be even more possible to produce a version of Zoe that looks like her Dreamfall counterpart box/promotional art but more "real" new Zoe certainly looks better in-game but she looks so good that she comes off looking like a new person.

Case in point. Imagine someone was going to cosplay Zoe in real life. You have people who happen to look a lot like her and some who wouldn't. You might not get an exact real life counterpart but you might get someone close enough to have a really good representation. For example see below

Game technology has improved enough that designers can create a close to real life representation of old Zoe in the new game.

How well does new Zoe pull off old Zoe? :)
