Update #11: Mac & Linux versions are GO! New video update!

Last night, we reached our FIRST stretch goal, Apples & Penguins, which means that there will be Mac and Linux versions of Dreamfall Chapters! Hurray!

Pledgers will be able to choose between the PC, Mac and Linux versions for their digital downloads, DVD copies and USB keys, as soon as the Kickstarter campaign wraps up.

As promised yesterday, today we provide more details about our next stretch goal, The Loremaster:

Secrets of The Loremaster

The world of Arcadia exists in parallel and perfect balance with ours. It is a world of magic and chaos, a world that acts as a counterweight to the world of science and order. The Balance between the twin worlds is watched over by the Guardian, who channels the energies of order and chaos between Arcadia and Stark, our world.

One of the grandest cities of Arcadia is Marcuria, capital of Ayrede, a nation in the Northlands. For centuries one of the grandest sights of Marcuria was their Great Library, home to tens of thousands of ancient tomes of lore, magic and history, parchments and documents and stone tablets dating back thousands upon thousands of years, back to the time before the Great Divide between Arcadia and Stark.

Ten years ago, Marcuria was attacked by the barbarian Tyren armies, and they burned down and destroyed much of the city -- including the library. Many great works were lost, but the Sentinel priests were able to hide away their most precious books. The Tyren invasion, thankfully, did not last long. From across the western ocean came the Azadi. They drove away and exterminated the Tyren, liberating Marcuria.

Or so its people believed.

Soon, however, the Azadi began to impose their own rule on Marcuria and the Northlands. Their strange faith did not leave room for magic, or magic texts, and so they gathered all the books they could find and burned them in public, before asking the Sentinel priests to renounce their beliefs in favor of the Azadi Goddess.

Some tomes and documents were still hidden, however, and some were brought safely out of the city, where they remain.

In Dreamfall Chapters, you will be able to recover these lost books and bring them to the Grand Library which is even now being rebuilt, in secret, by the growing resistance to the Azadi rule. Once returned to the library, these books and documents can be studied and read, and players can learn more about the lore, peoples, geography and history of Arcadia, about the Balance, the Divide, and about the past and future of the twin worlds.

Many of these texts are hidden and may be difficult to find. Players will need to explore and be observant and vigilant to discover them all.

And finally, a new video update!

In which Dag, Martin and Ragnar speak about how we will make Dreamfall Chapters accessible to those who haven't played The Longest Journey or Dreamfall, along with those who may have forgotten what happened in the previous games.

For those of you without six minutes to spare, the highlights of the video (spoiler alert!) are:

  • The announcement of an interactive comic-book that will retell and recap the story of both The Longest Journey and Dreamfall. This really cool interactive comic will be a stretch goal, and we'll announce more details very soon!
  • And the guys reveal that they will be hosting a LIVE play-through of Dreamfall: The Longest Journey this coming Friday. They will play the game from beginning to end (unless they pass out from exhaustion) and offer commentary, reply to questions and interact with the audience. The time and details will be announced in the next couple of days!

@Patrick: Art GIRL! We're so lucky to have the lovely and talented Rikke Fjeld Jansen ( onboard for these awesome stretch goal illustrations. And I have a feeling they'll make it onto some t-shirts in the near future...but you did NOT hear that from me.

    3. RJSebastian on

Are you going to make the playthrough a permanent video to be watched?

    4. Red Thread Games Creator on

      @Morgan Langley: For sure!

    5. Red Thread Games Creator on

@Mats-André Nykrem: That's something we MAY be willing to do if we reach our $2 million stretch goal, The Longest Journey Home :-)

    6. animaniac on

I wish they made a 3-stooges like introduction for these 3-people videos...

    7. Johannes 'Waldgeist' Rebhan on

For anyone that tries to play through The Longest Journey: Use your graphic card tool and force Antialiasing. That way the 3D rendered models are smoothed and blend much better with the smooth 2D backgrounds. It's a much better experience.

I just finished TLJ again on saturday-sunday night and started dreamfall the next morning... :p

@Luke Dickinson: We will use TwitchTV, and the event will be recorded for posterity (and possibly for blackmailing the participants, who will without question be so exhausted by the end of it that there's no telling what they might say or do).

    10. advmal on

No butt-scratching this time, Ragnar! :)

    11. Oriane MAILLY on

I dream of this library!!! Very good idea! Thanks for your work!!!

    12. Luke Dickinson on

Thanks for the update! I'd like to echo a couple of the requests in the comments, those of us being able to have all three installs available for digital download (I game on both my PC and Mac these days), and that a "director's commentary" version of your Friday playthrough would be a great thing to offer backers who cannot watch the event live. Twitch TV should offer you the option to host the video for a while? Perhaps you could record the session and offer it up as a download on a file sharing service? Would be a really great thing to see! Thanks guys! :)

    13. Mats-André Nykrem on

Make a live play through of The Longest Journey too!!!

    14. Johannes 'Waldgeist' Rebhan on

Yay for directors Let's Play of Dreamfall :D

I'd also like to take a moment, and point out that it's quite odd that you're making us pick one version. But I'd like to go one further and say that, since you're using a cross-platform engine, it would imply that almost all of the game content is going to be shared between versions (with only some small differences in the binaries, which by all accounts should be the least amount of data, compared to the rest of the game content). Surely it's not such a stretch of the imagination to have a single release compatible with all three platforms? It would be much more convenient for everyone. As for digital downloads, I can't imagine you'd enforce a single platform, although that's what your messages thus far seem to imply. You really need to spend some time and clarify this (or work it out yourselves if you're still uncertain).

Would you consider telling some back story about how the game was made when you play it online on Friday? Some problems you had during the development, what you enjoyed and what you didn't. Would be interesting to hear!! :)

    17. Stephen "Stoibs" D

Both the interactive graphic novel and the playthrough will be great to remind us what happened 6+ years ago. Though I imagine most of will have re-downloaded these and plan to play through them again anyway :P.
This will be uploaded somewhere and not just live streamed right? Cause you know - Worldwide timezones.

    18. Patrick on

Just wanted to chime in to say I am loving these fantasic drawings in the last few updates. Props @ art guy! :)

The actual news is pretty allright as well ;)

    19. Tomimt on

Ooh, live playthrough. I like that.

Hopefully the decision OSX / Windows (also Linux) download can be done and changed.
I personally switch VERY often between the two systems.

    21. ostubash on

I'll definitely drop in on that just to hear some of the commentary hahah should be interesting.

      Mark R. on

Do I ask for the Mac version (the machine I use at work) or Windows (where I play most games) .... I can't have both digital downloads?

      Gernot Ottowitz on

As much as i would love to see the playthrough live, i'm already invited to a party and cannot justify ditching that for a geeky let's play ;) (as awesome as that might be).. please try to make it available to watch later.. pretty please?

    24. Missing avatar

      Nick Logan on

Why do we have to choose which version we want and not get access to all three?

    25. Erika Eby on

I think the playthrough is a BRILLIANT idea. Both for getting new people involved and generating more interest in the project. I can't wait to find out when it'll be. I'm in the US, so depending on the times I might not be able to be there for all of it, but I will definitely drop in.

Also, thanks for more info about the Loremaster stuff. The more I hear about it, the more excited I get.

The playthrough sounds neat, could you please record it for watching later on? I guess I will be working through friday... :(

    27. APODionysus on

The LP sounds amazing. @RedThreadGAmes, will you be hosting the video on Youtube or elsewhere after the initial live portion? I work on the weekends, since I work in a restaurant, so certainly wont be able to be there to watch it live... but would love to watch it at my leisure later.

    28. KHH on

Sounds good, I am very much looking forward to reading those books and discussing the contents.

    29. Cruel_Crow on

Is it possible to place Windows, Mac and Linux installers on the same DVD? 'Cause most space is usual taken by models, textures, animation and so on, which are common for all platforms, while the compiled code itself shouldn't bee too heavy.

      Julian on

Awesome, a playthrough with comments by the creators would be something I'm going to watch.

    31. Laila Eikeland Knutsen on

      First reaction: CROW!!!
      Second reaction: Hey... books!!
Third reaction: Bookburners?! May all of their left shoes disappear!

Thanks for the info about the library and lore that might be available. I'm always very happy for games with a solid lore behind them. It will be exciting to see if that stretch goal is reached (pleasepleaseplease) and how the library will look. Thanks for keeping us a part of the process!

    32. Piotr Pierzchał on

Like DVD commentary, but live! Awesome!

    33. Eric Pipedream Leisy on

I've played Dreamfall about 16x through now, but I would love to see the developers playthrough with commentary! As a US resident, what time would this playthrough take place aprox? Oh, and of course, now I read the last line that says you will release the time and details in the next few days. Over zealous. Cheers mates, really nice to see the updates.

    34. Christian Klass on

Thanks for the nice update. Wondering: How can I get all three OS versions? :-)

    35. Maxime Girard on

I definitely want to see this live playthrough, even if I've already played it twice! Especially if it's by the devs. I should probably watch the video now :)

    36. Vicenç Cortés Olea on

Sorry... I wanted to write thing, not think... :P

    37. Vicenç Cortés Olea on
