Update #7: Stretch goals revealed!

We're fast approaching our original $850,000 goal and our first week on Kickstarter! To celebrate this fact we're revealing our first three stretch goals.

These goals include the much-anticipated Mac and Linux versions at $900,000, represented here via our old friend Wonkers and some new toys!

We're also revealing a little teaser for our ultimate stretch goal. The $2 million mark will introduce The Longest Journey Home.

Exactly what that last one means, we won't reveal quite yet. We want to get a little bit closer before we'll let the secret out of the bag, but feel free to speculate in the comments!

Here, then, are our first three stretch goals:

  • $900,000 - Apples & Penguins: Mac and Linux versions of Dreamfall Chapters. Pledgers will be able to choose which version of the game they want to download, and to receive on DVD and/or memory stick
  • $950,000 - The Loremaster, which includes the Great Library of Marcuria (rebuilt in secrecy, of course), a fully-voiced librarian character, and tons of books, documents, ancient parchments and tomes of lore in-game for players to read, explore and dig into!
  • $1,000,000 - A Longer Journey, which allows us to create new locations, characters and side stories, adding great depth to the world, additional gameplay and new dialogue, lore, magical creatures...and some cool surprises! Check back later for more information about this stretch goal!
Beyond $1,000,000 lies many more mysteries, and we will announce additional stretch goals as soon as we reach our first one -- including, of course, more information about The Longest Journey Home!

If everyone ups their pledge by 100$ we would already be at 2mill, but that is probably a bit optimistic :)

"$900,000 - Apples & Penguins: Mac and Linux versions of Dreamfall Chapters. Pledgers will be able to choose which version of the game they want to download, and to receive on DVD and/or memory stick" so... the wording on the above stretch goal has me a bit concerned. The goal states (or at least I interpret it as) we get to choose only one version for the download and only one version for the dvd/memory stick. It makes sense for the download version since bandwidth isn't free but for the hard copy version of the game they could just include all 3 versions on the same disc (which is my hope). I switch between linux and windows on a regular basis and have no idea which one I'll prefer once the release date comes around or several years down the road after the game comes out. I would think that for ease of disc duplication and printing that all would be included on the disc/memory stick but I just wanted to make sure.

Some of my speculations for TLJH:

      1. A sort of database, or encyclopedia about the TLJ universe
      2. A continuation of the story in some form other then a game, like a comic book. Maybe bridging the gap between TLJ and Dreamfall?
      3. A DLC for the game

I definitely don't think it's a remake, although I wish it was. It's absolutely painful to play TLJ nowadays. I have to sit far away from my monitor so I don't get a headache from the blurry graphics and the massive aliasing. It's almost unplayable :(

    4. Stephan Cho on February 15, 2013

The Longest Journey Home = expansion to the base game starring April?

    5. Deceiver on February 15, 2013

Reach 2 million in 22 days.. let's see, that means we need at least around 55 000 dollars a day. That is doable!

    6. Anthony Coddington on February 15, 2013

I also think it would be best to allow people to download all 3 versions as is usually the case with multiplatform games these days (especially with the Linux version as many people don't run it full time and might want it solely to avoid rebooting so much). Obviously it probably makes sense for one version on the physical copies for space reasons (with the others downloadable).

    7. Giorgos Chrysikopoulos - Dream Traveller on February 15, 2013

@Sergio: we don't yet know all of the stretch goals. ;-)
Also, localizations is something usually done by the local distributors, that is true even for the previous two games (that's why GoG and Steam only have the english version, they don't have the rights to the localizations) so that could happen closer to release, if local publishers show interest in the game (and the bigger the kickstarter the bigger the "buzz" and the interest will be) and make agreements with RTG for dubbing and publishing the game.

    8. omgmrtea on February 15, 2013

C'mon guys! Update your pledge! I certainly did! If not for this game, for what else???

    9. RoyMartin on February 15, 2013

@Anthony - yeah, +1 for orchestral soundtrack! I'm starting to fear these stretch goals, they make it impossible not to up my pledge!

I would love to see a tablet version, the movement mechanic seems even better to use with a touch screen.

    11. Sergio Giustri on February 15, 2013

Oh... I'm really disappointed! I love the Longest Journey saga so I'll rest a backer of this project; but EFIGS support not in stretch goals.... is illogical! I have played the first 2 chapter in Italian... I can't play in english... really sad.

frankly I just hate reading in video games, these kind of things really pisses me of in adventure games, just had a urge to share you guys.

    13. Anthony Coddington on February 15, 2013

One thing that would be really nice as a stretch goal would be a fully orchestral soundtrack. I believe the one in Dreamfall, while absolutely fantastic, is sample based though the information on about Leon Willett might be wrong here - it certainly sounds better than any other sampled based soundtrack I've heard.

    14. RPRezo on February 15, 2013

This secret is pure awesome evil. If it turns out to be a reimagining of the original after all - I would double or even triple my pledge. But until I'm sure what it is - I'll play it safe, thank you very much.

    15. Lera on February 15, 2013

@Rinu nice idea! but better to add little rubber ducky toy to some boxed editions as surprise gift. You open the game.. and there is rubber ducky!

    16. Giorgos Chrysikopoulos - Dream Traveller on February 15, 2013

@Julien: It's definitely something "new" and not a remake. Ragnar has said he's interested in making new stories (in the Longes Journey universe, or even complete new ones) and not remaking the old ones (to which he doesn't owe the rights as well)
For all those wanting a remake so badly, maybe the best chance of this happenning would be for Chapters to be such a smashing success (beyond Kickstarter, after its release) that Funcom will start considering to do that HD versions of the older games (with Ragnar's and RTG's "guidance" of course).

    17. Julien Lavoie on February 15, 2013

I get a feeling TLJH is to get the money to buy the IP back from Funcom and thus take it "Home" with Ragnar. But it sounds like that might be way too cheap to buy an IP so maybe it's just about borrowing it to re-release TLJ for modern computers.

    18. Rinu on February 15, 2013

@Tet Yoon Lee: More rubber ducky puzzles... O__o I would rather have rubber ducky plush toy in-game :P.

    19. Tet Yoon Lee on February 15, 2013

I still think Wonkers should get married to Tux. And where's the goal to add a few rubber ducky style puzzles ;-)

    20. Michael Hartmann
      on February 15, 2013

@Stephen: I'm sorry, but are you insane? RTG promised Mac and Linux support as a stretch goal from the beginning. Many Mac/Linux users already backed the project because of this promise and more are waiting. Do you honestly think that it would be a good move for RTG to not keep their promise? Besides, it is an easy to reach goal on our way to more stretch goals.

@RTG: All three goals sound great. Thanks for keeping the goals so close together. Can't wait to reach the first goal and find out more about future stretch goals.

Just realised that I needed to up my pledge .. 2 mill would be great :D

    23. Laila Eikeland Knutsen on February 15, 2013

Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back! I really, really want to find out what theese mysterious stretch goals are. But also: LORE!! I love it! Bring it on, as much as possible! I really adored frolicking about in the library in Marcuria in the first TLJ game. I read all the books I could.

    24. Matti Hansson on February 15, 2013

$2 million gives us TLJ for PlayStation Home? :)

    25. Rinu on February 15, 2013

I REALLY want to know what the 2mill is!

At least we need 1 mill, THE JOURNEY ... MUST ... BE ... LONGER. For it is the journey and not the destination that is the true adventure.

    27. symbiotics on February 15, 2013

@Stephen J O'Neill you're WAY offbase here, I can assure you there are lots of fans of the original trilogy that use Mac and Linux, and it isn't wise to form opinions on something you dont have the whole information on. This is anything but a "cash grab"

    28. Akin on February 15, 2013

1.05M sounds like a language bonus (perhaps at release?)
Perhaps that will be where they throw in some more languages (or, one would assume, at least Spanish)

    29. Lera on February 15, 2013

It was always said that Dreamfall is a different story from TLJ.
TLJ is April's story, Dreamfall is Zoe's... so TLJH should be about April! So want to see it!.. but 2 mil. seems so dream-like

    30. Rinu on February 15, 2013

@Pyragor: I think it will be something close but above Senorita Misterio (1 mil). Hopefully, you will get your answer soon enoug in the form of strech goals :).

    31. Chissà Perchè on February 15, 2013

So... judging from art TLJH is going to be the sequel to the original TLJ. Amirite?

    32. Tore Mygland ~~Dream Traveller~~ $6.13 on February 15, 2013

TLJH - A 2D continuation of April's story? But is it "in-quel" or sequel? Before or after the Dreamer cycle? Exciting. But I'm not really ready to up my pledge yet... ($377.13 is a but on the high side already...)

    33. Giorgos Chrysikopoulos - Dream Traveller on February 15, 2013

@O'Neill: What are you talking about? This is as transparent as it looks: a lot of people here have requested Mac/Linux support and, while easy to do with the Unity Engine they are using, it's not an "automatic" thing to do - it needs work and time and testing to ensure it is done well - so they can only do it if the funding exceeds the goal by 50k $ and they just openly informed us about it. The same with the other goals, additional stuff needs more work, more time, more money. Whomever is interested in them (and a lot of people do and purposefully haven't pledged their fullest waiting for these features) freely increases their pledge, nobody is "forcing" anyone to give money to this project.
Also, at least one guy here has said that he was waiting for Linux confirmation to spread the word to the Linux community who has people very interested in any project done for the platform (even if they haven't played the previous games)

    36. Pyragor on February 15, 2013

What about additionnal languages such as French, German, Spanish, etc ?
According to FAQ, it is part of stretch goals, but no news here.

    37. Rivercliff on February 15, 2013

Impressive goals and even more impressive rewards! Would that wishing made it so!

No idea why you're all so pessimistic 'bout the 2 mil goal. We're not too far away from our first and we're not even over week one. Let this happen, people!
(Waiting for the localisations, though - with the library ingame this will obviously be a tremendous amount of work to be done, I can see that. Is that the reason why you haven't announced this as a stretchgoal yet?)

      Stephen J O'Neill on February 15, 2013

OK... Now you're taking the piss.

Why would someone who has never played the games invest in 'linux and mac and mysteries'.

These 'features' aren't intended to get new players. They're designed to get current investors to invest more.

You've played pop psychology really well up to now but don't change this from a considered project to a blatant cash grab.

Speculating on "The Longest Journey Home": with the 2nd picture containing a shot from the first game, I'd speculate this stretch would be a remake of the first game using current technology (Unity). Would also work with the "home" part of the name.

      You're teasing us too much!
      I love it :)

The linux version is a very nice addition and I upped my backing for an extra digital download.

Question: regarding the personalised items (credits and such) will we be able to choose which name is used? I want to give this as a present.

    42. Malcolm Swoboda on February 15, 2013

      I wants Loremaster...

    43. Rinu on February 15, 2013

*drool* Moar! Mr. Wonker always depressed me but the one above is cute :).

Will be possible to receive Linux AND Windows versions? I would prefer to get both. After all, GOG allows download of Win&Mac, so Linux is kind of in disadvantage here :).

Very cool! The Loremaster sounds great already, but I'm hoping we'll reach the 1 mill. at very least.

I'm curious about TLJH. I'm not sure if I see the Kickstarter coming to 2 million though. But here's hoping! :)

    47. Tyrel on February 15, 2013

I don't really think 2 million $ is within our reach, but as others have said, hope dies last...

Anyways, I'm really intrested in the 1m $ goal as well, I want the game to have as much detail as humanly possible.

    48. Leo on February 15, 2013

@Gernot: wise decision! I agree! Now it's time for all Mac/Linux fence sitters to pledge or pledge to the desired tier :)
