21,858 backers pledged $1,538,425 to help bring this project to life.

Update #7: Stretch goals revealed!

We're fast approaching our original $850,000 goal and our first week on Kickstarter! To celebrate this fact we're revealing our first three stretch goals.

These goals include the much-anticipated Mac and Linux versions at $900,000, represented here via our old friend Wonkers and some new toys!

We're also revealing a little teaser for our ultimate stretch goal. The $2 million mark will introduce The Longest Journey Home.

Exactly what that last one means, we won't reveal quite yet. We want to get a little bit closer before we'll let the secret out of the bag, but feel free to speculate in the comments!

Here, then, are our first three stretch goals:

  • $900,000 - Apples & Penguins: Mac and Linux versions of Dreamfall Chapters. Pledgers will be able to choose which version of the game they want to download, and to receive on DVD and/or memory stick
  • $950,000 - The Loremaster, which includes the Great Library of Marcuria (rebuilt in secrecy, of course), a fully-voiced librarian character, and tons of books, documents, ancient parchments and tomes of lore in-game for players to read, explore and dig into!
  • $1,000,000 - A Longer Journey, which allows us to create new locations, characters and side stories, adding great depth to the world, additional gameplay and new dialogue, lore, magical creatures...and some cool surprises! Check back later for more information about this stretch goal!
Beyond $1,000,000 lies many more mysteries, and we will announce additional stretch goals as soon as we reach our first one -- including, of course, more information about The Longest Journey Home!

The Longest Journey Home - the movie!

    2. Guran - St Christopher's Alumni on February 15, 2013

@Stephen I'd say the guys at Red Thread also are a well-known dev team with an established history. We wont reach $4mil for sure but Im sure we end up somewhere between 1,5-2mil :)

    3. Rikard Peterson on February 15, 2013

Like some other already have commented, the "buy once - play on any plaform" policy used by many these days (Steam, GOG, Humble Bundles, The Double Fine Adventure…) is a very good concept that I wish everyone would use. Please don't make us pick a platform.

As for speculation about "The Longest Journey Home": The final part of the TLJ/Dreamfall trilogy? (What I've read elsewhere is that Dreamfall+Dreamfall Chapters together form the second part of what was imagined as a trilogy.)

    4. Stephan Cho on February 15, 2013

@Kazioo -- Agreed. Project Eternity was also more marketable by virtue of it being backed by a renowned dev team with a well-established history.

    5. Guran - St Christopher's Alumni on February 15, 2013

@kazioo project eternity is far from the only kickstarter with a good end surge. We got good stretch goals here too so we hopefully we can make a good finish too :)

    6. Tom Brückner on February 15, 2013

@Kirill: I don't agree! The German version was fine, and I'd like to play this with my kids, too. When my daughter heard about a sequel to DF, she nearly danced through the room...

Please, PUH-lease, don't make any half-assed localisations this time and focus of the core of the game which should, of course, be in english.

    8. Shai Abraham on February 15, 2013

Please add the stretch goal's image to the main page! This is very important for potential backers to see.

    9. Kazioo on February 15, 2013

      @ Guran
Comparisons with Project Eternity are rather pointless. They had completely different approach to kickstarter campaign and gaming websites were hyping it every day. They showed only one perfect screenshot which gave them 1M$ boost.

    10. Matt Williams on February 15, 2013

People of the internet, we must reach $2M!!!

    11. Matt on February 15, 2013

I really hope that the USB key will be available to any pledge level above 20. :) I am definitely willing to get it! :D

    12. Marta Pilliu | Dream Traveller $6.13 on February 15, 2013

I guess TLJH fills the gap between TLJ and Dreamfall. "What happened to April in the past ten years?"
But I would like to see what happens after DF:C... 'cause I hope April survived: I'd like to see her discovering the full potential of an "Artisan" and kick some a**es for the sake of the world(s). Or something like that, you know... XD

That kind of things that probably will never happen ç_ç

    13. Guran - St Christopher's Alumni on February 15, 2013

@ddbelyea $2mil is high, but definitely possible. Many projects get at good surge during the final days of the campaign. Check the chart of Project Eternity for example:

I am seriously considering increasing my pledge. I have some extra money right now and that cloth map is really appealing to me. I wish I could really go over the top and become a NPC but that is out of my reach.

      ddbelyea on February 15, 2013

$2mil is a pretty lofty goal. Not saying it is impossible, but our current trend is definitely not going towards that currently (I don't mean kicktraq's trend, that trend is in no way logical). We will obviously hit the goal, even if no more backers come, I'm sure are a large percentage of the 12000 current backers would up their pledges to make that happen. I do like that the other stretch goals are every 50k, as it is very likely that it will go at least 50k above (even if just due to last minute upping of pledges).

    17. Yuri on February 15, 2013

Awesome. Thanks for Linux port goal. I think it'll be no problem with it. )

We've definitely got to get to $1,000,000, as an even Longer Journey is what it's all about! But surely that $2,000,000 should be possible, too? Heck, you guys deserve to break the $5,000,000 record set by Chris Roberts's Star Citizen.

To help you along, I increased my pledge from $75 to $150 today. :)

    19. Phil Wyatt - Dream Traveller - on February 15, 2013

I don't think 2m will be any kind of remake, but am sure it will be prequel or sequel to TLJ. But I would rather play new material then old, no matter how much nicer it looks ;)

    20. Christopher Ellis on February 15, 2013

I would hope that TLJ Home is buying back the rights to the original saga... An HD remake would be awesome!

    21. Raquel Lijó on February 15, 2013

We need to get to $1.000.000!!! And I have a really nice feeling about the 1.050.000 :P Let's make this happen! *-*

      OMG! OMG!
      The Great Library!
It was soooo great to read all those wonderful stories in the Enclave, I loved it!

And... OMG! OMG! OMG! TLJ Home!? What is it? A prequel? A sequel? You ALL know that we NEED to reach that goal now, my fellow backers!
I need to know more about it. And about April! She's like a sister to me too, dear Ragnar (yes, I read your reddit Q&A :D ), and you can't simply kill YOUR/MY/OUR sister. Right?

Damn, sorry, but I'm overhyped XD
This Kickstarter campaign is better than E3, wow! <3

    25. Kevin Bell on February 15, 2013

If "The Longest Journey Home" referred to a remake of the original "Longest Journey", I would have backed this project even without a new game!

    26. Missing avatar

      AstralWanderer on February 15, 2013

The $1 million stretch looks the most interesting and hopefully should correct what I felt was a major failing in Dreamfall (no ability to sidetrack and explore - the original TLJ was restrictive too, but it was 2D and a 3D presentation raises expectations). In terms of funding, $3 million seems possible (almost all projects see their fastest growth during their last few days) and that should allow for something special.
Longest Journey Home? I'd guess that to be a remaking of the original TLJ - a nice idea but I would rather see all the effort go into this game, with future expansions allowing people to explore Stark and Arcadia further.

I cant't wait to dig in the lore tha Loremaster will offer! :)

    30. Tomimt on February 15, 2013

Those are good, solid stretch goals. I firmly believe 2 million is doable, especially if you open Paypal after the initial 850k has been reached.

    31. Gaute Juveth on February 15, 2013

Great! :) $2 mill is doable. We need a steady pledge level for 2 weeks. And then really remind people at the end of the campaign. Get the word out and we should see a end surge as most other projects like this have seen. But we pledgers and fans are up for the promotion work!

My guess is that TLJ Home - a story of what happened to April between TLJ and Dreamfall.

    34. symbiotics on February 15, 2013

ahh I remember that font at the bottom of the poster, Folkard, I don't remember if it was a custom made font, I hope you guys are able to use it again in chapters!

$2 million is quite the stretch, but I hope we can make it to $1 million at least.

    36. Phil Wyatt - Dream Traveller - on February 15, 2013

What would be GREAT is if the IN GAME books in the library could somehow be clicked on and saved onto the destop as E-Books. Then we could read in our spare time. Obviously depends how much writing there is... I don't mind reading books in game but having them to read outside would be even nicer :)

    37. ostubash on February 15, 2013

Loremaster sounds awesome. I'd spend hours reading all those books for reeeeeealy.

    38. Graham Ferguson on February 15, 2013

      The Longest Journey Home.

My mind is doing overtime at the thought of what this might be. With that level of investment I know what I want it to be, put it that way but I don't want to tempt fate...

I would like to see a Russian language! The previous "Dreamfall" game was localized by Lazy Games and Snowball Studios (and was published by New Disk). The russian voice of Zoë Castillo was Elena Ivasishina - her voice is so awesome! So I hope to hear the voices of same russian actors again. :)

I love that quote at 1,050,000$: "You see, señorita, mystery is important. To know everything, to know the whole truth, is dull. There is no magic in that. Magic is not knowing, magic is wondering about what and how and where." - I hope Cortez comes back!

    43. RoyMartin on February 15, 2013

@Stephen - I've backed and followed a lot of Kickstarter projects, and I know that announcing Mac and Linux is nothing but positive. Not everyone will "find a way to play it anyway", they wan compatability for their platform.

@Andrey - I'd be very surprised if we didn't reach at least one million. Pledges are steady and there's 22 days left.

Rufus Weiss on February 15, 2013

Yeah, it would be nice, if the WIN/MAC/LINUX executables will all be ON THE SAME DVD.

      @Anthony Coddington
I really think, the different versions of executables cannot have such a great size.
The game data files are a lot bigger in comparison.
game data files ~ 5 GB
      executables and libraries ~ 50MB

If it will be really impossible to bring all versions to one DVD it would be nice if we could download the executables for different systems somewhere.

    45. Phil Wyatt - Dream Traveller - on February 15, 2013

Stephen u do make a good point here... Mystery about things such as release platforms and localisation could be holding back many people from pledging. Maybe those ones should be de-mystified ;)

Once the word spreads to those communities let's hope they see the worth of jumping aboard now rather then waiting for a copy later on...

Don't want to sound unoptimistic but it is clear that donations stream became smaller last few days. It seems everyone who really waited for sequel/closure game has already donated,
While Linux&Mac platforms stretch goal is reacheable statistically I wouldn't be surprised total income would be below 1 million.

In any case I think that we all should spread the word harder in forums, tweet, friends, etc.

    47. Missing avatar

      Stephen J O'Neill on February 15, 2013

      @Cristhian & @Michael Hartmann & @Giorgos

Platform portability is neither a mystery nor problem if you intend to play the game. (because you'll find a way to play it anyway) and it's not going to get new investors.

What we need is a wider audience and not a more enthusiastic family.

Look at that list without context.

(you know nothing about the game and at 1.5 mil you could get ... ta daa! localisation, maybe)

Giorgos provided more explanation and reasoning than the update but missed the detail bit.

Sergio Giustri said it better than I.

    48. Phil Wyatt - Dream Traveller - on February 15, 2013

Yeah, LGH got to be a direct continuation to Longest Journey. April returning home ;)

We got to do more to spread the word people :D 2 million is gonna be difficult, but I know we can do it. The pledge rate has slowed down but as long as we make... let's see.... at least $55,000 per day we will get there!

    49. Skyl--- on February 15, 2013

Dear RTG, thank you for keeping your word about making Linux (& OSX) support your first stretchgoal! You know you guys rock, right? I know that, even with Unity 4, some extra work/testing is needed to properly support additional platforms and provide boxed versions for our favourite OS. Now that Linux version is confirmed, first thing I'm going to do is up my pledge from $5 to $75.

    50. Stephan Vandenborn on February 15, 2013

Federico & Raoul I feel and fear the same. Not to be negative, i also want the $2milion (Cave Johnson would say "we packed more content in there so that's more TLJ per TLJ". Here are the stats.

      day 1 saturday: 400.000
      day 2 sunday: 100.000
      day 3 monday: 100.000
      Day 4 tuesday: 70.000
      Day 5 wednesday: 44.000
      day 6 thursday: 33.000
      Day 7 Friday: 36.000

We will reach the complete goal during next week but you also have to take into account the withdrawals that will happen.

But even if we would get 22 days of $30.000 we would get to 660000 max, so the $ per day rate has to actually increase. Maybe guys like athene can help out with that as well ? People who can reach a big audience with their passion, no matter what game it is or genre.

As of now, we need a minimum of $3.045 per day to actually make the first goal, but if we remain around a steady 30.000 , certainly we can hope for RTG to receive more overhead money, which means more stretch goal. I'd be VERY happy already with the loremaster DLC.
