Tome of the Balance

Posted by Red Thread Games (Creator)

The digital preview of the Tome of the Balance is ready for download for eligible backers ($50 tier and up). You can find the PDF in your Humble Bundle account, under purchases.

If you've never claimed your digital rewards, please read this forum post for instructions.

As announced back in September, we decided to merge the printed materials into a single volume. The Tome is combined art and lore book, short story collection and graphic novel — and, like the game itself, much bigger than originally anticipated.

Note that this is a first look at what the Tome will look like in print. There will be changes and addendums, including additional artwork. We’re releasing the digital preview today for two reasons:

One, we wanted to send it out before the holidays, because this is the perfect time of the year to curl up in a comfy chair with a good (digital) book.

Two, once we start printing, there’s no way back, and errors can’t be easily fixed.

The Tome is a Big Boy and there’s a ton of text. We’ve done several editing passes but there will be grammatical and formatting errors. If you come across any, we’d appreciate hearing about it: we plan to fix them all before sending the book off to the printers.

Please send your feedback to using the subject line ‘Tome of the Balance’, or post to the appropriate thread on our official forum.

Do keep in mind, as stated in the book itself, that the Tome includes lore and designs written before production began on Chapters. There were many changes during production, and if something in the Tome doesn’t factually match the end result, it’s probably not an error.

The current PDF will be replaced with an updated version as soon as it’s ready for printing, after the holidays. You’ll be able to re-download it at that point.

One final thing: this is a standard PDF. It contains no protections against ‘redistribution’. Given that the Tome is supposed to be a Kickstarter exclusive, we’d greatly appreciate your support in keeping it exclusive.

One more final thing: if you’re a lower-tier backer (or a non-backer) who's interested in purchasing the digital edition of the Tome, we’re looking for input and ideas. We could make it available for sale via our website (or Steam) but we don’t know if that’s entirely fair to higher-tier backers — at least not yet. We’ll be listening to your thoughts on this matter and make a decision in January.

Oh, and one last thing: if you stuck around long enough to read this, you deserve a post-credits stinger. Here is what the Dreamer Edition will look like when it ships next year, with the printed Tome (and other goodies) inside.

Still here? We’d like to remind you that our upcoming game Draugen is available for wish-listing on both Steam and If you enjoy our work, please consider adding the game to your list(s). As always, we appreciate your support — we wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you.

Thank you, and happy holidays from everyone at Red Thread Games!

Any chance for a new update on the physical rewards? I've been holding of playing the game until I can get that true boxed experience but my patience is really being tested xD

I’m so angry about Dreamers. I’ve not receive a single part of my £250 physical edition. It’s criminal.

Do I need to do anything to secure my physical edition ???

I would love to buy the tome (wasn't able to back at a high tier at the time of the KS). If there were extra physical copies, I would be interested in those also!

Found it. Not at the top alongside the other linked items, but below "the fold" at the bottom.

$500 tier, but also no link in my Humble aacount.

I have a couple of questions:

      1. When will GOG buyers of the special edition get the extras they were promised (the short story collection was part of this).
      2. What happened to the special edition on GOG? It doesn't seem to be sold there any more.

    7. Shatners Bassoon on

Only just seen this. Im a $75 tier backer and I cannot find a link to the PDF in my humble account. Game and soundtrack are there though.

@ Creator thanks for the update and the comment!

      @AstralWanderer: Thanks for the feedback!

Since you’re not the only one who’s commented on this, we wanted to clarify a few things about the Tome.

The Tome of the Balance is a comprehensive collection of design documents and fiction produced before, during and after the development of Dreamfall Chapters, in support of that game’s world and narrative. During the writing of the Tome, we also decided to incorporate some text from TLJ and Dreamfall design documents, to fill in more information about a few of the returning characters and locations. The Tome’s reason for existence was to give us a platform to share a bunch of things that never made it into the game(s), for various reasons, along with the materials produced as part of the world-building.

The Tome isn’t, and was never supposed to be, a continuation of the story or an opportunity to fill in blanks or answer lingering questions. Maybe there will be something like that in the future; the Tome ain’t it. So don’t expect this book to be a satisfactory conclusion to the saga, to April’s journey, to Zoë’s future — that was never its purpose, and if you begin reading with those expectations, you will be disappointed.

As for selling additional copies: we’ll have to see. You are absolutely right; we will have a few hundred copies left over after all the orders have been fulfilled. Some (most?) of those will be used as gifts to partners, friends and supporters. Some will remain in our library. As for the rest? We have thought about selling them, yes, but there are some licensing challenges to figure out first. So it’s not just a question of availability and cost. We’d love to eventually share the Tome with ALL of our backers, but reality might get in the way of that ambition. So we’ll just have to wait and see.

    10. Tobo Boldwin on

The Tome is beautiful. Please rethink making physical copies available to buy! It would be sad if this labor of love were limited to a small one-time run.

As others have said, a lot of time has passed and people who may not have been able to spend the necessary money four years ago may be able to do so now.

      AstralWanderer on

First, thanks to RTG for providing this PDF just before Christmas (a nice present). It's provided a good deal of interesting info and tied up some loose ends from Chapters and its precursors. Hopefully, more will be added to cover what happened to April and Zoe's companions from the previous games (e.g. Fiona and Mickie at the Border House, Captain Nebevay and Tun Luiec on the White Dragon, Bryn and Chawan of the resistance).

I would also agree with making the Tome more widely available. Frankly given the delays backers have had with this, a PDF version should be given free to all levels receiving the game.

As for the physical version, RTG will need to print just under 700 copies to fulfil pledge requirements - the economics of book printing tend to favour round-figure production quantities so printing, say, 1,000 may have little extra cost. It would then make sense to sell extra copies and I would have no issue with this - but if quantities are to be limited, then please give other backers first shot at purchasing them. Those who pledged for a physical copy could have theirs numbered or signed by RTG to make it more valuable in return.

Thanks for the update RTG and for posting up the work-in-progress! Just like to add my vote as a higher tier backer ($500) that I would be happy to have the Tome available for sale to others!

Thanks, everyone, I now see it. Seriously it wasn't there yesterday. Happy Holidays to everyone.

$500+ tier here: I don't mind selling ANY of the rewards as long as the revenue from them helps RTG to fulfill their Kickstarter promises.

    20. Matt on

YAY! I just got my boyfriend to play the game. I understand the logistics nightmare but I do wish there was an opporunities for certain backers to get a physical copy. My situation has changed drastically in 4 years. I was an undergrad student back then.

That being said, I have no qualms with this being a $10 digital add on for all fans.

    21. Aerothorn on

It is beyond me why Red Thread refuses to give regular updates on ALL backer rewards. I am glad the book is coming together, but what about the other rewards?

I have backed many, many kickstarters. A few were, sadly, outright frauds/take-the-money-and-run situations; but of the ones which are legitimate endeavors, this has had by far the worst communication. I genuinely do not understand.

Also, Red Thread has failed *twice* and giving my friend her t-shirt, which is ridiculous.

    22. Brys on

Another $500 backer chiming in: I also don't have a problem offering the digital version of the tome for sale. It looks like it's going to be something special, and those of us in the higher tiers will still have the printed version as our reward for waiting so long, so I say put it up on Steam or Humble and let everyone enjoy it digitally.

      Andrew Blackledge on

This is the greatest Christmas miracle. Thank you so much. As a Draic Kin level backer, I absolutely think you should still make the digital version available for purchase.

    24. Maxwell Horse on

Looking forward to reading this early-draft version of the Tome. As a higher-tier backer, I too would be fine if it were available to purchase by anyone.

    25. Husker Dan

I do not see in my Humble account and I was a $75 Digital Collectors pledge.

    26. Aristotelis Kosmadakis on

I am one of those people who couldn't afford much back in the day, but would love to purchase the book now, whether in digital or even more so in actual physical form. I would also be fist in line to buy the game (again) if it ever comes out in any sort of special boxed physical edition.

    27. Philippe Jandot on

And what about the other rewards like:
      - 'Journeys: Birth' digital eBook
      - Digital Map of Arcadia
      - Digital copy of the making-of-videos

And are you going to comment about the missing content from the stretch goals ?

It is really disappointing that you as if everything is normal in your updates, that you never give a full and honest picture of the situation.

But of course you never forget to mention draugen!
You do a honorable amend and come clean before your backers before asking anything !!

    28. Donald Hopkins on

As a high-tier backer, I'm perfectly okay with the Tome being available to anyone. If someone is a fan of the series, but for whatever reason, couldn't back the project at the time, I don't think they should be blocked from a piece of content that enriches the Dreamfall universe.

    29. Red Thread Games Creator on

@Pirateguybrush Thanks for the input! Yes, there's a reason why those stories are placed where they are placed. The book benefits from being read cover to cover...but we'll take it under consideration! As for the table of contentS (error will be corrected), it's going to be cleaned up and redone for the final copy. Thank you!

    30. Andrew Snyder on

Ridiculous Tier backer here. Go ahead and sell the PDF! It helps you out, and helps out TLJ fans.

    31. Pirateguybrush on

A few thoughts after a skim. Overall, looking great:

Table of contents needs a tidy-up, capitalisation standardised one way or the other, and category headings made clearer. As it stands, it's very difficult to parse. It's also traditionally written as "Table of contents" with an S, rather than "Table of content".

It looks like the various story sections are scattered throughout the book (for example there's a graphic novel between the Arcadia and Stark sections). My preference would be to organise these all together in one place. Having not actually *read* it though, maybe that decision was made because those stories benefit from the lore that directly precedes them.

If at all possible, I'd love to have a double page spread to introduce each of these stories/sections individually, to create more separation between sections. It seems a bit inconsistent at present with how the sections are divided.

    32. Red Thread Games Creator on

We have solved an issue that appeared to only affect $500 tier backers (and up?) — the Tome PDF would not show up in their Humble library. We have re-added the file to the $500 tier and everyone should now have access to the Tome. Please let us know if you still can't find or download the eBook.

    33. Pirateguybrush on

Update: For anyone trying to find the book, look in your purchases section, and change the dropdown at the top from windows/mac/linux to ebook.

    34. James Clayton on

I see the PDF now. It's appeared in between the episode 1 art book and the map of Europolis, where half an hour ago there was nothing.

    35. Pirateguybrush on

As a side note, I'm not seeing this in my humble library yet, and I'm a high tier backer.

Adding my 500+ voice to it - absolutely no objection to y'all selling the digital or physical versions. In fact I'd be happy to know that my pledge is getting more cool stuff to people.

    37. Andy Shaw on

For those having problems with finding the Tome, have you gone to your account and then clicked on Purchases? Clicking on Dreamfall Chapters and then scrolling down should show it up there under eBook.

    38. Andy Shaw on

I also would have no problem with it being available for sale, especially if this helps the company out generally too. I still have hope for the Longest Journey Home! :)

    39. James Clayton on

I still just see a notice that the Tome of the Balance (and all the other printed materials, listed separately) will be added to my account once it's available?

    40. Junaid Chundrigar on

Also a $500+ backer here and no problems whatsoever.

The tome isn't appearing in my HumbleBunder overview though, while all the other stuff is, so hope someone can help me out.

    41. Mikhail Aristov on

As one of the three-digit backers, I see no reason to deny other people the art book if they want to purchase it. If you decide to keep it exclusive, a good compromise IMO would be to only sell the art book to those 13k who originally backed at lower tiers.

    42. Pirateguybrush on

High tier backer ($500) here. I have no objections to the tome going on sale, digital or physical. I'm sure there are people who couldn't afford it at the time of the kickstarter, and would be upset to miss out. Don't let me stand in their way.

I suspect the types of people who enjoy your games enough to back at higher tiers would have a similarly relaxed stance on this.

    43. TrentJaspar on

@RTG: Off-topic, but wanted to take this opportunity to say that I've finally gotten around to playing the game (early Book 3) and so far I think it's absolutely fantastic-- it's exactly the game I've always wanted to play...the perfect combination of story, sci-fi, magic, exploration, characters, puzzles, lore, easter eggs, humor, and the list goes on. Kudos on a wonderful job and I can't wait to keep playing-- I'm having the (gaming) time of my life!

    44. Jiří Malina on

As a higher tear digital backer Im completely fine with open sale of the stuff. I myself would appreciate to be able to buy physical stuff now because I did not have money at the time of backing.

    45. TrentJaspar on

@Jamil: kudos to you. I suspect you'll be in the minority. :P

    46. Jamil Ismaili | Eternal Dreamer on

As a higher tier backer fwiw I have no personal objections to the digital Tome going on sale for any who would like to buy as soon as any technical issues doing so can be overcome
Certainly no need to hold back on my account. Appreciate others might differ on this
Merry Christmas to all at RTG, their families and fellow backers x

    47. Andrew Pam on

As a lower-tier backer who has played and enjoyed all of the Longest Journey games, I would very much like the option to buy the digital version of the Tome some time in the future.
