The Final Cut cometh

Posted by Red Thread Games (Creator)

The art speaks the truth:

In just over a week, on July 21st, the updated, upgraded, edited, optimised and remastered Final Cut edition of Dreamfall Chapters lands on PC and Mac. This is the culmination of almost five years of work by the Red Thread team, and we're both grateful and relieved that we've made it to the end of the road in one piece…accompanied by our amazing backers. Hurray!

As mentioned in our last Kickstarter update, The Final Cut (TFC) includes all the visual and audio upgrades from the console versions, including (but not limited to) new and tweaked character models, an expanded soundtrack, remastered voice-overs and reworked sound effects. We've made some nips and tucks throughout the game, and we've fixed a ton of bugs. There are some cool new special features, including playable deleted scenes and character profiles. In addition, TFC updates the game engine to a later version of Unity, and should run smoother and faster, and look better, on most PCs and Macs.

Last but not least, TFC includes the final batch of in-game Kickstarter rewards, including outfit changes and Birthright characters.

We'll be (re-)announcing the imminent release shortly with a new trailer, new key art and an updated recap video of the story so far – but, as usual, you guys are getting a head start:

To manage expectations a bit: this is still Dreamfall Chapters as you know it – don't expect the game to look and feel dramatically different (although it definitely sounds a lot better than before) and if you've recently played and finished the journey, there might not be enough reasons to revisit the story just yet. But for anyone who's yet to start playing, now's the time; for players unfamiliar with the saga, we've made it a whole lot easier to get started; and for the team, it's been amazing to have this rare opportunity to go back and make the tweaks, changes and fixes we've always wanted to do but never had the time or budget for. This truly is The Final Cut.

Our attention is now on the next and concluding step in the campaign: getting all those boxes out to backers. We're honestly looking forward to a fresh challenge, and we hope and plan to make the wait worth it – we know you've all been extremely patient, and we appreciate that. In August, we'll have a timeline to share and more information about when and how and what we'll be doing to get The Final Cut onto discs, into boxes, and up on shelves in thousands of homes across the world.

There are only two words that properly convey how we feel about this: "EEK!" and "YAY!"

Until next time,

Team RTG

It's been a long road since March 10th 2013, but thank you for the journey, and the Final release o7

Yep - now it's time to play it! I assume the e-books for Journeys: Birth and Tome of the Balance (two things for which I specifically backed that particular tier) are still being worked on?

    4. Paskarl (k0SH) on

Nice. So I finally can start to play it :-)

And now I'm waiting for the BOXED copy of the game :-)

    5. Fitheach on

@Jean-Claude you can change the address on Backerkit or perhaps if you made an account.
If none of that works you can message them by clicking on the view pledge button here and go to the message tab.

I still do not see the final cut on humble. Will it be updated soon, or can i get it somewhere else?

    7. Paul Marzagalli on

I confess that I've put off playing the game b/c I hold out hope that an updated version of The Longest Journey will one day be released. I'd like to replay that before delving into the Dreamfall and Chapters. Is there any chance that might happen?

@"Our attention is now on the next and concluding step in the campaign: getting all those boxes out to backers."

I'm assuming this means that the 250$ pledges will finally get their signed boxed copies? I am moving in August how can I change my address with you so the game goes to the correct address.

What time is the update going to be implemented? :D

Many, many congratulations to the team for all their work over the last (holy jibbers crabst!) five years! It has been such a treat to be a part (even if very small) of the process in seeing this game come to be. Hopefully some day we'll see TLJ Home. XOXO

Looking forward to it soooooo freaking much. :)

(Now please work on the Kickstarter for The Longest Journey Home. ;))

Will the interactive graphic novel for the Story So Far, about the previous games, and The Loremaster make it into the Final Cut?

I know that there are other promised stuff too (some of it being physical rewards and some being tier exclusive), but I'm mostly interested in the in-game stuff that were to be for everyone.

    16. Sam Keshavarz on

Will you please update us when you're ready to share what is next for the team.

VERY excited to re-experience the newly optimized and polished experience.

    17. Jeremie Lariviere

      very cool!

    18. Paul Melampy on

Would be nice to hear about all the other stretch goals and perks that still need to be added.

Does "including" actually mean "including, but not limited to"? Or are those the only things you're adding?

    19. Rodolink on

To me one of the best Kickstarter campaigns ever! Thanks for everything.

    20. Rich Stoehr on

That "Story So Far" update made me want to replay to first two games!

Question: I just got Dreamfall Chapters for the PS4. Are the "Final Cut" materials included on the PS4 release too?

    21. burnsflipper on

For those of us who have already completed this, how do we access the extra content? For example, the outfits, playable deleted scenes and character profiles? Thanks.

Great job Red Thread, I salute you! I hope we see lots of new adventure games from you in the future!

    23. Stew OotG Knight/Captain Bloodcoffee on

New update states that now the final edition of the game is finished, they can go ahead and get it put on discs and sort physical rewards. Tough to do that before the game is 100%

      @Red Thread Games:
Actually, you were not wrong. Linux IS PC. I understand, that under "PC" you meant Windows but two mistakes stacked together made the right answer :-)

Side question: how do your Linux and Mac gamer bases relate? You called Linux audience "tiny" yet, as it seems, Mac userbase is not (given that you actually mentioned them in the update)…

Thanks for the quick response to Dugan Chen - was going to make the same complaint, but see there's no need. :)

    28. Stew OotG Knight/Captain Bloodcoffee on

Will the console versions be getting updates with these new additions?

    29. William Dovan

Well it's great that the game is where it is today but myself and many other backers (see the comments section) feel a little bit disappointed that we've been overlooked for some reason or other - I backed at the $1000 Most Wanted level and after numerous attempts to get in touch with Red Thread did not even get a response back (I wasn't mentioned in the game and it was probably too much effort once the gold cut was approved to tweak things). I don't believe I'm alone in this regard as well.

    30. TrentJaspar on

Thank you so much-- and great work! Thank you especially for releasing the Humble DRM-free version at the same time. I'm hopeful that the inevitable patches to TFC will be reasonably timely as well-- so I can finally play this game! :-) Thank you!

    31. Stephen "Stoibs" D

Somewhat embarrassed to say that I fall into that category of folk who still haven't properly played this yet.. :o

I guess this will be the motivating kick up the backside I really need to get stuck into it.

Dugan Chen: …and Linux, of course. Apologies for leaving that out; it may be a tiny part of our player base, but it's an important (and vocal!) one. We've tested TFC on Linux and it's good for launch.

Only PC and Mac? Could you please comment on the Linux release of The Final Cut?

I was a backer because you'd targeted Linux from the start.
