REDUX is live!

It's finally time.

Book Five: REDUX is now live on Steam and GOG, and "soon" via the Humble Store (no ETA yet, we're waiting on word from Humble).

There's also a new trailer out, and it's beautiful and emotional…but we're actually going to recommend waiting until you've played the episode before watching it (and you definitely should watch it). There are potential (and light) spoilers, and you may want to stay unspoiled.

(Of course, if you don't care about spoilers and just want to get in the mood before playing, you should watch it right now.)

https://youtu.be/C3-XSI4BPyQ

The fifth and final episode brings the saga to a close. The story is complete, and we can't thank you enough for your support these past three years. It's meant the world to us. We can't wait to hear what you think — and, more importantly, how you feel — after the journey's end.

But of course, we're not quite done with Dreamfall Chapters yet. There are rewards to fulfil and a 'complete edition' (final name TBD) to be made: that's the version we'll stick on discs and USBs and ship out to backers. But we'll send out another update about the physical (and remaining digital) rewards before the summer holidays.

Why are you still reading this? REDUX is out! Go download it now, and finish your longest journey!

Team RTG

Where is my physical copy of the game? I paid $125 for it and you said you're update us before the Summer holidays. That was months ago. Where is it?

Just came here to say crikey, you people have done it again, this was absolutely fantastic and the nod at the end made me tear up. Thankyou for bringing the conclusion to the epic saga and making me feel that magic all over again, I was and still am sad to see it over and I had such an amazing time with such interesting characters and amazing settings over these games with the last one being a superb sendoff. Thankyou everyone at RedThread :)

I didn't have time at launch to say it, but, truly CONGRATULATIONS RTG! I look forward to playing the game beginning to end now. I also very much look forward to the possible further continuation of the TLJ story as it's my understanding that Ragnar had intended that story to complete in a separate game (TLJ Home). Many thanks for the journey and may the balance be with you!

    5. Eric Pipedream Leisy on

Congratulations Red Thread Games. Just the fact that you completed and delivered your game is a huge achievement. Kickstarters are never guaranteed, so once again, congratulations, and well done. TLJ and Dreamfall were games that hit many of us at critical points in our lives, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who felt that the narratives of these games almost felt like they mirrored our own lives... We saw ourselves in these characters and grew up with these stories. I'd say that's pretty dang cool. I have fond memories of TLJ, as it came out around the time I was finishing High School and getting ready for college. My Dad also went through a divorce, and so I remember living with my Dad and playing TLJ in our small little apartment. TLJ definitely helped me through that period. And then oddly enough I actually stumbled upon Dreamfall by accident in the store, in those days I wasn't as hooked into the video game scene, and didn't really follow new releases much. However, when I made the connection that Dreamfall was attached to TLJ I remember kind of freaking out and being completely excited. Dreamfall is without a doubt one of my all time favorite games, and I can truthfully say that I've played Dreamfall beginning to end so many times, that I really am not even sure how many times I've played it over the years. But... A LOT ok. Hahha.. Dreamfall was incredible to me on so many levels. Because of the legacy of these games, I have to reluctantly admit that I was a bit underwhelmed by Dreamfall chapters. I think the problem was mostly me, in that I had those games on such a high pedestal, and my expectations were built up for the continuation of the story over so many years- that it would of been hard for even a AAA funded release to meet my expectations. So with understanding that, I had a hard time playing Dramfall chapters as it just seemed so far away from what Dreamfall was in terms of production values and quality - and UNDERSTANDBLY so - considering the huge differences in budgets... RTG did a commendable job with the money they had, but I ultimately stopped playing after book 2. I think for me at 36 now, it just took too long, and I don't want the epic impressions I had of the series to be downgraded in anyway.

damm, i started playing the game and it's on a terrible frame rate right from the start, seems like i won't be able to play it all, all the system requirements are optimal for my laptop besides the graphic card that meets the minimum (intel graphics 4000), does anyone have any idea what i can do? i used the tips from the faq and they did not help

It seems like the Linux build was updated today on Humble! (DreamfallChaptersLinux_July5.zip)

The Humble Bundle is still showing the update from March 3rd for me. Yes, it does say "soon" and not "now", but it's been a couple of weeks: could we get any kind of estimate? Or, failing that, could we get it through Good Old Games instead?

    9. Slingshot John on

I second that, where is the Linux Humble download?

Quite a shame that Linux users who claimed the game on HumbleStore still can't play the book.

I often go to YouTube when I want to check out game credits, there I can always pause and rewind. Proper playthroughs also contain the full credits. And here I've found one of Book 5: https://youtu.be/FRQt2Co8V4E…

@Martin O: "Broken Age had quite a lot entries in its credits and they implemented exactly that..."

Pillars of Eternity did too and that was the example I had in mind. Hopefully RTG address that along with other unfinished items (like being able to read books from the Enclave library). Indeed having something like TLJ's Book of Secrets (extras viewable once the game is finished like art, VO outtakes, unused music and the like) would be a great addon.

@Russell Deitch: Thanks for the info, though something more flexible than a 2x speedup is what I'm hoping for (Pillars allowed up to an 8x speedup if I recall correctly, along with reverse if you missed something).

As an aside, the changing picture in the credits showing various scenes from TLJ and Dreamfall was a nice touch. Maybe, just maybe, RTG might consider redoing these earlier games in Dreamfall Chapters?

    13. Julien Pirou on

I misread, it's actually "The Long Journey Home", not "The Longest". My bad.

    14. Julien Pirou on

Looks like someone else beat you to the title "The Longest Journey Home": http://store.steampowered.com/app/366910/

    15. Oliver Yeudall on

The last book was one of the best! A hell of a way to finish Dreamfall Chapters, that final scene left me a bit misty eyed. It truly has been a journey :)

    16. Fabian Utesch on

The final book is as stunningly beautiful as the previous ones. Thank you very much for this truly rare piece of art in form of a computer game. You are one of few studios who are innovative and able to deliver a roundabout amazing experience including story, character design, grafics, animation, sound and music, voice acting and animation. I would love to see more games from Red Thread in the future.

    17. Russell Deitch on

@AstralWanderer, your wish is already granted. Hold down the space bar during the credits to speed them up.

    18. Valeriy on

      @Seb:
Yep! It would appear Humble Store have gotten itself reduced to simple Steam-key re-seller service and nothing more. Steam sales every week but little to zero own bundles.
And no regional prising... just USD for the world which makes it even less viable then Steam itself in my country (even un-discounted Steam vs. HumbleBundle sale).
      What a pity...

Luckily I've got a copy of "Dreamfall Chapters" during GOG Summer Sale as a bonus.

@AstralWanderer: Broken Age had quite a lot entries in its credits and they implemented exactly that: You can fast-forward and fast-backward and you can open the credits from the menu.

Otherwise you have to wait until someone captures the credits and uploads the video.

Well, just finished book 5 and I'd agree that the ending is quite satisfying, wrapping up most of the loose ends (it would be nice to know what happened to April's friends - Emma, Charlie and Fiona plus the innkeeper Benrime, maybe in an update?).

However I found this to be the crashiest version so far, frequently exiting to desktop in Marcuria and giving unacceptably low (5-6 fps) framerates in a couple of indoor locations which shouldn't normally have caused trouble (the interior of the Journeyman Inn and the House of All Worlds). Although this was the 32-bit version, memory was not an issue (the error report indicated around 1,300MB free).

Finally, it might be a good idea to provide some ability to speed up/slow down/reverse scrolling (via arrow keys?) on that ultra-long credits list!

    22. kingcharlesxii on

Thank you so much for a wonderful story and a very satisfying final chapter. I don't have the words to say anything else right now but count me in for anything else in the series.

    23. Regy Rusty on

After holding off until the final episode was about to be released, over the past couple of weeks I finally replayed the first two games and worked my way through Chapters. It took a little bit too long to be able to finish the game on release day, but today I finally played through Chapter 5. Thank you so much for making this and seeing it through to the end. Finally I feel satisfied after cliffhanging since 2010! I thought it struck a nice balance between resolving everything and leaving a few mysteries unanswered.

Well done, and I'm very glad I backed this and helped it all happen.

@AstralWanderer: You are right, it's now updated but they didn't update the date.

@AstralWanderer: In the case of this summer sale you don't really pay for Dreamfall Chapters. But if you buy enough other games during summer sale (worth 25..30 EUR) you get it for "free".

    28. Missing avatar

      AstralWanderer on

      HumbleStore still hasn't updated...

@Martin O: "Or play the GOG version (you can easily get it now during GOG summer sale)..."

Hope you're not suggesting a backer here pay again for a copy when they can contain RTG for a key instead, see Update #67 https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/redthread/dreamfall-chapters-the-longest-journey/posts/1025847 for details, but this has to be done manually by RTG so will likely take a day or two.

Thank you so much for wrapping up this story! The Longest Journey holds a special place in my heart as it was originally released at a critical point in my life. I'm so glad that you were able to finally bring a close to a long and beautiful tale. I feel more complete.

    30. Julien Pirou on

      Just finished Book V.
I was a bit worried you wouldn't manage to tie up all the dangling plotlines, but it all worked nicely in the end. A couple of mysteries left unresolved, a couple of things rushed, but nothing too frustrating. And you even found room to answer some questions from the original TLJ :D
While Dreamfall Chapters was a bit weak on the gameplay side, as a story it was very satisfying. Great job everyone!
Now I still hope we'll get to undertake The Longest Journey Home, someday...

Played the end chapter, cried at Ingvild Hasund's Rush, loved the multiple endings. Adult Saga is awesome. The art, 3D models, music, voice work, script, everything are so top notch. And April !!

Thanks for the good game or mostly storytelling since gameplay was quite minimal with the latest episode. Overall as a series, a 3/5 stars experience for me; but would still play if you continue the saga or visit an earlier entry. Now I can finally mark this as received - the first project I backed on Kickstarter.

Just finished my longest journey! Congrats on an amazing piece of art and thank you for all the charcacters to fall in love with. Great storytelling, beautiful music etc.

It could have been a bit more game though, but in the ends ... who cares.
Anyway, you know I missed school for TLJ! 16 years later you still keep catching me with this universe, thank you for that!

      Great work, guys!
Question: Will the "complete edition", or whatever it's called, be playable without interruptions and multiple download/activate episode screens? I just finished playing Telltale's The Wolf Among Us and that game felt like playing 5 separate games, as each episode had to be downloaded and individually and i had to watch back to back "next time on..." and "previously on..." every single time, which was annoying.

    42. Joshua on

Brilliant! Haven't played any of it yet. Just re-installed The Longest Journey. I'll work my way through the whole story now that's it's complete! (or as complete as it will be for a while, at any rate)

Just finished the game, and I've got to say, the ending was fantastic - it's been such a long journey (both in terms of gameplay and actual years) between the longest journey and now, but throughout that time most of the main story has stuck with me so much that I haven't needed a refresher... I think that, in and of itself, is a testament to how great this story is.
