"Almost there!" May production update

Hi all,

We’ve reached the middle of May and the team is still hard at work on the final (!!!) episode of Dreamfall Chapters. Things Take Time, episodic is hard, etc. — yep, you’ve heard this before: we do want the conclusion to the saga to be a worthy one, and we’re not going to rush it out the door…even though our originally planned release window has come and almost gone.

A release date is not far off, however, and so here’s what the team is currently working on:

The location artists have wrapped up work on the new environments, and are now focusing almost entirely on special effects and cut-scene lighting. Some of the scenes in Book Five look absolutely gorgeous; a departure from anything in the previous four episodes, and some of the best work our artists have done so far. We look forward to sharing more of their work soon.

The character artists are done with all the major (and minor) characters, and are now focusing on the remaining backers — some Doppelgängers and all the Birthrighters — whose models are being put into the final episode (and also previous episodes).

On the writing and voice-over side, we still have four characters (and three actors) left to record. It’s been a challenge getting everyone’s schedules to match up, and this time we’ve also had some real difficulties booking all the actors and securing studio time (and casting one final key role) — but we should be wrapped by this coming Friday.

All the gameplay has been implemented, and the designers are completing the (many, many) cut-scenes for the series’ conclusion, along with testing and fixing bugs. They’re also making some big changes to Book One — improving the start of the game, and hopefully tightening the story and gameplay a bit. We’ve learned a LOT since 2014, and it was time to apply those lessons.

On the coding side, it’s mostly about fixing bugs and performing optimisations — there are no remaining features to be implemented, and the coders are spending most of their free time porting the game to new platforms, though there have also been some frustrating Unity issues to deal with.

New animations are still trickling in, but the animators are focusing mostly on iterating existing animations — making them smoother, better, more lifelike. With two animators and dozens upon dozens of cut-scenes, it’s amazing how they get it all done. But they do. Every single time.

Finally, on the audio side, our composer is working full time on getting a huge amount of original music done (some of the best we’ve heard so far in this game) and our talented sound designer is putting the final touches on the scenes and cinematic sequences — improving on the already great atmosphere in the new locations. We’re also hoping to have the full soundtrack ready for the release of Book Five, though it may take a few extra days to get it mastered and published.

We know a lot of you are getting increasingly impatient with the wait, and we completely understand and appreciate your frustration — but we believe that, in the end, it’s all about the quality of the game, and how the story was told…and how it ended. We hope and trust the wait will be worth it — but yeah, it has been a long, long, long wait. Luckily, Book Five is probably the team's best work so far, and, we think, a fitting end to this saga. We trust you’ll agree!

Finally, here’s a little bonus — a closer look at two of the character models in Book Five, created by our amazing 3D artist Hans Kristian Andersen:

We’ll definitely post more of these in the future.

The next update will most likely have a trailer AND a release date, more screenshots and information about still-to-come backer rewards. Until then, thanks again for your patience and support. It’s truly been the longest journey (!) but we’re approaching the end now — and we’re both very happy and very, very sad about that.

Thanks for reading!

@ Heinrich Jidlot i diss agree a sad ending can be a great one and i find they super happy everythings perfic endings tireing 90% of games end like that 90% of movies end like that 90% of books end like that i want stories that hae more complex endings that are both sad and happy both good and bad.

I could not agree more. Take any amount of time to get this right. I already said that there: in the forum years ago.
PLEASE don't fuck up the ending. My tormented soul needs conclusion.
The ending of TLJ left me a bit sad, mostly because the journey was over.
The ending of Dreamfall left me devastated.
The ending of Chapters needs to heal me.

Please do take the time to do things right and make Book 5 an appropriately awesome conclusion.

If you are going back and improving previous books, may I put in a request for book 4? This to me was the most disappointing release, in part due to the (unmet) expectation of being able to explore Riverwood (as per the video in update #6 ) and the major plot skips (Zoë's "teleportation" out of Marcuria and the very simplified conflict with what should have been the most dangerous opponent in the game to date - contrast that to dealing with Roper Klacks in TLJ).

Good to see updates. I've almost forgot about this. The Longest journey indeed

    5. Leônidas Soares Pereira on May 16, 2016

Awsome! Really looking forward to it!
*(just don't forget to make those extra haircut options for Zoe you promised)

Really appreciate the update, will the Loremaster stretch goal be included in Book Five?

    7. Christine - Dream Traveller on May 15, 2016

Great news and it is well worth the wait! I'm kinda glad you aren't releasing yet, I won't get to play until June, but I am looking forward to it and getting all the answers! You are going to give us all the answers aren't you? *glares intently at readthread*

@Aerothorn: I'm not sure what will be changed in existing episodes but you can just download the current version and archive it.
Also GOG Galaxy has a feature which allows rolling back to older versions of a game.

    9. NotDomo on May 15, 2016

Your character artist sure has a *fairy tale* feel about him. (Haha)

    10. MannyLaMancha on May 15, 2016

I don't mind waiting. Thanks for giving the game the attention that it deserves!

    11. Jose Lopez on May 15, 2016

Thanks and waiting patiently. Have plenty of games to keep me busy and I'm sure more to come. Don't think I will ever catch up which is good. :)

    12. Aerothorn on May 15, 2016

Thanks for the update, Red Thread!

Speaking as both someone who quite liked the first episode, and as a librarian: will the original version of Book One remain playable once the revised version is released? It would really be a shame if that was lost and people were not able to experience it as originally designed.

    13. Maxwell Horse on May 15, 2016

I'm sure this go-round with kickstarter, while successful, has probably made the Red Thread team kind of frazzled and stressed. So they might be shy about doing future kickstarters. (I think I even read Ragnar saying as such in a message thread at some point.)

Having said that, if the Red Thread guys ever want to do crowdfunding on The Longest Journey Home, you can count me in.

À bit over three years ago, you shared your dreams with the whole world. Thousands responded to your outcry. Your additional goals were ambitious and the last one finally could not be done. Still, amazement grew among the backers and through the ones that started everything.

Time has passed, emotions experienced, stories told and soon all will come to an end... Or will it? There is supposedly more to be explored and Ragnar certainly has many worlds in his mind just waiting to bloom. Or at least I am guessing that he does.

I hope that you have all kept your passions strong while working on this project and I hope to see many more from this wonderful independent company.

The last stretch for Dreamfall Chapters almost seems at hand!

May chocolate always shine brightly upon your paths! (I like chocolate... So yeah!)

@Rivercliff: I'm sorry to be the mouthpiece of negativity, but the signs I've seen thus far are pointing to another long wait. That's assuming the B5 ending won't end the entire series, since the devs' public statements over the past months, including this update, have been very ambiguous and can be interpreted as pointing towards this possibility.

On the bright side, you'll just have to stay healthy and drive safely for the next 15 years. ;-)

At this point, it really doesn't matter if it's a few extra weeks, even months. I could say I can't remember what happened in Book 1, but I actually can't remember what happened in Book 4. Episodic gaming really doesn't work with such long periods between episodes - especially with choices made back 1+ year ago which supposedly have consequences, and supposedly matter to the player.

Probably the best thing to do is review the episode summaries and forget the choices - with everything that's questionable in this project, I'm still very much looking forward to the conclusion of the saga, and credit where credit is due, the story has been amazing so far. But, guys, please no mountain-sized cliffhangers this time :)

    17. Rivercliff on May 15, 2016

Mikhail Aristov - You have given voice to my biggest fear (Well, my biggest gaming, anyways.) I began playing the TLJ saga over 15 years ago and I'm pretty sure I don't have another 15 years to complete it.

    18. Mikhail Aristov on May 15, 2016

@Maus, Rivercliff: I am pretty sure RTG will have their hands full with Draugen and Svalbard for the next couple years, so I wouldn't count on TLJH being released or even properly announced this decade. :-)

Les hope t is worth it, but I won't be pre purchasing or Backing any games from RTG in the future.

Just to echo what Maus has said, now that the end is in sight for DFC, will you give us the status of The Longest Journey Home? Is it still being planned, or will Book 5 of DFC be the final chapter of April's story? Even if you haven't made a final decision, yet, just give us your current thoughts.

No rush! Take as much time as you need to make it awesome. Unlike some other games I've backed, y'all have been great about keeping us updated and staying more or less on schedule, and I really appreciate that.

    24. Maus on May 15, 2016

Great news! So when can we expect the kickstarter for the conclusion to April's story? I'll be backing the hell out of that!!! :-)

    25. Barrie Cotton on May 15, 2016

Excellent news. Thank you. Please advise, as i have changed address etc.

    26. Red Thread Games Creator on May 15, 2016

@Barrie Cotton: When the whole game has been released, we'll start working on the physical edition. We plan to do some general updates and upgrades to the game before printing discs, but we'll send out an update and a plan after Book Five is out.

    27. Barrie Cotton on May 15, 2016

I funded a physical collectors edition of the game. I have not played any online editions.

What is the situation with these physical copies now, ive honestly lost the plot over 3/4 years and 90 plus updates!

Good thing that you take your time to finish the game, but also polish the earlier episodes for new players (there certainly were some frustrating gameplay issues there). It looks like my first ever backed Kickstarter project delivers this year and I can finally tick it as delivered.
