R+J: The Vineyard re-imagines the tale of star-crossed lovers through a unique perspective: using both deaf and English speaking performers, R+J offers an uncompromised theatrical experience for deaf and hearing audiences.
We're setting our production in late 19th century Martha's Vineyard, an era famous for its technological innovation yet marred by brutal ostracizing of the Deaf Community. We're co-producing this project with Oracle Productions in Lakeview, and using their cozy theater to provide an intimate connection between audience and performer. And in the spirit of Oracle's Public Access Theater model, R+J: The Vineyard is absolutely free to all audiences.
That's right, the show is free.
At Red Theater, we're committed to sharing this story with deaf individuals whose access to live art is too often compromised. Through synthesizing spoken and signed dialogue and developing a fully immersive visual world with innovative technology, R+J promises to be equally engaging for deaf and hearing audiences alike.
We can't wait to see you at the show.
Risks and challenges
R+J is our most ambitious project to date. Incorporating ASL (American Sign Language) seamlessly with spoken dialogue involves numerous interpreters and historians, and incredible dedication. Our design team is busy innovating existing strategies to better tell our story with less sonic and more visual language. And our actors are working tirelessly to develop a vocabulary of signs to immerse both deaf and hearing audience members in the world of our play. All this means our team is twice the size of one we'd need for a non-signed show, and our rehearsal process is twice the length as well.
If that sounds like a big commitment, it is. But it's important to us that we make R+J the most engaging possible production for our audiences. Occasionally, theaters offer interpreted- or captioned performances during their season, offering a fragmented experience for deaf audiences. In R+J, our actors are seamlessly signing and speaking with each other, so both deaf and hearing audience members can share the same experience together. For deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences, we're offering uncompromised access to Shakespeare's timeless story. For hearing audiences, this is an outstanding opportunity to explore the power of signing and the rich history of Deaf Culture.
