The LaGrange L1 is our Universal Motorized Skateboard Truck. Add it to ANY deck, wheels, etc to make the electric longboard YOU want.

As seen on:

Update:

Stretch Goal: $100,000 – 2nd Color Choice

That's right, for just $1 over our goal, we'll give every backer in the $300 (and higher) reward tiers a choice between 2 colors for their LaGrange L1.

Stretch Goal: $125,000 – 3rd Color Choice

You guessed it – every backer in the $300 (and higher) reward tiers will be able to get their LaGrange L1 made in one of 3 colors. Check it out below!

Help us reach the first two stretch goals and we'll 'unlock' a few more! Like:

Stretch Goal: $???,000 – Exclusive RRBS Remote

We'll work with our design team to create a dedicated wireless controller for all your electric skateboarding wants and needs – which we'll make available to every backer funding us at the $950 (and higher) reward tiers.

An electric longboard, just the way you want it!

Our LaGrange L1 is ready for production – on its own, as a kit, or part of a complete build. That means you can get a complete, ready-to-ride setup with your favorite manufacturer's skateboard parts...

OR use the existing components that you already own in combination with our LaGrange L1 Kit (which includes the LaGrange L1 truck, motor, battery, radio remote control, electronic speed controller, software and USB connector)...

OR, for a true do-it-yourself experience, get just the LaGrange L1 (our Universal Motorized Skateboard Truck) and we can help you out with suggestions on how to build it from there.

We made this with YOU – and real skaters like you – in mind. So, anything you want to customize – you can! Even the electronics are programmable.

The LaGrange L1 Kit will include:

  • The LaGrange L1 Universal Motorized Skateboard Truck
  • A single 3200 watt (4.3 hp) premium brushless outrunner motor
  • An adjustable Electronic Speed Controller (ESC - Mamba Monster by Castle Creations)
  • Robust hobby-grade wireless remote controller with signal lock (DX2E by Spektrum)
  • 10Ah rechargeable battery pack and charger
  • Optional color-matched front truck by Surf Rodz

Builder's Tip: When looking for design ideas and choosing your own skateboard parts, a good downhill skateboard setup usually makes for a great electric board.

The RedRock Boardshop complete will include:

  • Everything in the LaGrange L1 Kit, assembled with:
  • Surf Rodz Model RKP 10-mm precision front truck
  • Dregs 'Luv Yo Mutha' 76mm soy-compound wheels
  • RedRock Boardshop branded wood-grain deck

We have thoroughly and successfully tested this setup, reaching speeds of 20+ mph; supporting riders up to 200 pounds (90kg); achieving a range of 10-15 miles with each battery pack (1-3 hours estimated time for a full charge).

The LaGrange L1 Difference

Our motorized skate truck (patent pending) is a bolt-on solution to convert any skateboard into an electric vehicle. Our proprietary wheel hub easily converts any standard skateboard wheel into the drive wheel for use with the LaGrange L1. New and experienced skaters alike love the feel of non-stop cruising and going fast, while electronic motor braking takes the pain out of stopping. Plus, when your finger is off the throttle, your board can coast and ride like a traditional longboard.

Wait. There's no battery on that board!

For our completes and the intended kit configuration, the battery is separate from the board (carried in a backpack), which preserves the traditional skateboard weight and handling, and also allows for easy carrying and swapping of multiple batteries for extended travel range. The battery pack plugs into the board (don't worry, it's equipped with an emergency quick-disconnect power cable), and you control the speed and braking via wireless remote. With your own kit, or just the LaGrange L1 truck, you can, of course, put the battery wherever you like; even attached to the board.

Change Your World, Change Your Ride

Actually, we're not going to tell you what you already know about the advantages of convenience, cost savings, etc, etc, that an electric skateboard provides as a portable electric vehicle.

Instead, here's a sweet (but short) video of Biker Sherlock using our board. (Biker Sherlock is the founder, president and owner of Dregs Skateboard Company, as well as the most decorated downhill skateboard and street luge athlete in the history of the ESPN X-Games and NBC Gravity Games.)

What your pledges do for us (and for yourself)

Our LaGrange L1 has already been through all the necessary prototyping and beta-testing; it's ready to go to market, right now. All we need now is the means to create an initial inventory, so that we can get our L1 truck to the skateboard manufacturers you know and love, who can then provide it to the skate community as part of their complete product lines. That's where you (and Kickstarter) come in. By reaching our funding goal with your pledges, we can produce our initial inventory to fill orders from skate companies like Surf Rodz, Dregs, Arbor, Bustin Boards, Earth Boards, Landyachtz, Loaded, Sector 9, Uncommon Boards, etc (after getting the LaGrange to YOU first, of course) and then we're on our way to making fully customizable electric skateboards an industry norm.

Additionally, this campaign will enable us to create more extensive user support resources (online videos, forums, and phone support), as well as to develop efficient facilities for production and assembly – everything we need to get the LaGrange L1 into full-scale, sustained mass production.

Over the next 6 months, that process looks something like this:

  • Purchase materials and components (November 2012)
  • Set up our production / assembly facility (November 2012)
  • Establish support network and resources (Ongoing)
  • Build first production run (February 2013)
  • Adjust production processes and systems
  • Build second production run (March 2013)
  • Further refine the production process
  • Commence mass production (April 2013)

Who is RedRock Boardshop?

Aaron (pictured above) has been a skater and overall board sports enthusiast (whether wind, water, sleet, or snow) since 2002. He's also been a working engineer for 6 years, and runs his own personal machine shop out of his garage. Before that, he happened to earn a B.S. degree in Engineering from the University of Florida. He is considered the brains behind the operation.

Nic, on the other hand, is mostly here just to look pretty. That said, he has worked in fields including engineering, manufacturing, and process optimization. His academic background is in Accounting and Marketing, with scholarly pursuits spanning Kettering University, the University of South Florida, and Eastern Connecticut State University, which is an impressive list, as long as you don't ask questions about what he actually learned.

Nic and Aaron have been long-time friends. During their decade-and-a-half of friendship, the RedRock Boardshop co-founders have put motors and engines in and on a variety of vehicles (including – but not limited to – mini-bikes, go-carts, scooters, classic cars, dirt bikes, and four-wheelers). As kids, the two were notorious for taking over their parents’ garages. So now, naturally (since they have their own garages), they’re working on taking the skateboard industry by storm.

The rest of the RedRock Boardshop team declined to be interviewed, on the grounds that they might end up sounding much cooler than Nic or Aaron, but we can tell you that they help keep the wheels of progress turning in their own special ways.

We are stoked to be working with:

Note on Safety and Legal Issues: Like any other skateboard, you should always wear the proper safety equipment (helmets, pads, etc) and use common sense while riding. You are responsible for finding out which local and federal laws and regulations apply to the use of electric longboards / vehicles and skateboards for any / every location you intend to use your LaGrange L1 equipped electric skateboard. Altering motor settings can drastically change your skateboard’s performance and potentially result in unsafe ride characteristics. Ride at your own risk.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Product Risks & Challenges: Yeah, okay, we do see the irony of needing a 'kickstart' for a board you wouldn't actually have to push to get going; but in reality, that illustrates the challenge of changing the skate community's perspective on what electric skateboards are, and can be, in terms of transportation and recreation. Additionally, we realize it's a risk from the start when you create a high-liability product like an electric skateboard; luckily, we have plenty of legal resources at our disposal through the Florida Innovation Hub to help us cover that aspect. Another risk and challenge here, of course, is potential competition. Electric skateboards are not a new concept; however, what we're offering with the LaGrange L1 setup (and why we've got a patent pending on it) -is- something no one else is offering currently.

Production Risks & Challenges: We acknowledge that ramping up production will be a challenge, from dealing with multiple vendors to fulfilling orders from across the globe, from potentially getting 'too much' demand to not getting enough from early adopters like our Kickstarter backers. We've already addressed much of this through discussions with manufacturers and component suppliers, so we already know some things we can expect from the process and how to overcome any issues that arise, and that's how we made our timetables. They -are- still only estimates, but we're going to be upfront and transparent about how things are progressing, by blogging, and tweeting, and facebooking about it. We've also attended industry trade shows to gauge reaction to our product, to guide us as we achieve production on a larger scale. As well, since RedRock Boardshop is a small company at this point, we can easily make decisions (i.e., moving to a larger facility, etc) with no corporate hoops to jump through. Plus, we're based out of a college town, so as soon as it's necessary to bring in additional help, we'll have no shortage of educated and eager students at our disposal.

Financial Risks & Challenges: We're not going to lie, it's harder to get things going with limited cashflow. That's the point of this project – it funds the actual production of our initial inventory, the sales of which fund the production of subsequent inventory, the sales of -those- fund the production of -more- inventory, and so on. We already have the financial software and enterprise resource management systems in place (thanks to Nic's background in accounting), so when we do get fully funded by our Kickstarter backers, we know exactly how that money translates into the production of our rewards. While this project is specifically to bring our initial inventory into existence, the effects of that inventory will propel our business forward.

Personal/Personnel Risks & Challenges: Right now, we have a small (although very dedicated) team doing everything that has to be done. So, there's always the real risk of burning ourselves out. We're all real people, we still have bills to pay, some of us have spouses to please, and we all have friends that we're alienating with our constant skateboard talk. But we knew going into this that we had to create a work-life balance, and we went into business with people we have known and trusted for a long time. We know what we each can and can't do, and we're honest about needing and giving support to one another. At the moment, we're not even all in the same state (or country, for that matter), but we've got content management software for document sharing and so we all have access to all the RedRock Boardshop resources at any time. We're always available to each other by phone, email, video chat, etc and, because we are in different places, we can achieve 24-hour coverage in overseeing what the business needs. A lot of this is a first for us, but we're completely confident in succeeding because, together, we have the skills to do it and the personal and professional connections to help when we need them.
