Update

Tiles are sorted and Backer Rewards are starting to be boxed.  A few local Backers have stopped by to pick up their rewards.  As packages are shipped, you will be notified via Fundafull or email if you did not use Fundafull.  All packages are scheduled to be mailed out by the middle of September.  If you have not received an email notifying you that your rewards have shipped, that is the time to contact me.

A Little Bad News

Due to the increase in the thickness of the tiles, my original packaging of the repurposed VHS case is not going to work.  With the thickness of the tiles and the bonus tiles and decor, it takes three VHS Cases to hold all of the contents of a Basic Set.  The prototype tiles I made myself were considerably thinner and an entire set would fit.  I do not feel that the VHS case holds enough tiles to make sense as a way to store the tiles.

I hated to give up on the VHS case as I always try to have things be multifunctional but this was just not working.  I hate to dissapoint anyone and hope that the trade off of thicker and more durable tile salves any hurt feelings.

I do not want to totally leave anyone in the lurch so here are some ideas.  We are getting our kids ready for school and you can get an Elementary School Pencil box for only a few dollars.  In fact, I was one last night at a corner drugstore for less than $1.  Pencil boxes are typically between 2" and 3" deep and about 5"x8" so will easily hold a Basic Set along with dice and some markers.

One Backer, Julien B. picked up a hard pencil box for his tiles and sent me this picture today. This Vaultz brand pencil case can be purchased at WalMart and Amazon for about $10.  I have seen similar one of other brands for around $5.

At CVS, a US drugstore chain, I came across this Caliber Expanding File with 13 compartments.  Similar ones by C-Line can also be found at office supply stores and Amazon for around $5.

Lastly, I bought a 4 pack of these FileExec 4x6 Index Cases to sort sample tiles I am bringing to GenCon.  They can be found on Amazon in a 2 pack for under $5 or this 4 pack with varied colors for $12.  Here is a search link.  Each case can hold around 50 tiles.

GenCon

Following are some of the demo samples I am assembling to take to GenCon.  I have used drafting dots to make them hinge (hence the wider crack between the tiles) and allows me to make a small encounter that folds up for easy transport.  I have used sticy tack to place cut outs of the various decor items and they are staying in place well despite being folded and moved around for over a week.

Finally, I will be at GenCon next week giving out swag and samples.  If any of you are there, be sure to contact me so we can connect.  I can be reached through Kickstarter if nothing else and then I will make an email connection with you so we can meet.  I will be wearing the Blue Dungeon Tiles Shirt.  (I bought myself extras so I will not be wearing the same one every day and stink).  I should be the only one that has one of these at this point so do not be afraid to approach me.

(also, I'm probably going to figure out how to use these tiles with sheet magnets, which are going to be a LOT thicker ... so, I'm going to be dealing with worse thickness-of-tiles problems than whatever issue you've got :-) )

Sorry it has taken me two weeks to reply to this... but:

      a) I didn't do this project for the case. I did this project for the tiles. So, my primary feel for this is: do what makes sense to you, economically. I'm ok with a VHS case that doesn't fit everything, a cheap pencil case, whatever. I'm even ok with you coming up with some other bonus to give instead of a case (a few completely blank tiles?)

      b) I don't care if it's more than one VHS case to hold a set, the VHS case is kinda cool. Please let me know where you were planning to get the VHS cases from, so I can buy some on my own.

      c) whatever case cover insert you were going to use for the VHS cases, please make a PDF of that available, with a blank area for me to write in "Basic Set 1 of N" and things like that (on the front, and on the spine). Because, realistically, regardless of what you send me for (a) above, I'm going to get some blank VHS cases to hold my blue dungeon tiles. Even if it's 3 cases for 1 basic set (and I got enough stuff that I'll probably need a dozen cases anyway).

Ahhh, no big deal about the Basic set, but it would have been nice to have the VHS for the expansions if they fit in, especially for things like the boat & room sets. Main use I saw for them (besides storing unused sets) was to have the nicely drawn up specialty rooms in a run already done and in an opaque hard case apart from the more generic tiles.

I'll have to figure it out when I see them, but a card organizer (or three) would probably do the trick. One of my Plano4 gun cases was good for holding the VHS cases two wide, it will probably work for the bulk tile storage also.

I returned most of the VHS cases for a refund from the supplier. Expansion sets can fit in a single case so I held onto a small amount. I like them so much and wanted to figure out something to do with them in the future.
Alan, you can get drafting dots from art & craft supply stores, office supply stores and also order them from Amazon. Be sure to subscribe to my blog site redkobold.com where I will start adding posts and pages on how to use, organize, modify, etc. Blue Dungeon Tiles.

      two things,
      1) Can I have the VHS Cases anyway
      2) Where do I get that T-Shirt?

      VHS cases... no loss there.

I used to keep all of my tapes in those cases. If you ever dropped one, you had to make a critical saving throw to be lucky enough that they didn't break/crack after hitting the floor.

I was going to use something different for the Tiles anyway (and something that will hold all of them).

Hah, sorry about the box situation, but I'm actually pretty excited. I love that the tiles are even thicker than before, it sounds like they will tile better!

    8. Jason Hunt on

If possible, I'd still like to get one of the VHS cases with my pledge...Even if it won't hold everything, It'd still be a super handy way of toting around a handful for a single session or something.

So, yeah, what ARE you going to do with the hundreds/thousands of VHS cases? Surely you're not gonna keep them around the house, are you? They might make interesting shelving supports, but I can't see them being much use otherwise. I'm all for including them with the shipped tiles, just to get rid of them and so that those backers who DO want to use them, can.

P.S. Where do you get drafting dots? I'm looking at what you've done there and it would be freaking AWESOME to have an entire dungeon all planned and laid out and folded up and then *fliup* there's the table all covered with the night's activities!

    10. Ean Moody on

Is there any chance you might just include a VHS case in each set, even though it won't be enough to hold the whole thing? They'd make a really handy carrying case for a game's worth of tiles, and I was really looking forward to having one to carry my game's stuff around in.

Thanks for the update, Kevin! I'm sorry to hear that the VHS case idea didn't pan out, it sounded like a great way to get some bargain-priced packaging.

I wouldn't have used the VHS case anyway, so no worries there. I love the look the Vaultz storage boxes - they come in a variety of sizes and are cheap enough (for me) to experiment and figure out what works best for my sets.

Like the others, though, I am concerned about how they will be shipping... but not that concerned. You have run a fabulous KS project so far, I have no qualms about your ability to make the right choice in packaging/shipping methods.

      Brian Diggs on

I, too, am not going to miss the VHS boxes. With all the expansions I got, it would likely have been an unwieldy number of boxes anyway. I was looking toward a 4x6 photo storage box which would (most likely) give me enough depth to store them all together. So for me, at least, the VHS cases would have gone unused.
My only concern, as others have voiced, is that packaging for shipping be adequate to keep the tiles undamaged. I am confident that there won't be any problems in that regard.

      Glenn McMath on

Shame about the VHS cases no longer working, but having thicker more durable cards is a worthwhile trade-off in my opinion.
I am a bit confused about what will be shipping with my order, though. Will the VHS cases still be shipped with our order, or are you looking for a replacement, or will it be up to us to find a replacement ourselves? I don't really have a problem with any of those options, but if the cards are shipping without storage cases I am a bit concerned that they could be damaged in transit (especially the corners).

    15. Jonathan Boisvert on

So no vhs cases, the tikes will arrive in something like shrink wrap and cardboard box?

What will you do with the hundreds of vhs cases? Do individual expansions packs still fit inside?

    16. bygrinstow on

Have you tried this: Take two VHS boxes, opened out. Face them toward each other, with one rotated 180 degrees. Snap them together. ...this should make more than twice as much room as a single case. I think it leaves a small square open on the top and bottom edges, but the tiles are bigger than the gap.
